Re: Pixar's Coco

Post by D82 »

It seems that a different teaser trailer is being shown in theaters in front of Beauty and the Beast, but probably only in Mexico. Somebody recorded it:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=70vRHtwmctI

A new still has been released:
http://static.xonefm.com/upload/images/ ... coco/5.jpg

And The Pixar Post gives us more details about the breed of Miguel's dog:
Since this trailer focuses on Dante, we thought we'd also share a few details about the breed and how it connects to the film. The traditional Mexican hairless dog, the Xoloitzcuintli, was long regarded as a guardian and protector of the indigenous people who believed that the Xolo would safeguard their home from evil spirits as well as intruders. In ancient times the Xolos were often sacrificed and then buried with their owners to act as a guide to the soul on its journey to the underworld.

They did the archival footage thing in Toy Story 2, Ratatouille, and Wall-E as well.

Most of their films make use of both, including Coco. So, it's not a radical shift but it's tiresome regardless. I'm actually more tired of their formula of having two unlikely characters go on a road trip together and become closer in the end. It's evident by now that Pixar (and by extension WDAS under Lasseter) are incapable of deviating from that structure.

Me too but not because the teaser was "bad". It was actually one of their better ones. I just have outgrown Pixar's brand of storytelling.

I didn't like the design of the musician; he looks too caricatured, especially compared to Miguel. I also didn't care for the narration. The magical leaves reminded me of Pocahontas.

I'm still curious as to what does the name mean, it's spanish for coconut (iirc the origin of the name for it outside of the polynesian circles came from the Spanish) and a name given to the boogeyman, but I don't know how is that connected to mexican folklore...

Miguel's great-grandmother is called Mama Coco. The film is probably named after her.

D82, thanks for posting the 2nd trailer!! I would watch a movie with just Dante-- I hope he is on the journey with Miguel for the majority of the movie. As much as I like talking animals, apparently I'm craving a "pantomime" dog, because already I absolutely can't wait to see more of him!

I think what annoys me is how cliche the guy's little speech was. It just doesn't sound genuine to me and makes me want to roll me eyes.

Every time an artist gets to make a personal film at PIXAR nowadays it's heavy on sentimentality and deals with childhood in the most literal way possible. After Up and Sanjay's super team, again we see our protagonist as a child sitting in front of the tv. Is this how the storytellers at PIXAR see themselves when they have to tell a story?

The Pixar formula has shifted from gimmicks like "the secret life of ...." to a sentimental road trip where everything and everyone has FEELINGS!!! *gasp*.

Indeed! I couldn't have said better myself! The trailer practically seemed a Latin American version of Ratatouille in an quite overt and obvious way. Despite that this will definitively be a departure from the studio, due to it being a full-blown musical. Imagine if Coco was released five years ago during the haydays of Pixar. Due to how most Pixar fanboys were whining about the Disney tropes in Brave (which had a very brief drinking song-number in it sung by a character), I bet the havoc would be immense.

With all due respect and not to sound/be mean here, Jules is right. I have noticed over these couple months that you are very very negative over literally everything Disney's releasing. Which isn't bad at all, it's fine. :) But if it's not Menken or if John Lasseter breathes on it, it seems like you immediately don't like it

It's the same video that was shown as a teaser trailer in front of Beauty and the Beast in some cinemas, and that someone recorded and uploaded to Youtube. But now they are presenting it as a short film:
The endearingly goofy Xolo, aka Mexican hairless dog, is the star of Dante’s Lunch — A Short Tail, the new Pixar short premiering exclusively on Yahoo Movies. (Watch it above.) The two-minute film was created early in the animation process by Coco director Lee Unkrich and his team so that they could get a better sense of their four-legged supporting star. “We just were really happy with how it came out and thought we would share it with the world as a little appetizer until the movie comes out,” Unkrich tells Yahoo Movies.
So this footage won't appear in the final film. Some new details about Coco were revealed in the article as well:

not liking the dog much. for some reason we can have a horse and a little boy that act dog like [maximus and spot], but the dog has to act like something completely deranged and looney-tune-ish. the bit with the tongue wrapping around the bone reminded me of something from road runner.

Beautiful poster! In the link there are also new character descriptions that include some casting announcements and new story details. Also, according to Pixar Post, a new trailer is arriving soon.
It should also be noted that Pixar Post Forum user, Luis, recently spotted that the Alberta film ratings website has recently classified the next trailer for Coco. This typically means that a new trailer would be coming in the next seven-to-fourteen days. At one-minute-and-forty seconds in length, we'll probably get introduced to more of Miguel's family — We can't wait to meet the family (living and non-living).
