Superbowl Trailers from Disney?

Post by justcuttinhair »

Any word on what films Disney is doing a Superbowl commercials for? I'm expecting something from "Black Panther" and/or "The Avengers-Infinity Wars"..hoping for The Incredibles-2" and "Ant-Man and the Wasp......maybe "Wrinkle In Time"?...definitely don't see "The Nutcracker"( I am not liking this at all from what I have seen) being shown during Superbowl....what do you guys/gals think?

I know it's been predicted that Solo will premiere its first trailer.

Finally, the only trailers released by Disney were an Avengers: Infinity War TV spot and a preview of today's Solo: A Star Wars Story teaser trailer.

The Solo trailer was decent. I liked the shot with the Imperial Star Destroyer in the fog though. That was impressive.

Yes, I much prefer the old Star Destroyers over the FA\LJ versions. Call me a purist I suppose. I'm really not sure about Woody Harrelson though. Seems like a stretch for the genre but given how much I liked R1 I'm willing to give this a shot.

First Post! Hi Y'All!
Welcome. It's nice to see a familiar face here. Are you also one of The Last Jedi haters or do you just prefer the Original Trilogy aesthetics?

I don't really have an issue with Woody Harrelson, but maybe I'll feel differently after seeing him in more material. I didn't think Benicio Del Toro was a good fit for The Last Jedi though, so maybe I'll feel the same here as well.

Hi Back JGF! I'm not a LJ hater. I've seen it twice, and it took me the second time to really enjoy it. It's a fun, uplifting story and a good end for old man you know who... I'm not sure how spoiler friendly we are here. Maybe someone can clue me in on that?

If I have any resonance with the haters it that basically all the men in the movie are cowards, deserters, backstabbing SOB's and so on while the women of the film are morally upright and steadfast. I'm not losing any sleep over it to be clear but I can spot a pattern when one slaps me across the face.

For the most part, spoiler tags are used for the recent films, but to be honest, most people here don't watch or care for Star Wars. There's a thread that ranked all of 2017's Disney films, and about half mentioned never having seen The Last Jedi. So you can probably get away with discussing Star Wars spoilers, especially since I think most of the internet has gotten past spoiler tags for this film.

I don't really see a pattern for the male characters myself. Finn was a deserter/coward in the first film as well, and the point of this one was for him to develop, hence his Rebel Scum line at the end as well as his near sacrifice. Poe does what he thinks is best, and I was on his side until I learned that Huldo had a plan. Yes, he's brash, and perhaps more people died unnecessarily because of him, but I actually thought it was refreshing for a Star Wars film to address that sometimes the reckless heroics aren't a good thing. Most films (Star Wars and non-Star Wars) make it seem like it all works out in the end, but this one was refreshingly honest with how Poe's actions had an actual cost and could have been in vain. Kylo Ren I think is better appreciated by the current generation of Millennials and Tumblr fangirls, if we're being honest. You know I love a good love story, so I'm quite generous towards Kylo myself although I'm not besotted by him the way most others are it seems. I suppose DJ was a backstabber, but I didn't care for his character anyway, and I think it could be argued that since he's only ever on his own side and no one else's, that he really doesn't back stab anyone. Finn and Rose should have known better than to trust him. Hux seemed a lot more ineffectual in this film than the last but he didn't have as much of a role in The Force Awakens either, and I enjoyed the comedy with him. As for Luke, I didn't think he was OOC and I was quite pleased with his development in the film. I suppose most of the fandom is still mixed on that.

Yes, good point. Finn and Poe both developed and grew through the film and I got the sense that especially Poe came away at the end with an appreciation for what Holdo and Leia where trying to teach him, especially when he recognized the opportunity to escape the predicament they were in near the end.

The point though is that all the Rebel's of the female variety seemed to be fully formed wisdom wise prior to the start of the film. Even Rey and Rose's massive gambles worked out pretty well, which using the logic we just looked at with Poe, thematically shouldn't have. Again, not a significant grip, just a pattern.

