Moana
Re: Moana
Moana does a Critic's Choice awards repeat at the Golden Globes, losing again Best original Song to La La Land & Animated Feature to Zootopia. I think Disney should just stop wasting it's time with Moana this awards season & just focus on Zootopia for that elusive Oscar.

Found this quote on Moana's Tumblr page. As I recall The Princess & the Frog didn't win any globes or Oscars in Obama's America back in 2010 & I doubt this person knows anything about Pixar Mexican feature Coco

Besides these things have been in production way long before Trump was made president, and I don't think him being president will prevent more movies with non-European settings from being made.
Re: Moana
I agree, this is just Moana's tumblr fanbase upset that their film didn't win. But they shouldn't be using racism as the reason Moana is losing awards.jazzflower92 wrote:DisneyEra wrote:Found this quote on Moana's Tumblr page. Re: Moana
Certainly over dramatic, and completely disregards the fact that the winner, Zootopia, very directly handled the issues of discrimination and prejudice in society. But I can understand where the poster's sentiment comes from-- 2016 wasn't a good year for anybody.
I, for one, was very happy to see the gay director of a Disney family film thank his husband on a nationally televised awards show.

Re: Moana
Yeah, this isn't winning anything.
I was very happy to get two amazing WDAS films last year, but it would have been nice if they spaced them out better to have one this year. Both are worthy of awards acclaim, unlike 2015's two Pixar films where almost everyone agreed Inside Out was far superior to The Good Dinosaur.
Best Song would have been a nice consolation prize and historic EGOT win for Lin-Manuel Miranda, but that will have to wait too since La La Land is too powerful.
The anger is misplaced and dramatic in this case, but I get the frustration that Moana isn't getting the recognition it deserves in the eyes of its biggest fans. It's still been a big success, but not a Frozen-level success (not that that could even be expected) and I do think race plays a role in its mainstream crossover appeal. Unfortunately those feelings are magnified by the looming Trump presidency and the emboldening of racists everywhere around the world
People should be directing their anger at ANTHROPOMORPHIC ANIMALS instead because Sing did more to deflate Moana's box office performance than anything and now Zootopia is robbing it of its awards

This person also seems to have missed Fences and Moonlight won Globes last night. There does exist a world of film outside animation.DisneyEra wrote:Found this quote on Moana's Tumblr page. I would have liked to see How Far I'll Go win, but the soundtrack of La La Land is fantastic and also a rarity as we don't often see popular live-action Hollywood musicals not adapted from a stage show. La La Land is something really special and its music absolutely deserves recognition.
Of course, I might be biased because La La Land is my favourite film of the year. It's been a while since my favourite has swept through the awards season like this.

yeah Im pretty bummed at how much Moana's being ignored at both the box office and awards. I really loved this film. Also I just dont get the adoration of Zootopia, it was an ok film but nothing more for me. I guess people really like funny talking animals(judging by how Sing is doing).
So is it safe to say that Moana will be another of those Disney animated films that ends up getting ignored? with its weak performance at the BO I cant see them giving it a tv series or sequel.
And I imagine it will be gone from toy shelves a few months after the dvd/blu-ray is released. I guess the only hope we fans have of seeing Moana in any form in the future is if they pull a Brave and just add her to the Princess line, where she will at least get some dolls occasinally, like Tiana & Merida do.

Re: Moana
Well, I don’t think it has anything to do with the awards--except in so far that how much money a movie makes seem to play a large factor in what usually wins animated feature--but not sure how you can deny that the race of the characters might have affected the B.O. performance of this and TP&TF when a man who essentially ran on a platform of White Power just took over the country. Zootopia by-passed that issue because none of the characters are human (and most are coded white anyway), plus the fact that the message wasn’t really advertised so much as “Look, cute, anthropomorphic animals! Awwww!”

