I know! That's what we've been saying since day one.
JeanGreyForever wrote:And I disagree that race wasn't a factor here, because the complaint was that Tiana had been whitewashed. Not just skin tone wise, but as Anika said, her features had been changed completely.
I didn't say race wasn't a factor, I said the change wasn't racially motivated. This was the result of the god-awful redesign. In their attempt to make the princesses more caricatured and cutesy with a unified look, they inadvertedly engaged in whitewashing. They made a style mould and tried to apply it to all of them indiscriminately. They absurdly thought that assimilating them and taking away their unique look was a good idea, completely oblivious to the racial implications this would have on the princesses of color. Pocahontas also had her features altered and so did Jasmine. Jasmine's features in particular were altered so radically, she reads as Indian instead of Arabic now.

When you said change, I assumed you meant the changes made just to Tiana's look to make her look more accurate. I didn't realize you meant the changes to transition all the princesses from 2D to 3D. I agree with you on that that these changes were not racially motivated.

You beat me to it  With the debut of new Tiana too. So glad we have more stuff with their comfy close, but what was the point of no Aurora, Pocahontas, and Snow?

My first thought with her in the second trailer! My church has lots of Indian folks, so I recognized the Indian cheekbones. She looks beautiful though. At least they tried to make her Middle Eastern.

If she looks Indian though how does it follow that they tried to make her look Middle Eastern?

That's the third poster where the princesses are featured prominently. Ralph and Vanellope have become guest stars in their own movie.

Are we sure that's her updated look? She looks the same from the trailers to me.

That's indeed weird. The other two posters had all of them.

To me, Ralph and Vanellope are in the front and the princesses are the back.

Also, it's weird that Yesss and KnowsMore are in the poster, but no Shank. It's hard to tell who's the bigger character.
Sotiris wrote:Are we sure that's her updated look? She looks the same from the trailers to me.
Yup, her hair is darker and much much bigger. Look at the original and compare it.

It's Hollywood, which white men rule. Of course they're misguided in designs for POC

She especially look Indian in the new poster. Her chin and her smile are very tiny, compared to the original design.

To be honest, the recent poster is my favorite one of those who features the Princesses. Mostly due to their angle, especially how Jasmine looks directly at the audience with a smile.

I hadn't heard that about Anika Noni Rose's own part in Tiana's design and portrayal (not referring to the ugly Wrecked Princess designs I don't care about, but the original The Princess and the Frog). She's such a lovely woman. I love JHUD and like Beyonce, but I'm still grateful to this day that Rose beat them out for the role.

Lol.

She definitely has an Indian touch to her now. It doesn't look anything like Jasmine, but that's true for all the princesses.

I always saw a strong resemblance between Anika and Tiana so I figured that Tiana was based off of her, but I didn't realize either that Anika got the chance to voice her own input on the character's design.

I'm really glad that Anika got the role too. I find Beyonce overrated and while I do love Jennifer Hudson, I'm glad that Anika, a more unknown celebrity compared to the former two, snagged the part. Beyonce demanding the role be given to her wasn't something I appreciated anyway. I would love to see Jennifer in a Disney role sometime in the future though.

This doesn't apply in this case because the artist who redesigned them is Ami Thompson, an Asian woman of Japanese descent. What's the excuse now?

I also noticed the similarities but thought it was just the animators incorporating facial features and mannerisms of the voice actor like they always do. I'm glad Anika got a say in Tiana's design. She looks great in TPatF. We're lucky she got to voice Tiana; Anika has such an elegance, warmth, and generosity of spirit that's hard to find. Her performance really elevated Tiana's character. I, too, hope we get to see her in more Disney projects.

Oh, I definitively agree! I thought she looked Indian in the first photo that was revealed, but she certainly looks Indian in the new poster!

Really? I've always thought that Tiana looked like a African-American version of Belle, with a little touch of Mulan (especially when she meets Prince Naveen at the ball). I know that I'm not the only one who's said that (though some people have cringed when I've said it). But the Ariel comparison is after all fair, since Mark Hehn is behind her as well.

I actually happen to love Beyonce, regardless of the demanding rumors, because I love her music, singing voice and do find her a genuine and warm person nonetheless. But I don't mind that Anika got the part.
Sotiris wrote: Anika has such an elegance, warmth, and generosity of spirit that's hard to find.
Yeah, I agree that her warmth was probably her biggest strength, because she seems like a warm person and has a warm, soft and tender voice.

For all of its faults, TPATF did a great job with casting voices for all of the characters. I was especially happy that Jennifer Cody, voice actress for Charlotte, won an Annie Award for her performance.

Where did you get Ariel from? I think you mistook my saying that Tiana resembles Anika, her voice actress, for Ariel. I definitely see the Belle resemblance to Tiana though since Mark Henn is responsible for designing both Tiana and Belle. Glen Keane designed Ariel though.

I don't really follow Beyonce much although I've heard the rumors about her, but that's true for several celebrities, JLo for example. I just find her general music overrated as well. I much prefer Rihanna when it comes to the two of them.

Did I?? Oh, I'm so sorry, I misread it.

OK. I prefer Beyonce, though I do like Rihanna's music (just not her). I know there's many rumors about J.Lo, but there are couple of times where I consider J.Lo to be genuinely likable.

That's all right. It's easy to see Anika and read it as Ariel since I imagine Ariel's name pops up more here than Anika's.

I'm actually surprised we haven't seen JLo do anything for Disney besides that Disney Dreams portrait where she's portraying Jasmine. Rihanna has been doing more movies lately, not to mention voicework for animated characters, so I wouldn't be surprised if she one day ended up doing something for Disney. Personally, while I love Rihanna, and even like her acting in the movies and TV shows I've seen her in, I don't think she's really a fit for Disney. I suppose it depends on the role though. For a more contemporary-oriented film like Wreck-It Ralph, I could see her as a character, unlike something period.

Agreed. J.Lo has been around so long that it's somewhat strange that she haven't done anything Disney at all. Though Rihanna perhaps may not be as anti-Disney as they come, I just can't see her doing something Disney.

Perhaps JLo's less than stellar reputation precedes itself, making Disney not want to work with her.
The closest Rihanna has come to working with Disney is her song "Shut Up and Drive" being used in Wreck-It Ralph lol and people complained how inappropriate that was.

Their website has a bunch of items:
https://www.shopdisney.com/search?query=ralph

Target doesn't have much, but they have books, and a soundtrack release date (November 15): https://www.target.com/s?searchTerm=ral ... e+internet
