Princess Stories

Post by wtdanceisthrough »

Does anyone know anything about the DVD series "Princess Stories"? Seems it has some Jasmine and Ariel shorts, which no doubt come from their respective TV shows, but also features shorts from Belle, Cinderella and Snow White. Is this genuinely new content for the DVDs?

Amazon UK URL for Princess Stories:
https://www.amazon.co.uk/Disney-Princes ... 0012RA992/

Wikipedia has this to say on the subject:
The Disney Princesses' television appearances were compiled into the Disney Princess Collection, a series of compilation DVDs containing episodes from Aladdin, The Little Mermaid and two Beauty and the Beast specials. A later DVD series was released, entitled Disney Princess Stories, featuring content similar to the previous release.
I had a look at the Disney Princess Collection and I can't find any DVDs for that, only VHS. And the titles from Beauty and the Beast seem to be the live-action episodes from Sing Me A Story With Belle. Example here: https://images-na.ssl-images-amazon.com ... SY445_.jpg

I suppose it's possible that the Princess Stories episodes with Belle are also from the same show, although there is no reference to being any live-action content on any of the DVD information or marketing.

For the individual Princess Stories volumes, here are the claims made by the DVD back cover:
  • Volume 1: "...two all-new stories featuring Belle and Cinderella". Of course, the Belle one could possibly be from the live-action show, but Cinderella I'm not sure. Possibly a segment from the package film Cinderella II: Dreams Come True? Or are they actually all-new as per the claim?
  • Volume 2: "Watch Snow White try her best to fix a yummy dinner for her beloved Dwarfs - with hilarious help from Dopey". I have no idea where this referenced Snow White short could be coming from. I could not find any information about this online.
  • Volume 3: "Watch as Cinderella tells, in her own words, the remarkable story of how she first became a princess". I am not sure where this segment would come from either.
Usually, for new content, Disney Wiki or similar sites will have details and maybe a plot synopsis but there is absolutely nothing, which makes me feel that perhaps these are not new pieces of content but are recycled from somewhere else - I just can't work out where?

There are reviews of each DVD here with their full content.

The Little Mermaid and Aladdin segments are always from their respective shows as you guessed. The Cinderella and Beauty and the Beast segments are usually power point presentation type shows with voice dialogue and re-used animation from their direct-to-video sequels. The Cinderella segment in the third DVD though is just an abridged version of the film. The Snow White segment is basically the same with primarily re-used animation.

Thanks so much! That sounds terrible! I'm shocked that Disney could produce something of such low quality. I'm glad I wasn't duped into buying this DVD set, as I almost bought it.

The shock will fade with time. You'll get accustomed to it to the point that you'll get shocked if Disney doesn't produce something like this. The Disney Princess DVDs in particular were cash-grabs and they clearly worked, since I used to own some as well (not the Princess Stories DVDs though).

Yeah, they definitely do work. I know I bought a Sing-a-Long DVD years back when I was in high school or middle school. I can't remember why, but I believe the reason was that The Little Mermaid hadn't been put on DVD by that point (in a form I could get or watch, anyway) and I wanted to see the "Part of That World" scene on DVD. Too, I believe I was bewitched by that "If You Can Dream" song (  ); they aired the "music video" a couple of times on Disney Channel back when I still watched it. Even now, I strangely like the song even though I know (objectively) it's not very good. I liked all the various princess voices coming together in one song.

Aside from that, the only reason I've thought about picking up these various DVDs is for the couple episodes of the Aladdin and Mermaid (sometimes Hercules, I think, too?) TV series since they don't get aired anymore. I do the same thing with Winnie the Pooh DVDs that come with a couple eps of the The New Adventures of WtP series.
