Fortunately the Kakamora coconuts weren't that grating in that clip (which I hope they'll not be in the movie either).

Re: Moana
This inspired me to look up the release date of the Art of Moana book on Amazon, and I'm not finding it...?!

Re: Moana
it is when they replace more needed things in the film like important plot elements and character scenes(more integral to the story) due to lack of time.The_Iceflash wrote:I think some people need to get over their allergy/phobia/irrational hatred of comedic side kicks. If someone is going to let that pull a film down that's your problem and not the film's. We got to stop acting like they're inherently a bad thing.
I liked Hei Hei's original design better. Now he has ping pong balls for eyes. Reminds me of Scrat.

Re: Moana
That can not be Alan Tudyk as Hei Hei. Those noises sound too realistic. If that is Alan Tudyk, all of my props to him.
Re: Moana
I also prefer Hei Hei's original design. I read someone comment somewhere that he looks like Becky, the bird from Finding Dory and it's true. As for the sounds he makes, maybe they use a combination of Alan Tudyk's voice and real roosters or they manipulate his voice to sound that way, though it can also be him who makes all those noises.

Re: Moana
I really love Moana's design so far. She doesn't look as bad there as other pre-film clip-art in the past have looked, probably because she's just smiling instead of smirking. (I imagine they'll have several Funko Pop for the film's release, and I'll definitely be getting Moana herself, I know.)
Maui looks okay in that pose. I might have forgot to say it, but I'm looking forward to his transformations throughout the film. Maybe the designs for those will be better than the main one.
As far as comments about the sidekicks, I don't really mind any of them, tbh. The TrT joke about the coconut pirates was, well, just that--a joke. They look cute enough, and so does the pig/rooster. Even the giant crab other people disliked will probably look okay in movement, imo. My only real problem is that the majority of these characters likely only exist for the sake of the roadtrip narrative structure. I doubt they play much role in the overall story.

I definitively share your fondness for her design. It's certainly the best design of the CGI Princesses of this era. She looks like a Mark Hehn-drawing transfered to CGI.

I'm not really bothered by the side characters so far especially because Musker and Clements films tend to have a wide variety of them and they're almost all memorable. I love my Flounder, Sebastian, Scuttle, Abu, Carpet, Iago, Rajah, etc. so I'm sure I'll love these new characters too. The only sidekicks so far that I've found to be duds are those from Princess and the Frog.

Oh, come on, JeanGrey. How dare you? I thought Louis, Ray and Charlotte were a ton of fun.

Re: Moana
I somewhat agree. They weren't that terrible within the movie, but they weren't endearing enough to carry it. I feared they would be grating. At least Charlotte was somewhat fun at times.JeanGreyForever wrote:I'm not really bothered by the side characters so far especially because Musker and Clements films tend to have a wide variety of them and they're almost all memorable. At least Flounder and Scuttle are endearing and memorable. And frankly I rank them over Sebastian, who gets all the attention.

Re: Moana
I loved both Charlotte and Ray. Charlotte is a new type of sidekick. She's actually a human and she's spoiled, but sweet. Ray was a strong sidekick who actually had a purpose in the road trip and a good arc. It's just stupid that they killed Ray off. Louis isn't bad, but he wasn't necessary and was just there.

Re: Moana
Well, JeanGrey, Louis did help Tiana and Naveen get on their way to Mama Odie (despite going the wrong way), he played Cupid with Ray to help Tiana and Naveen fall in love (Ma Belle Evangeline), he got them a ride back to New Orleans on a riverboat, he even blew his own cover to help Ray when he was being chased by the shadows...
Oh, and did I mention he helps "persuade" the Fenner Bros to sell the restaurant to Tiana?
So he's not really "just there". Plus, he represents people with supposedly impossible dreams.