Listening to most often lately:
Taylor Swift ~ ~ "The Fate of Ophelia"
Taylor Swift ~ "Eldest Daughter"
Taylor Swift ~ "CANCELLED!"
Re: Moana
I think this actually works in Moana's favor. One of the reasons Frozen is so hated is because it made "to much" at the Box office & won a lot of awards. the fact that Moana isn't as big as Frozen/Zootopia gives it an underdog status, a feature to rally around over the bigger more successful features. It's fan base reminds me of How to train your Dragon's. That movie grossed way less than Shrek/Madagascar & Kung-Fu Panda, but it's online fan base is extremely loyal to it. When it's sequel lost the Oscar to BH6, they were outraged. Just like Moana's fans were last night at the Golden Globes. Moana's fans also have a HUGE hatred for Frozen, calling it overrated, while Moana's songs & main character are much better. Moana will still gross over $500 million worldwide, which is amazing for an Original animated feature. It's fans will use this feature to counter the Billion $$ Frozen/Zootopia. As for Moana's future at Disney, i'm not sure. Have there been any articles about Disney being "Disappointed" with Moana's Box office? All I keep hearing with Disney is Rouge One & Beauty & the Beast.unprincess wrote:yeah Im pretty bummed at how much Moana's being ignored at both the box office and awards. I really loved this film. Re: Moana
La La land just broke the record for most Golden Globes won by a single feature, 7! So it made history last night. I just didn't like Moana's Tumblr fans claiming it lost because of Racism. I still believe Moana can pull a Big Hero 6 at this years Oscars, but La La Land & Zoo are just to strong. Next up are the Annies "Feb 4" & the BAFTAs "Feb 12" so we'll see if Zoo will continue to run the table towards the Oscar or will Moana finally win something.estefan wrote:This person also seems to have missed Fences and Moonlight won Globes last night. Re: Moana
no all Ive heard is conjecture from forums. I dont think it comes to a surprise to anyone that this movie was gonna be a lesser BO performer due to the minority cast...yes I do think it factors into the numbers both in the States and overseas, where Ive also heard its been a poor performer. An GG/Academy Award win would at least maybe helped garner it more attention a bit.
I hope it at least does Wreck it Ralph/BH6 numbers, though the former is only getting a sequel b/c one of the directors was involved with Zootopia and the latter aseries b/c of the Marvel connection.
I dont hate Frozen myself btw, I actually loved it, but I just know Disney's gonna compare all their future princess films success to it, which is really unfair.

Scott Mendelson of Forbes explains Moana is no Frozen, but still a big hit.

Saw the movie today and I'm speechless. Way better than Zootopia, in my opinion. I actually think this is the best Disney movie in years.

Re: Moana
DisneyEra, the Forbes article was really good (and very detailed with all those BO stats!) I just hope Disney takes what it had to say into consideration. I like this part:
The reason any of this matters is that, while Zootopia and Finding Dory were both technically female-led animated features, Moana is the one that was both a princess-ish folktale and explicitly marketed with the female lead’s name in the title and with no shame about its “girl power” elements. So, if the film is perceived as an underperformer, it may well have consequences for an industry looking for any reason to view said “unconventional” release as a box office miss. It is important than the consensus views Moana as a relative hit, which it is, if we want more of its ilk.
the singalong is a good sign that they still have faith in the film, maybe it will help increase its BO a bit. Id love to go but the holidays have really left me bankrupt.
Id also love to see a short or tv special like they've done with Frozen but Im not sure thats something theyd consider worthy of the expense since again the movie's performance & impact hasnt exactly been of Frozen level.

Plus, Moana is doing better than WiR in United States, and that's getting a sequel. So, we really have nothing to worry about. But, will the sing-along be enough? The music isn't really getting buzz and reception like Frozen did

Re: Moana
Among the recent string of WDAS films, it has domestically outgrossed everything except for Frozen and Zootopia, and should reach around $250m. I'd say it's a certifiable hit, and if its performance is being perceived as lackluster, it must be because Frozen (the most recent fairytale musical) and Zootopia (the other WDAS film that came out in the same year) did so well. It is unfortunately doing slightly weaker in some foreign territories, though I think it should still be able to pull in a worldwide gross in Tangled/BH6 territory, which really isn't anything to sneeze at. (It still is yet to open in some decently-sized territories.) And depending on its performance in Japan once it drops in March, it could still have quite a bit of fuel left. Zootopia made it to $1b because it did massively well in China; Moana unfortunately didn't make much of an impact there comparatively.
I do think it's quite conceivable that its performance was handicapped a bit (even outside the US and in predominantly non-white territories) by its non-Europian/non-white setting/cast (which is also one of the big reasons I've always suspected that PATF under-performed, aside from it being released wide the weekend after Thankgiving), but it is by no means performing poorly. If anything, it is a success despite that.
As for the awards, it was always going to be an uphill battle considering La La Land and Zootopia are the critical darlings this time around.
