Here's the Vietnamese music video for "How Far I'll Go". It's way better than Alessia Cara's version in my opinion, and I guess it's closer to the song in the film. There are a few new shots from the movie in the video as well.

Ok, thanks for the info!

DisneyFan09 wrote:The reprise of How Far I'll Go was superior to it's counterpart. So it means that the song is sung by Moana internally, due to her obviously not actually singing the song on the clip?
The first half of the reprise is sung internally, but we can see her singing during the latter half.

Here's a video in which the Vietnamese singer sings a multi-language version of the song along with other four singers from Southeast Asia, who have been chosen to perform a cover of the song for their respective countries, at an event in Singapore.

Lastly... Should I cancel my soundtrack pre-order or was the score at least good?
I really loved the movie. My only beefs are only a COUPLE of the lines can be too Dreamworks ("Fishes pee in you!") or too much on the nose with Disney ("If you sing, I'll throw up" and "Let me introduce myself....in song form!") and the fact if they could do the road trip better. The monsters in the underworld are literally 30 seconds long and the pirates & the crab are in one scene each and that's it. But, what makes up for is that for the rest of the time, Moana and Maui get to know each other, discover themselves etc. It's definitely worth the hype. It's just so beautiful, animation-wise, character development-wise, culturally-wise etc.!

I can't answer right now if I liked Moana or Zootopia better. As for the Oscars, it's definitely Disney to beat. Zootopia does have different messages from Disney about racism, judgement, and dreams. But, Moana is very classical Disney. The race is interesting, but I think it might be Moana.

Definitely keep the soundtrack. "Shiny" is the only mediocre song (I need time to warm up to it. The song itself threw me off guard.)
JeanGreyForever wrote:If you don't mind my asking, I have a couple of questions.

How do the songs compare to other movies of this decade? Like are they worse than Frozen but better than Tangled?
And what about the score especially compared to previous Musker and Clements movies like Aladdin and The Little Mermaid?
How does the grandmother being the spirit of the ocean work? I mean the ocean has always been around but the grandmother just dies so does her spirit become part of the ocean? Is it just her or is this a belief Moana's people have? And also is this why the ocean likes Moana, especially since you said it nearly drowns her in the beginning?
Does the lava goddess ever look like how she does in the concept art? I preferred that look over her trailer look. Also, just to be clear, there isn't a twist villain in the movie. The lava goddess just happens to be the good nature goddess who gets corrupted somehow and turns good again at the end of the film, right. Also how does she compare to other villains, both the ones from this decade and the classic ones?
1. Worse than Frozen. Mildly better than Princess and the Frog and way better than Tangled.
2. The score captures the Islands perfectly and it's incredibly stunning. Hoping this gets nominated (and possibly win!)
3. If you watch the Grandma clip, she says she wants to incarnate as a stingray. Immediately after she dies, her spirit becomes a ray and joins Moana. This is the very end of How Far I'll Go Reprise and it's incredible. So, her spirit follows her the whole time. She reveals herself in I Am Moana. In the finale, she becomes a real stingray. That's part of the reason why the ocean likes Moana. But, without the heart, the ocean is dangerous to her, like why she almost drowns.
4. Unfortunately, the lava goddess looks like the way she does in the trailers, NOT the art. I think she's one of the strongest Disney villains, being a total threat to our heroes and being purely evil though the evilness isn't its fault.
Good to hear that you really liked the movie and the soundtrack, when you mean by "worse than Frozen", do you mean "weaker"? And what did you think of the movie's CG animation as a whole?

Sorry, I've edited my post to warn about that. But, is it spoilery because they show too much of the Tamatoa scene or because of what Moana says? I can hear she says something about her grandma, but I didn't understand what she exactly says.

I just put a spoiler warning on the reply I wrote to yours!
What Moana says! I'm surprised that Disney included such a spoilery thing in a promo! I don't mind spoilers, but for people who do, they might not be happy. She says, "Don't, this is my grandma!"

Weaker :) The CGI animation makes Moana literally the most beautiful Disney movies, from the water to the colors to the animation itself. It is fabulous!

If you go to the Rock's IG story, you'll see the rap to You're Welcome! I am SO happy they're showing off "You're Welcome!" It's a fantastic number and I'm sure you guys will love it!

And you can get "We Know the Way" now. Ugh, this soundtrack is amazing :D :D :D

Thanks. And where would you rank this with the other "Revival Era" films? Starting with The Princess and the Frog.

Behind the scenes B-rolls (of course, there can be spoilers):

MOANA Voice Cast B-roll
MOANA Production B-roll
MOANA Music B-roll

In the videos we can hear more from the songs. Here's where the snippet of each song begins:

- "How Far I'll Go": https://youtu.be/EoTbjbutz7k?t=60

- A Moana song. I think it might be "Know Who You Are": https://youtu.be/EoTbjbutz7k?t=84

- "You're Welcome": https://youtu.be/EoTbjbutz7k?t=227

- "Shiny": https://youtu.be/EoTbjbutz7k?t=321

- "Where You Are": https://youtu.be/EoTbjbutz7k?t=512 (And also at the beginning of the music B-roll)

- "Know Who You Are": https://youtu.be/EoTbjbutz7k?t=611

Judging by that music B-roll, this might be the first Disney movie since the 90s that I'll listen to the entire score more than once for (incidental background music, not the music with lyrics). I always listen to Tarzan's score (particularly "A Wonderous Place") whenever I want to listen to some goose-bump inducing music without lyrics. Mark Mancina is definitely harkening back to that. That's great, because I've found the background scores for the recent Disney musicals disappointingly forgettable (aside from "Kingdom Dance" in Tangled, which is basically a musical number in itself anyway, just without lyrics). I just love bombastic, melodic scores that exist to enhance scenes rather than scores that exist to only fade into the background.

Also, this post has lead me to rewatch the Kingdom Dance scene in Tangled and...wow. CGI animation really has improved so much in 6 years. I'm not saying that Tangled currently looks bad or anything, quite the contrary, but you can definitely tell that Disney has made many strides in character animation and rendering since then. That has never been so apparent to me until I've watched Moana footage and Tangled footage back-to-back (especially comparing Moana's background characters to Tangled's.)
