Mickey's Once Upon A Christmas Original Aspect Ratio

Post by Shauniew »

Does anyone know what the original aspect ratio of this film is? I have the region 1 DVD which as you know is 4:3 (or 1.33:1) fullscreen. In the UK the region 2 DVD is presented in 1.78:1 (Don't know if it's anamorphic or not).
I would like to get the widescreen version but would not be interested if it has been matted from an original 4:3 aspect ratio. The Internet Movie Database shows that the OAR is 1.33:1 but I suspect they have taken the info from the region 1 DVD release.
By the way, I've had a search for this and couldn't see anything on the forum already. I do apologise if this topic has already been raised.

My knowledge is exactly the same as yours! I too am unsure which is the oar, although i believe it may be the UK version, although i wouldn't put money on it!

Sorry i can't be more helpful, hopefully someone else here will know!

I can post some screencaps from the fullscreen Region 1 DVD, if that will help anyone with the R2 DVD arrive at a conclusion.

Here's a review that says that the region 2 & 4 are quote:
"presented in the widescreen aspect ratio of 1.78:1, which is 16x9 enhanced. While widescreen is good, this is not a genuine widescreen presentation, but rather a matted Full Frame format. The transfer looks a little vertically constrained at times, hence the impression that it is a matted Full Frame effort."
It also lists the OAR as 1.33:1 (Region 1).

I'm back and have just compared the region 1 and 2 DVDs for myself and although I've not watched it all the way through, the film was definitely made in widescreen.
The region 2 DVD shows more detail at the edges of the picture. For example, the star that flys around the screen at the beginning, on the widescreen version the star is in shot the whole time. The star on my region 1 DVD flys off the edge of the screen.
Thanks for your help guys, now I'm satisfied.

Mickey's Once Upon a Christmas

Post by Teen Artist »

I was wondering, what is the OAR for this DTV? For some reason at the beginning of my VHS it says "This film has been modified from its original version. It has been formatted to fit your TV." As far as I know, this doesn't make any sense. Is the DVD widescreen or something? Why would Disney do a DTV in widescreen? Do you think maybe they just got so used to putting that message on VHS that it was a mistake? Anyone know?

My DVD copy of Once Upon a Christmas is also in 1:33-1, so I would assume that this is the OAR of this particular DVD. It's really hard to say for sure, but I have never seen a widescreen version of this particular movie-either screened on TV or available for sale.

The UK version of this dvd is 1:78:1. The same aspect ratio as Mickey's Twice Upon a Christmas.

This was discussed here:

and yes, the DTV was made in Widescreen.
Most of my Blu-ray collection some of my UK discs aren't on their database

I'm a little late to the party but I was trying to figure this out myself. I attached a screen shot of the 4x3 DVD compared to the 16x9 bluray.
