What is Disney's best DVD?

Post by Ciaobelli »

Out of all the PEs, LEs, GCs, MEs, SEs and all that, which one do you think is the best?

Ultimate Toy box and Fantasia Anthology don't count.

I think the best so far is The Emperors New Groove CE
Good commentary, a very long and detailed Making Of documentary, actually two of them, plus more. Thats how its done.

I wish Tarzan CE had been done like that, I don't like short featurettes like in TLK.

I meant movies, not editions. I meant you could choose from dvds in those categories, sorry for my crappy wording, english isn't my native language.

We recently conducted polls on this topic, and the winner was Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs: Platinum Edition, which I agree with. Here's how I rank Disney's 2-disc sets (Classics and Pixar):

1. Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs: Platinum Edition
2. Monsters, Inc: Collector's Edition
3. Atlantis: The Lost Empire: Collector's Edition
4. Beauty and the Beast: Platinum Edition
5. Sleeping Beauty: Special Edition
6. The Emperor's New Groove: Collector's Edition
7. Tarzan: Collector's Edition
8. A Bug's Life: Collector's Edition
9. The Lion King: Platinum Edition
10. Alice in Wonderland: Masterpiece Edition
11. Finding Nemo: Collector's Edition
12. Brother Bear: Special Edition

Snow White is a really good set. Beauty and the Beast and The Lion King were lacking. They were good DVDs, but they could have been much better (especially Lion King), in terms of including content that exists, and concerning less with promotion and more with substance. Dealing with two films, Fantasia Anthology is as good as Snow White, or better.

Pixar's multi-disc sets have all been great, and those would probably earn the highest marks. Flawless video and audio, and genuinely entertaining and enlightening bonus features. Monsters delivered the most extras for a single movie, and The Ultimate Toy Box is quite remarkable, too.

The two-disc Collector's Editions like Atlantis, The Emperor's New Groove, etc., are all also very enjoyable, though when it comes to extras, they don't have the flair of Pixar's DVDs or the history of early Disney films. Brother Bear was a very good set, and as of now, it's maybe Disney's best DVD of the year.

Perhaps my favorite line is the now extinct Vault Disney. There was a uniformity to them, but each had its own style, and maybe the fact that I was unacquainted with these films (all of which I enjoyed) made the comprehensive 2-disc sets even easier to embrace, as it was all new material to me.

Sleeping Beauty and Alice in Wonderland aren't too far from the Platinum line, other than the fact that there isn't as much fluff and the menus are easier to navigate. I do need to go through the bonus material again on these two before passing a proper judgment, but everything I saw seemed first-class.

If I had to pick one single best Disney DVD, The Ultimate Toy Box would probably get it, but dealing with just a single movie, Monsters, Inc. is probably the best one. Dealing just with individual movies that were actually made by Disney, then I'd go with either The Parent Trap or Snow White.

Snow White, Emperor's New Groove, Atlantis, were all superior dvd's. Beauty and the Beast, Lion King, Sleeping Beauty, Alice in Wonderland, Nemo, A Bug's Life, Monster's Inc. and Peter Pan are all solid dvd's. Of course the Fantasia Anthology and Ultimate Toy Box are among the best ever. Don't forget three stellar live action titles. Tron, Swiss Family Robinson and I think Disney's most overlooked disc 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea.
