Re: Pixar Is Making More Sequels
Why am I not surprised that Pixar’s missteps are getting blamed on Big Bad Evil Disney despite Lasseter being in control of both studios? Such an easy way to deflect any actual blame from falling on Pixar.
And only fanboyism could make the neverending director replacements/firings that plague Pixar seem like a good thing.

The Atlantic just came out with an article about PIXAR.
How Pixar Lost Its Way
For 15 years, the animation studio was the best on the planet. Then Disney bought it.

Pretty much my feeling on the whole thing. Don't misunderstand me. I realize Disney is not without its skeletons in the closet but it's almost become a bit of a childish joke to just pin the blame all on Disney for someone else's problems. People have blamed Disney for the way Brave turned out even though as we know it was JOHN LASSETER who fired Brenda Chapman because it was "not Pixar enough."Disney's Divinity wrote:Why am I not surprised that Pixar’s missteps are getting blamed on Big Bad Evil Disney despite Lasseter being in control of both studios? And while we're on the subject of Brave, I love how people complain about how they just gave it the award because it was a Pixar movie even though they were practically cheerleading Pixar getting the oscar without even really questioning the possibility that the other nominated animated features might just be better.

John Lassiter is a fucking hack, he doesn't seem to know how to write any story that isn't a dumb buddy comedy road trip. Change the setting and a little of the characters, but they're all essentially Toy Story In Disguise.

I've noticed this too. They like to pretend like they're not like ~other~ studios and that to them "story is king".

Other than the Book of Life knock-off they have nothing original for the rest of this decade. They have those 2 features coming out 90 days from each other: March 2020/June 2020, Pixar can piss offSotiris wrote:I've noticed that too. When Pixar has 3 new animated features in a year's time & WDAS has nothing, something there just doesn't seem right.jazzflower92 wrote:And it's this kind of attitude is why I don't frequent these threads due to how negative and sour people have become.thedisneyspirit wrote:John Lassiter is a fucking hack, he doesn't seem to know how to write any story that isn't a dumb buddy comedy road trip. They are creating a sequel for Boss Baby and Trolls, yet still harp on Pixar for it's upcoming sequels even though it looks like it still is going to make original movies in the next decade coming up.

Re: Pixar Is Making More Sequels
Sorry for being negative, but we say these things because we have deep affection for Disney and PIXAR. We want them to make great films.
A slate that exists mainly of sequels to Toy Story, Frozen, Cars and The Incredibles is not what we consider great. Quite the opposite actually.
Literally nobody asked for another Toy Story. The trilogy concluded brilliantly. Monsters, University, Cars 2 and Finding Dory suggest Pixar is not up to the task of creating sequels that were never in demand, therefore the odds are very much against another Toy Story.
The lack of original movies coming up is depressing...

Re: Pixar Is Making More Sequels
So, I am currently watching the new projection show at Hollywood Studios (it's about live-action Disney films), and I had this thought:
Maybe John Lasseter, Ed Catmull, etc., want Disney to only make live-action films (hence all the re-makes and pushing back Gigantic? Maybe it's a long-shot, maybe it's true. But then Disney couldn't make Pixar look bad or something.
I'm not sure if I believe that this is the case, but I wouldn't put it past them, necessarily. (I don't think that JL wants Disney to put out crap, either.)
Now, I did want to say that I'm not trying to be Negative Nancy...while I've never made it a secret that I don't like John Lasseter being in charge of Disney and Pixar, I'm one of the few here who's looking forward to Cars 2, and I'm not as angered about Pixar making so many sequels (TS3 and FD are my most-favorite Pixar films, which are both sequels)...

Why would they push Gigantic for remakes of movies?blackcauldron85 wrote:Maybe John Lasseter, Ed Catmull, etc., want Disney to only make live-action films (hence all the re-makes and pushing back Gigantic? Re: Pixar Is Making More Sequels
I have no inside news, and am just speculating. But when people say, Frozen/Big Hero 6/Zootopia/Moana are just as good as/better than Pixar films, and "Pixar is getting lazy, we don't need more Toy Story/Monsters/Nemo/Cars films," I just can't see John Lasster, Ed Catmull, etc, being okay with that. Maybe it will just inspire Pixar to make even better movies, maybe they don't care, I have no clue. Just wanted to say what I was thinking.

Re: Pixar Is Making More Sequels
I have a feeling that Disney and Pixar are essentially going to play a game of tag team. For a period of time, Disney gets the majority of Lasseter's focus (and Disney has been the priority ‘til now considering they had to build up their image again). I expect that the focus will shift back to Pixar now, with Disney taking its turn getting the shaft/producing mostly sequels (to WIR, BH6, Frozen, and Zootopia).

Re: Pixar Is Making More Sequels
John Lasseter doesn't really have much of a say in the live-action film department and the films that greenlit there. I just think Disney is doing these re-dos, because they do exceptionally well. I don't think there's a large conspiracy theory at play here. Lasseter's name is in the credits of Disney's animated features, too. Why would he risk his reputation by forcing WDAS to make subpar films?

I don't think he wants them to make subpar films (like you said, his name is on these films), just maybe less Disney anination.

I can imagine this is John Lasseter's reaction:Pixar to focus on "original films" after Toy Story 4
Pixar producer Mark Nielsen has now admitted to The Hollywood Reporter that there is "a lot of optimism about the future of the studio", and that the focus will be on originals going forward.
"Docter's really looking out for the new voices and really loading up the development pool. It's all original films after this one right now."
