I'm thinking about picking up this book off eBay soon, as I've heard it's really good (provided you're interested in the topic). It's value as a price guide is dubious; but as a catalog of all the various records Disney released over the decades up to their last official release (Oliver & Company), it's supposed to be a great book.

This is going to come at a big surprise to you but in the 40's they didn't have computers.

Dang'ole talkabout thousands of hand drawn pictures and glass impressionist paintings. Then they had that huge machine where they put a camera on top and glass slides of backgronds on the bottom to make it look, you know, 3D. Then dang'ole talkabout that abstract art man you know when Bambi and Ronno are having there huge brawl. It's just beautiful man. Beautiful!
One of the many reasons why I appreciate this film.
Took them about 6 years to make the movie I think (could be wrong).
They would of had the movie done faster if it wasn't for WWII. Man, Hitler was a jerk!

7 years!..it took them 7 yrs..longer than most are in college (Except for tommy boy and doctors
). The Multi-plane camera was quite well used too. Just amazing all the work and time, and it shows..Bambi is such a unique film and the story is probably the most timeless i've ever hear (besides the Bible of course) and the end does confirm that Bambi was Walt Disney, Ollie Johnson and Frank Thomas's favorite film. The storytelling and animation will NEVER be matched, and its a story that every generation knows (I dare you to find someone who dosen't know who Bambi is)
More than anything though I truly came to enjoy the character of Bambi, for some reason I can relate to the guy, he makes you feel empathy on a different level than any other character i've ever seen before..
There is a great part of the book where Bambi and the Prince saw the hunter dead and Bambi realizes there is a higher power above Man..a "god" over all of us..truely was an inspiring part of the book and wished it would of made the film.

This must be the Bambi thread...
Okay so, before 3 weeks ago I hadn't watched this in YEARS! And I mean years. So I thought well hey, let's watch Walt Disney's famous Deer movie.
Honestly, I got kind of bored
Like it was okay, and I can see why people like it so much with all the cute animals and loving songs. Animation is really good, so good job to all those animators and background painters. It kind of reminded me of The Lion King, and I hear that one is like the modernized version of this one. Sadly, I think I'd rather re-watch The Lion King again then this one.
One part I really did like was when Friend Owl was talking about when they become Twiterpated and yes, my face flushed with red when I heard that, we all know the "Twiterpated" incident again I'm really sorry Dave!
and they said it like 20 times lol, sheeze just thinking about that me feel a little warmer heh. Anyways I was cracking up at his explanation of twiterpated, I rewinded that part like twice lol. I still don't like that Pheasent Bird, actually, not too long ago my best friend and I watched only that part of Bambi, so I rememberd that scene very well. It's still all her fault why those animals died! But I guess in a state of panic you can't help yourself.
Anyways, "it was a little too dry for my taste" but perhaps Bambi is one of those movies that grow on you with time. Like I use to hate Sleeping Beauty but now thats become on of my favorites. So I'm hoping the next time I watch Bambi I will like it more then I did the last time.

Re: Bambi Discussion
So this has become one of my favorite films. It's beautiful in story and look! But some people think it's sexist? I want to ask people's opinions on this.
The only thing really sexist I can see is that the adult males don't care for the children (or at least, unless the mother dies...!). But that's not sexist to me as I believe that's what actually happens to many animals in the wild, namely the deer and rabbits where we really see this in the film. Anyone know for sure? The only other things I can see as maybe sexist are when Thumper is seen relaxing and getting played with by his girlfriend (her real name is Blossom? Can anyone confirm?) so she does the work while he doesn't...? Is that really sexist? And then there's Bambi fighting with Ronno over Faline. I guess a man fighting while a woman doesn't is...no, I don't even see why that one is sexist. I mean women can fight other women over a man, too. Is that sexist? I don't really think any of this stuff is sexist.
So what do you guys think?

Re: Bambi Discussion
I'm shocked anyone called this film sexist. Did you actually hear that somewhere? Disney gets a lot of flack, often unnecessarily, but sexism in Bambi is something new altogether. I don't know much about deer, but from this film, I always assumed that the male deer doesn't raise his child hence why the Great Prince of the Forest is so distant. Especially, since in his case, he is the prince of the forest so his responsibility extends beyond one child. I don't consider the ending with Ronno sexist either, considering how often situations like that happen in real life, even if you flip the gender (as in two girls fighting over a guy).Disney Duster wrote:So this has become one of my favorite films. I didn't know that Thumper's mate was named Blossom. Disney always calls her Miss Bunny, but if Blossom is her real name, I prefer that. Miss Bunny is barely a name anyway. I wish Flower's mate had a name. I don't think she has one at all and sadly, unlike Miss Bunny, she never gets merchandised either.

Re: Bambi Discussion
I’ve always considered the film sexist because the female characters are only there to make babies and not much else, just like The Lion King (which imitates it). Of course, it’s more forgivable from a film in the ‘40s and the characters in Bambi do act much more like real animals than in TLK.

Listening to most often lately:
Taylor Swift ~ ~ "The Fate of Ophelia"
Taylor Swift ~ "Eldest Daughter"
Taylor Swift ~ "CANCELLED!"

One person told me the film was sexist, and I just thought I remembered other people saying it was.
Disney Wiki says her name is Blossom. I never noticed she got merchandise.
I guess the Prince of the Forest would sire more than one kid and have too much responsibility.
I guess the females are almost only there to make babies like the Lion King! But they are also there to raise the babies which this film makes an important point and is half the movie, and Faline does at least have some romance with Bambi. So I don't think it's sexist. Nala also gets Simba to come back to Pride Rock. And all the females hunt for food, too.

Miss Bunny gets merchandise sometimes, but usually most often in Japan. They seem to love female counterparts like Miss Bunny and Clarice (love interest of Chip and Dale) over there. I checked Disney Wiki, but I can't find her name being Blossom on there. Would you mind posting a link?Disney Duster wrote:One person told me the film was sexist, and I just thought I remembered other people saying it was.

I did check Flower's love interest on Disney Wiki and they call her Miss Skunk, which I guess goes well with Miss Bunny. Apparently an alternate name for her is Bluebelle but I'm not sure where that came from.
Oh, I hope the Prince of the Forest would only mate with Bambi's mother. That would certainly change my opinion of him entirely. I always just assumed that male deer don't take care of their young since child abandonment is pretty common in the animal world. And it's catching on in the human world too!
I definitely never saw Nala's role as being sexist especially with her increased role in the Broadway musical and with Beyonce playing her now, I'm sure her role will only get even larger.

I swear Disney Wiki called her Blossom but Googling I can't find the link, just the one for Miss Bunny:

I'll have to keep an eye out then for the name of Blossom. Funny how Disney just named the female counterparts Miss Bunny and Miss Skunk.Disney Duster wrote:I swear Disney Wiki called her Blossom but Googling I can't find the link, just the one for Miss Bunny:
