Re: Tangled TV Series in 2017
I remember the early designs for this looking differently than how it turned out (although still different from the film). I wonder what changed, because I kind of liked those early designs. The side-kicks look fine, Flynn looks...okay, but Rapunzel is the farthest off.

If there is a way bring her hair back, it's too bad nobody told Gothel.Warm Regards wrote:So I went back to watch the teaser again.
And actually, I think disneyprincess11 is right, they will somehow explain the hair growth.
On the walls you see paintings of scenes from the first movie. But you also see a brunette Rapunzel holding hands with her parents. Which implies she was brunette at some point and they aren't just pretending the end of the movie didn't happen

Re: Tangled TV Series in 2017
I.. like it. I think it looks pretty and reminds me of moving concept art. And I guess it helps Im used to shows done this way, since Ive watched & like Monster High and Ever After High as well as Lion Guard. To me this is still closer to hand drawn sensibilities than CGI, even if its still all made on computers.
yeah, I much prefer this to them trying to do it with tv budget CGI animation. I like Elena of Avalor but often cringe at how cheap some of the models and character movements look. I wish they would have used the show's 2d concept art using a style similar to this Tangled tv series style. It's better than it would look with the original 3D style on a smaller budget (like Sofia the First :shudder:)

Re: Tangled TV Series in 2017
It looks like "Tangled: Before Ever After" will be the TV movie that serves as a pilot to the series while the series itself will just be called "Tangled: The Series". They've done the same thing with "The Lion Guard" where they first released the pilot as a TV movie with the subtitle "Return of the Roar".D82 wrote:Regarding the title change, I guess they changed it to make it easier for the audience to identify it as a TV series, or so that it wasn't confused with the short's title which was very similar.

Ok, then maybe it was always planned that way and there wasn't any title change.Sotiris wrote:It looks like "Tangled: Before Ever After" will be the TV movie that serves as a pilot to the series while the series itself will just be called "Tangled: The Series". There's going to be a novel by Leila Howland based on Tangled: The Series.

Not even even low-budget, Flash-based TV animation gets to be just 2D anymore.
What Tom Bancroft is describing sounds similar to what Mercury Filmworks started doing with The Lion Guard.
Source: http://taughtbyapro.com/animation-podca ... interview/Tom Bancroft wrote:Mercury Filmworks is an awesome Canadian studio and they're doing a lot of the Disney TV animation shows like Jake and the Never Land Pirates, The Lion Guard, and the newest Tangled show that’s about to come out. They gave us a VIP tour which was really cool. […] They were working tradigitally which was awesome to see. They use Toon Boom which is like a Flash-style look but with a different program. They have made it into an art form. It’s amazing the way they can do it. And they brought in CG elements too. We saw a scene from Tangled that somebody was working on their Cintiq. He was a CG animator. He was doing a horse rearing back and doing all this full animation with basically a CG version of Rapunzel and then they put in her face from 2D. They add that separately on another level to make it look seamless.
What Tom Bancroft is describing sounds similar to what Mercury Filmworks started doing with The Lion Guard.
Source: https://inews.co.uk/essentials/culture/ ... made-roar/Christian Larocque, animation director at Mercury Filmworks, wanted to find a more fluid way of animating characters in the short amount of time he had available to him. His idea was to “rig” the character in 3D first, which meant creating a digital puppet of each animal character, which the animators could then spin around and see from every angle. It was this technique, thought to be the first of its kind, that allowed the team to put the cartoon characters in every conceivable position, whether they were jumping on to rocks or leaping into the air. This allowed them to see how the characters would move in any given situation. “The rig has all the points of articulation; all the joints of the character, the mouth movements, the eye movements,” says Riley. Once the animators had used the 3D rig to work out how each character would look in each position, they could translate that into a 2D model to give the animation that authentic, “handdrawn” look.
Re: Tangled: The Series
I see nothing wrong with it, they are essentially using the 3d models as reference to better inform the 2d drawings from the sound of it.
Reading that I was reminded of this video Stephen Silver put up recently promoting his new app.

Yea it sounds like they are making 3D models and then doing a 2D, hand-drawn version of them.

isnt that a little like what they did with Paperman, just more simplified? They probably cant afford the budget and time for a 2-d master like Glen Keane to help them make the models move more fluidly.

Re: Tangled: The Series
Judging from what Tom said, they're not merely using them as reference footage. They're superimposing drawings onto CG animation which is essentially a form of cel shading.Kyle wrote:they are essentially using the 3D models as reference to better inform the 2D drawings from the sound of it
Update: Background painter Laura Price confirms that 3D models are in fact used in the show.
Source: https://twitter.com/luludraws/status/831395654677114880Q: What is the technology used for the show? And does it have 3D modeling of characters in it?
Laura Price: It's animated in Harmony; the show is almost all 2D with some 3D models sprinkled in I think!

Is Rapunzel's friend secretly evil? She looks so evil from her facial expression to her clothes.

Re: Tangled: The Series
In the synopsis she's described as a "tough-as-nails handmaiden who becomes Rapunzel's confidant" so I doubt she'll be a villain. This looks like a classic antagonist-turned-friend scenario. I think in the pilot she'll be skeptical and unwelcoming towards Rapunzel but eventually Rapunzel will win her over.disneyprincess11 wrote:Is Rapunzel's friend secretly evil? Is it just me, or does her friend almost kind of looks like Mother Gothel?

I hope she's not a relative that they forgot to tell us about again.

You're right! I wonder if maybe she's a descendant family member Gothel never knew about, since I'm assuming she has relatives who procreated/died while she was "immortal." Maybe she's the girl's great great great great aunt or something. lolAvaitor wrote:Is it just me, or does her friend almost kind of looks like Mother Gothel?

Re: Tangled: The Series
well I sure hope she ends up a protagonist, b/c having the main protagonist who switches back to her cursed blonde hair from her natural brunette dark hair while having an antagonist with dark hair...yeah last thing Disney needs is the continuation of blonde hair as a positive trait and dark/black hair as a negative one.
