Slate states that if Zootopia wins the Best Animated Feature Oscar this Sunday evening, it will be the Crash of Best Animated Feature wins. Looking better for Kubo's big upset everyday.

Most of the sites that cover awards season are predicting Zootopia to get the Oscar. But I know Kubo also has a high probability of winning. We'll see what happens tomorrow. :biting:

I haven't seen My Life as a Zucchini yet, but of the rest of nominated films, Zootopia is the film who deserves the Oscar the most in my opinion. I know Laika deserves to win an award too, but I hope it's not this year. Kubo and the Two Strings isn't a bad film. It's visually stunning and highly imaginative. It also has good characters and the story captures you from the beginning, but the plot twists of the latter half of the movie ruin the film for me. The reveal that the beetle is Kubo’s father and that he and the monkey were once married is not believable in my opinion. And I find it a bit cruel that Kubo discovers that both his parents are still alive only to lose them again before the movie ends. Also, many things have no explanation. Sometimes I like that not everything is explained because it adds a bit of mystery, but on this occasion I would’ve liked some things clarified. Like, for example, why Kubo’s mother is not ill anymore when she’s in monkey’s form. Well, I’ve only seen the film once, maybe there are things I didn’t get. But I don’t think it deserves so high praise as it has got.

By the way, I've noticed that Disney has been giving Zootopia a final push in its Oscar campaign. They've released two clips of two key scenes recently ("Popsicle" Clip and "Gondola" Clip) and these "pun-y" posters, for example. And while the latest Zootopia FYC ads are highlighting the film's message, the Moana ones (ad 1 and ad 2) clearly promote the song over Best Animated Feature, which is logical giving that Zootopia has more chances of winning in that category and Moana in Best Song.

The Oscar winners are out! Here are the results for the categories in which animated productions were competing.

Best Animated Feature: Zootopia

Best Animated Short: Piper. The last time Pixar won in this category was in 2000 for For the Birds. Academy members have a thing for CG birds, apparently.

Best Documentary Feature: O.J.: Made in America

Best Original Song: City of Stars (from La La Land)

Best Visual Effects: The Jungle Book

meh. :|
I agree with that Slate article. It wasn't a bad movie, but I just didn't see what the fuss was about.

That's a very cute sketch of Moana and Nick though.

I was so relieved when I heard Zootopia was the winner! :D I'm also glad Piper won the Oscar. I didn't believe it was going to win even though it was the favorite for the award because Pixar hasn't got Best Animated Short in so many years.

A lot of people were upset "and still are" that the Anime block-buster "Your Name" didn't receive an Oscar nod for Best Animated Feature. Well earlier today the movie couldn't even win the major award in it's own country, as Your Name was upset by In this Corner of the World at the Japan Academy Prize Awards. So while it has the notion of being the Highest grossing Anime of all time, it's not an awards darling.

I'm honestly not surprised that In This Corner of the World took home the award in Japan. As strong as Your Name's reception was, both among critics and the general population, Corner was clearly the critical darling. It was also voted the #1 movie of 2016 by Kinema Junpo, a highly prestigious film publication in Japan--and it was only the second time an animated film achieved the top spot, the first time being Totoro in 1988. And the film has been a commercial success in its own right, as it has spent 15 straight weeks in the top 10.

I would say it would be a strong contender to be nominated for this year's Oscar had GKIDS gotten the rights, but it seems Shout! Factory is handling US distribution, so I'm not so sure. They did distribute Long Way North last year though, which was nominated for the Indie Annie, so they may be becoming a bigger force in the distribution of foreign animated films.
