The music reminded me a bit of Tarzan, which is logical given that it's by the same composer, but I liked it. The backgrounds in the clip are also beautiful.disneyprincess11 wrote:A really sweet clip with Moana and her grandmother!

Eh.. not happy about this clip.
I think she's really inexperienced when it comes voice acting, not her fault, but it really shows in this clip. It sounds like they just did a quick patch up job instead of having her voice the character naturally.
Also, I'm getting some MAJOR Rapunzel vibes from Moana in this clip. Not only does she start talking like her, but even the way that she acts. Like when she said "Is there something you wanna tell me", that totally seemed like Rapunzel. and she kind of looked like her too.. haha
I hope the actual movie proves me wrong.

Re: Moana
I thought I was the only one who felt that. When I first heard the Moana version/clip of "How Far I'll Go," I got major Mandy-as-Rapunzel vibes (which isn't a bad thing, since I heart Mandy Moore, but I thought that so soon after Rapunzel comes a sound alike...but people compare Anna and Rapunzel, too...). But it's not like Auli'i sounds like Mandy all the time or anything.taei wrote:Also, I'm getting some MAJOR Rapunzel vibes from Moana in this clip. Loved the clip with Gramma Tala and the music. She's definitively one of those "fun-Grandma" roles and certainly reminds me of the Grandma's in the 90's.
Reading the books, I was suprised that she dies late in the film. For some reason I had the indication that she would die earlier in the film.

Re: Moana
I think that's because they're probably using a modified rig of Rapunzel. They also have a lot of stock expressions and poses in their CG 'bank' by now which may be tweaked and reused, making the acting feel similar. CG animators animate on all of the characters so it's definitely not an acting style of a particular animator. Unlike in the 2D days, there aren't supervising animators anymore who are assigned to a specific character.taei wrote:Also, I'm getting some MAJOR Rapunzel vibes from Moana in this clip. Re: Moana
SURPRISE EVERYONE! I SAW MOANA!
All of you are in for a treat. Unfortunately, it is pretty much what you see in the commercials. But, it's just so fantastic and it's such a 90s movie. Moana is the main focus of the movie and she's the best Disney Princess of the Revival. She's already a leader at the very beginning of the movie and helps her people. So, Disney is already getting it. Maui is a good character. He's a huge $%^ at first with him, blocking Moana in a cave after his song, but he is still mostly likable. Mini Maui is the best part of the movie. Everyone applauded at the Twitter reference. You hardly see Hei Hei at all.
The music was good, but is basically "How Far I'll Go" over and over again (With the reprise and I am Moana.) You're Welcome was SPECTACULAR and a LOT of 2D in it. The opening was lovely by introducing the village and Moana's role. Shiny was uhhhhhhhh......uhhhhhhhh....takes time to get used to. The beginning of the song threw me off in a bad way, but gets amazing when Maui reveals himself. I mean, AMAZING. He taunts Maui about being weak and being abandoned by his parents. The sequence is amazing with the ending being a mix of the ending of Friends on the Other Side and the animation of Chesire Cat. Know Yourself is a GIANT spoiler, but is super moving. I liked Frozen's music much better tbh.
So, MAJOR SPOILERS:
They do explain the powers-Moana gets the powers by saving a baby turtle from hungry birds
Maui's powers-His parents threw him in the ocean seconds after birth, but the gods save him. He is given the fish hook, which is the source of the magic. After the second battle with the Lava god, SHE cracks Maui's hook, prompting him to run off and abandon Moana. He returns to help Moana in the climax and gets it destroyed. He's cool about it, but gets it back after the heart is restored
Sorry, guys: There IS a twist villain. Ugh.-The Lava God is the Mother Nature Goddess that build the Earth
The reason why Moana's dad doesn't want anyone to leave the island-When he was Moana's age, he and his best friend was caught in a storm and his best friend drowned
Speaking of which-Moana herself almost drowns. When she goes in the ocean for the first time, the waves pull her in and her foot gets stuck in a rock
And how her and the water are friends-First: Whoever has the heart controls the ocean. And second, the ocean IS the spirit of the grandmother