As for Darth Emo, I'm really not a fan. To me he completely lacks the sinister aura that Vader brought to the original trilogy. Between him, Snoke and Hux the bad guys come off as the Keystone Cops of the film. I never really sensed the rebels were in an existential crisis with these guys opposing them. As for the love story, did I miss something? Was that what was supposed to be going on between Emo and Rey? I think some of it was compelling because in a lot of ways both characters were on the opposite ends of the same journey. I never really felt any kind of kinship between them but maybe that wasn't the point.

I think the disparity between the genders is basically because Leia and Huldo are both the leaders so they are more experienced and less reckless than say Poe. Ackbar dies so he's not there to support the male side in the film. Phasma though is as insignificant as usual. Rose, I'd argue, goes through a similar change as Finn does. She starts off literally refusing to let people desert, even though she doesn't really have the right to do that, but because her own sister died for the cause, she can't think of anything else more important. Yet, she's just as complicit as Finn in trusting DJ, so that backfires equally on her. And by the end, she saves Finn from sacrificing himself, showing that she realizes now that maybe it's not always the best option to be a martyr, which is similar to the same lesson Poe learns. So I'd say she grows too and becomes less rigid to the cause. Rey is the main character and her gamble only somewhat pays off. She survives, but she fails to bring Ben back to the light side, which is what she was counting on.

I think Ben isn't supposed to represent the same type of character as Vader though. The promos for Force Awakens made it seem like that, but it was clear in the film, that they meant to humanize him, and especially in this one. Hence, why he destroys his mask and never puts it on again. He's a Vader wannabe who desperately wants to be like him but isn't sure he has it in him or is willing to pay the cost. Even when he does pay the price, we see that he still knows he isn't Darth Vader, because there's still someone way more powerful than him out there (Luke), hence why he's so desperate to destroy him. I do think there's a lot more depth to his character, but that might also be a generational thing. I felt a lot of kinship for Rey and Ben myself, and I know that most of the people who loved the film, similarly felt so. In fact, it was one of the best parts of the film for them, even people who didn't like Ben before. I'm not sure I expect them to end up together with a happily ever after in Episode IX, but I loved what we got between them in The Last Jedi.

A generational thing huh. I guess you think I'm too old and senile to get the complexities of what the next generation finds romantic. Ouch.

I'll take your word that there was deep love story going on there because I don't really see it. I get that's what they were going for but for me it fell short. It's probably my antiquated values.

If Emo wasn't supposed to be the threatening villain then I guess that was supposed to be Snoke, the guy who got cut in half by this under performing apprentice? Even Palpatine had the decency to delay his own demise to a third movie and Vader was a credible threat.

As for Rose, ramming two rusty old speeders together didn't seem like the greatest plan ever devised. She was as likely to kill both of them as save Finn, but the gamble worked out, as they both survived. So is the moral to take crazy risks or not?

Anyways none of this detracted from my enjoyment of the film. Just minor grips.

I've found in my experience that Ben is a character who is more relatable to the more angst-filled generation so take that as a compliment. I also think that he has a strong female fanbase as compared to Darth Vader.

I'm not sure even love story might be the correct term, although it could certainly be construed that way. There is definitely a connection between the two though. That much was established in The Force Awakens as well.

I think Snoke was just there to set up how Ben fell to the dark side, but otherwise, he was never intended as more than a plot device. Hence why he was killed off so soon, because he wasn't necessary anymore, plus it subverted expectations. I remember that even when Rey entered his throne room, it still didn't dawn on me that this would be the final battle between the two. I expected that the next movie (Episode IX) would also have to contrive a reason now for Rey to return to this same throne room for the final final battle, if that makes sense. So I'm glad that they just got it over with. Snoke is no Palpatine, but he wasn't intended to be.

Yeah, Rose's plan didn't seem very well-crafted but neither did Finn's tbh. I wasn't sure how he survived just the journey to where he wanted to crash into. I expected he would have died way before he reached his goal. I can't speak for the moral though.

All fair and complement most definitely taken. It's the bolded that caught me. Are you sure a fit, angst-ridden, relatively attractive, 30 something man carries more appeal to the female of a species than an old man in plastic gimp suit? You're really taking risks today.

Maybe that's just a me thing. It's quite possible that every other girl of my generation actually does prefer Vader. If we're being really honest, I would prefer Hayden Christensen, but I have a nagging feeling that he was not who you were referring to.
