Here's a better look of the doll sets in question.

The thing is they did these doll collections with Anna and Elsa too but later backtracked from including them in the line-up. Hopefully, they won't do the same with Moana. Until they give her a coronation ceremony and include her in the Disney Princess website, she won't be an "official" part of the brand.
disneyprincess11 wrote:Does anyone think Vanellope has a stronger chance to be in the lineup? I mean, Vanellope has the princess status in both movies.
Vanellope declaring herself a princess and identifying as such in the sequel never made sense to me. Vanellope was very anti-royalty in the original to the point she immediately abdicated her throne as soon as she found out she was a princess and became the interim president. In the sequel, she starts calling herself a princess without any explanation. Then again, this isn't the only instance she behaves out-of-character in the sequel.
disneyprincess11 wrote:Vanellope has everything checked in the princess checklist, minus the animal sidekick.
Ralph is the animal sidekick. :-P There isn't really a checklist. Disney does what it wants, requirements and "rules" be damned. I doubt Vanellope will ever be inducted into the official line-up, but I suppose weirder things have happened. Personally, I don't want her to be a part of the DP brand. She doesn't fit in, in my opinion. She's a child with a heavily caricatured design whereas the rest of them are either teenagers or young adults with a more naturalistic, traditional Disney-esque look. Honestly, I'd be more open to Tamora or Shank joining the franchise than Vanellope.

Thanks for letting us know! Well, that settles it. She's joining the line-up. I hope she gets a coronation ceremony and not just be added quietly without any fanfare.

Note how bendable Moana is. Most likely due to how she's an action heroine rather than supposedly a Princess, as she was marketed as :P

So, does anyone know if the pictures of Moana are included on the back of these doll sets? Perhaps we will finally see some official 2D pictures of her?

Is that Moana in Disney Princess style? I've never seen a picture of her with that shading before. To be honest, it looks a little like a fan-art.

What I find most interesting in all those doll sets is how Moana has taken Merida's place. Merida was included in both of those sets in prior years but it looks like she's been phased out.

I believe it is. Thanks for posting. I've encountered the same pose of Moana in CG clip-art and in storybooks but not with that particular kind of shading. They've also tweaked her design a little to make her look more 2D and in line with other clip-art.

Here's a larger version of the Moana clip-art.

In Merida's case, I'm pretty sure it's not the first time one of the princesses was phased out of sets like those? I'm not worried about future of any of the princesses in the line-up. Especially after Wreck it Ralph 2, I feel like all of them have a "safe" spot in the franchise. I'm glad, because like I said before, I both like Merida and find her design one of the most interesting ones, and I'm pretty sure without the Princess status she would be quickly forgotten. But anyway, I was surprised to see she is one of the least liked. Before I started reading about princesses, I always thought she was one of the most popular! She's like in almost every Disney Princess book, each issue of magazine, and whenever I watch videos or photos from Disney parks, there are always little girls in Merida's costume.

I like her myself I'll be sad if she gets phased out.

The Disney Store set always features the full 11 princess lineup while the JC Penney's set is always the same minus Pocahontas and Mulan. Merida has been included in these sets and all their variations since she was added to the franchise until now where Moana has inexplicably taken her place.

I like Merida, too. I feel people go out of their way to dislike her, yet at the same time her critics are also Ariel and Jasmine fans, which is kinda hypocritical considering the three of them have similar "flaws".

I do like Merida okay. She's not my favorite. I admire how she tries to take hold of her destiny and she stands out against her family. But, I do think she's a little too bratty at times.

I think they will quietly add Moana in. Seeing that it has been two years, a coronation would be too late, especially if they want to focus on Vanellope if she joins. The website hasn't been updated in a while and oddly has no mention of the Wrecked Princesses on the site. So, whenever they update the site b/c of the movie, they'll add Moana in.

EDIT:

Funny thing. I was watching the #DreamBigPrincess video campaign. Not only are Moana and the Frozen girls there, but also Ralph and Vanellope. Could this be foreshadowing for Vanellope?

These were posted on the official Instagram and Facebook accounts for the Disney Princess brand. It's ironic they're flat-out calling her a princess when she literally said she's not one in her movie. Since Moana joining the DP line had always been a possibility, shouldn't have the Consumer Products division consulted with WDAS and had them remove or change that line when the film was still in progress?

I always thought that was Musker and Clements' way of saying "who are you kidding?! You are a princess", and not a "she's not like other princesses" statement.

I always thought that was Lasseter's way of putting down the other princesses. Pixar did the same thing with Merida. I never liked that scene in Moana. Escpeally, the part where Maui says "if you wear a dress and have an animal sidecick, you're a princess". That was too meta and never made sense to me. Maui is not like the Genie who can travel through time and space so anachronistic references like this one and the twitter joke didn't fit.

Funny and contradicting that they're doing so, due to the Princesses being the bread and butter of the Company, even more now than ever. At least Brave was a deliberate intention of dismissing the Princess trope, yet it never felt as invigorating as it should've been.

Me neither. It would've made sense if it was something that was a spoof of a fairy tale or if Moana actually was a Princess. It was too contrived and shoehorned in.

It sounds like Vanellope is being considered (keyword: considered) to join the lineup!
While it’s discovered at the end of Wreck-It Ralph that Vanellope is actually the princess of her game Sugar Rush, she was never pitched to be in the running as an official Disney princess until she met all the other ones and saw everything she had in common with them, including people mistakenly thinking her problems are always solved by a big, strong man.

We reached out to Disney for comment on whether Vanellope is considered to be an official princess, but Johnston said if he had any say in the matter — which he doesn’t — he believes she is absolutely a Disney princess, and 100% backs Silverman’s claim, which she has stated in multiple interviews while promoting the movie, that Vanellope is the first Jewish Disney princess.

It’s a sentiment MacDougall agrees with, adding that with the original song “A Place Called Slaughter Race,” hopefully Vanellope is “an Academy Award–winning princess at that.”