Re: Moana
That's so cool disneyprincess11! Honestly, it hasn't really hit me yet that there are only three weeks left until the official release.
About the music, that definitely sounds like Lin-Manuel Miranda. If he nails a melody and/or a line, he'll be sure to reuse it sometime later in the story...often more than once. Personally, I felt that Frozen's music sounded somewhat disjointed compared to a typical Broadway production or 90s Disney musical because there were no real themes or motifs that connected the songs aside from the reprise of "For the First Time in Forever", so Moana's soundtrack may actually be an improvement for me. It's a preference thing.
Also, about the villain spoilers:
Pele sounds a lot more like a tragically misunderstood antagonist than a "twist villain" in the vein of Hans or Bellwether. Granted, she is based on an actual mythological goddess, so Disney probably wouldn't have wanted to paint her as truly evil anyway. Unless, of course, by "twist villain" you mean that someone else besides Pele is the main villain. That wouldn't be surprising.

@DisneyPrincess11
did you really have to say that there was a twist villain? I mean you could have just said Villain - It's a twist!instead!
Now I won't be as shocked when they reveal who it was.
Sorry for being kinda mean, but I just really didn't want to know that.

^What? No, you are totally fine. But, wouldn't that mean the same thing?
Re: Moana
Nah, cause people would assume you're saying something specific about the Lava thingy.disneyprincess11 wrote:^What? No, you are totally fine. But, wouldn't that mean the same thing?
I am so excited for this movie.
I've been studying abroad in the US for a while and I finally returned home, but all of the disney animated movies that come out in November in the US are delayed till mid-December in the middle east. But I just found out that Moana is coming out at the same time as in the US!!!! I am super excited!
I remember being frustrated that Brave came out like 2 months late here.
But what did you think of the movie overall? Like, is it worth the hype? and Which is better and is more likely to win at the oscars, Moana or Zootopia?
Lastly... Should I cancel my soundtrack pre-order or was the score at least good?

Re: Moana
If you don't mind my asking, I have a couple of questions.
How do the songs compare to other movies of this decade? Like are they worse than Frozen but better than Tangled?
And what about the score especially compared to previous Musker and Clements movies like Aladdin and The Little Mermaid?
How does the grandmother being the spirit of the ocean work? I mean the ocean has always been around but the grandmother just dies so does her spirit become part of the ocean? Is it just her or is this a belief Moana's people have? And also is this why the ocean likes Moana, especially since you said it nearly drowns her in the beginning?
Does the lava goddess ever look like how she does in the concept art? I preferred that look over her trailer look. Also, just to be clear, there isn't a twist villain in the movie. The lava goddess just happens to be the good nature goddess who gets corrupted somehow and turns good again at the end of the film, right. Also how does she compare to other villains, both the ones from this decade and the classic ones?

Re: Moana
Sorry for the lateness!
I can't answer right now if I liked Moana or Zootopia better. As for the Oscars, it's definitely Disney to beat. Zootopia does have different messages from Disney about racism, judgement, and dreams. But, Moana is very classical Disney. The race is interesting, but I think it might be Moana.
Definitely keep the soundtrack. "Shiny" is the only mediocre song (I need time to warm up to it. The song itself threw me off guard.)
2. The score captures the Islands perfectly and it's incredibly stunning. Hoping this gets nominated (and possibly win!)
3. If you watch the Grandma clip, she says she wants to incarnate as a stingray. Immediately after she dies, her spirit becomes a ray and joins Moana. This is the very end of How Far I'll Go Reprise and it's incredible. So, her spirit follows her the whole time. She reveals herself in I Am Moana. In the finale, she becomes a real stingray. That's part of the reason why the ocean likes Moana. But, without the heart, the ocean is dangerous to her, like why she almost drowns.
4. Unfortunately, the lava goddess looks like the way she does in the trailers, NOT the art. I think she's one of the strongest Disney villains, being a total threat to our heroes and being purely evil though the evilness isn't its fault.
I really loved the movie. My only beefs are only a COUPLE of the lines can be too Dreamworks ("Fishes pee in you!") or too much on the nose with Disney ("If you sing, I'll throw up" and "Let me introduce myself....in song form!") and the fact if they could do the road trip better. The monsters in the underworld are literally 30 seconds long and the pirates & the crab are in one scene each and that's it. But, what makes up for is that for the rest of the time, Moana and Maui get to know each other, discover themselves etc. It's definitely worth the hype. It's just so beautiful, animation-wise, character development-wise, culturally-wise etc.!taei wrote:But what did you think of the movie overall?
