Cars 4?

Post by Sotiris »

It looks like the 3rd film might not be the last, after all. I'm shocked!

Director Brian Fee and the producer Kevin Reher comment on whether a 4th installment is in the cards.
Brian Fee wrote:Where the franchise goes from here, I have no idea what may be down the road, but I can tell you that for Lightning McQueen, as a character, I think by the end of the movie it’s safe to say that this is only the beginning for him.

Brian Fee wrote:People ask, 'Is there a Cars 4?,' and I say, 'If there’s a story.' But also, you want it to be the right story.

Brian Fee wrote:There are currently no plans for another installment, but never say, especially when working with John Lasseter.

Q: Can we say this movie is the end of the franchise?

Kevin Reher: Well if you have a good idea for Cars 4 let us know!

Brian Fee: If there is a story to tell, we would say we could continue, even now I see it as something too far away.

Q: I had a chance to ask the filmmakers about the potential for Cars 4. Is there more to the story of Lightning McQueen?

Brian Fee: I don't know. I'm not sure. I actually don't know the future of the franchise. I don't know where we'll go after that. I don't know if we'll make one. If we do, will it be more McQueen? This is the third act but I don't know how many acts he has in his life. Will other characters be main characters? At this point I have no idea. I think anything's possible.

Kevin Reher: I don't know, there might be. If there's a good story to tell. I mean our heads kind of break after having gotten this one done. Like oh my god, what could you do the further adventures of? But like any sequel, from Toy Story 4 to Incredibles, as long as there's a good story to tell it's worth investing. We do love these characters. We love them as much as the public does. It'll be interesting to see if Cruz is a breakout character, kind of like Mater was. Does she resonate with people? Would she be involved in a 4? Who knows?

Kevin Reher wrote:We don't have any plans for a Cars 4 so...and today we've gotten that question asked a number of times. It's kind of like if somebody has a really good idea for a Cars 4, sure there might be a Cars 4 but right now we don't have one and we're not actively going, "Okay, let's get a team on Cars 4." We'll see what happens.

It's interesting they mentioned Cruz. Maybe they'd test the waters with some Cruz-centric Cars Toons?

I don't think they would shut down the idea of a sequel to anything to be honest. They used to do that as recently as, up I think. But I think they caught on that the internet remembers things so its best to just say "never say never" even they fully intend to never make another.

I think the future will just be a tv show. At least I hope.

They might as well. I mean they kept rattling off more Ice Age, Shrek and Despicable Me. However, just becuase they make them doesn't mean anyone has to go see them.

Hmm.
EW asked the film’s director, Cars veteran Brian Fee, and Pixar/Disney animation chief creative officer John Lasseter what they thought about where the franchise stands after Cars 3. Whether it’s with a fourth film, a follow-up short (a.k.a. the Toy Story model) or a medium yet to be determined, this race is likely far from over.

“We don’t know—we’ve just concentrated on getting this one out—but we love the world, and it was really important for me to have it end with the ability that Lightning McQueen can still race,” says Lasseter, who has often been vocal about his passion for the Cars franchise from the beginning. “He’s not quitting racing. He can still race, and it’s up to him. It’s his choice. He’s just, right at this moment, really excited to help Cruz Ramirez. But the options are wide open for future stories.”

I have a feeling the franchise will not end before Lasseter decides to retire. After all, just as Mickey Mouse was Walt Disney's alter ego, Mater is Lasseter's alter ego and the Cars universe has therefore a special meaning for him:

http://www.smh.com.au/entertainment/mov ... 1g4cm.html
''I really relate to Mater,'' Lasseter says. ''Both of my parents [are] from Arkansas and I've always felt like a little bit of an outsider most of my life. I always find myself looking at things from a Mater and McQueen point of view, travelling around the world.''

A sense of alienation is a terrible thing to waste. Lasseter put the embarrassment to good use as he imagined the response of Mater, his Cars alter-ego, to that situation.

While the third Cars installment underperformed at the box office, the revenue from consumer products could be enough to greenlit a fourth one.
Christine McCarthy, Senior Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer of The Walt Disney Company:

"Cars is still a very strong franchise for us. So, even though the theatrical release of [Cars 3] under-performed and the performance of consumer products in this calendar year was a little bit lighter that we would have liked it to be, it's still one of our strongest franchises. When we talk about some of the franchises that are over a billion dollars annually, Cars is in there."

That can also be understandable given Cars 2 was crap. Cars 3 though, it surprisingly amazing to me. To me it's the true Cars 2.

Agreed a million times. I was very happy to find that Cars 3 was actually good.

Jay Ward, the ‘creative director for franchise’ at Pixar Animation Studio, popped up at the 2023 Porsche Rennsport Reunion Event where he was interviewed by The Late Brake Show. During the conversation, the episode’s host Jonny Smith asked Ward about more Cars projects to which he responded that they were working on something, but the public probably won’t see it for a couple of years:

“There are more Cars things brewing, I can’t say much more yet. Cars has got a life that will keep going. I am working on some real fun projects right now that you will see in a couple of years. It takes us a while to make them.”

Cars was ok.
I didn’t hate Cars 2 as much as some did.
I haven’t seen Cars 3 yet.
Cars 4 to me would be totally unnecessary.

I do adore Carsland at Disney California Adventure. Radiator Springs Racers is far superior to what Test Track has become.

It was ok. I just remember how many negative comments there were, and when I finally saw it, I found it fairly entertaining. I’m just not a big fans of cars in general. I drive a 2016 Honda and as long as it gets me from point A to point B, that’s all I care about. And that it has Sirius radio and a CD player...

Owen Wilson wrote:Of course, I could never have imagined that it would continue on the way it has. Just a week ago, I was recording something. They’re doing something with Lightning McQueen that I went in for and found myself saying, 'Ka-Chow.' I asked them, 'There must be a bank of Ka-Chows that you have at this point.' The idea that, 20 years in, I’m going to have a different Ka-Chow than I’ve already said, but I guess they’re still looking for that perfect Ka-Chow. They’re chasing it.

That may be for the new Cars attraction coming to the Magic Kingdom. I doubt it is for a new movie, as it seems from that quote that it was a short recording session.
