Mulan on Broadway?

Post by Sotiris »

Yes, please! :D
As far as the stage goes, Mulan Jr. is available for schools and community theaters to perform, but would they want to take the show to Broadway? “In a heartbeat ,” responds Zippel before Wilder mysteriously adds, “There’s something being chit-chatted in backrooms right now that we’re not at liberty to talk about. We have a deep, deep, deep passion for this piece. [We would love] to have the opportunity to expand the score and see it up on stage. That would be a dream.”

Could Matthew Wilder be referring to Mulan? That would be awesome!
His list of upcoming projects is just as eclectic as his existing resumé: scoring an political animated film about North Korea by Japanese director Eiji Han Shimizu, mentoring a young singer/songwriter, OSKAR O., and writing songs for an “imminent” Broadway musical that he’s “not at liberty to talk about.”

Yes, I'd love that. But considering Disney decided the music wasn't good enough to include in the re-make, to then use it as a basis for a Broadway show would be really bizarre. Disney never does make any sense though, do they?

I assume no more news about this has come out. The last news was 2020, before the remake was released a few months later (it had a Fall release, right?). I wouldn't be surprised that if there had been any plans for this, that they were cancelled after the live-action film flopped. This is why I rake the remakes that change everything over the coals; when they flop, the original film's treatment by the company is affected even though the remake was nothing like them for the two to be comparable. The remake flopped because of the remake's choices to cut Mushu, Shang, Shan-Yu, the music and give Mulan superpowers and a witch villain were f-ing stupid, not because there's anything wrong with the original property. The same will be true if/when The Little Mermaid and Snow White remakes flop for the same reasons.
