I was thinking it would be really cool to see movie going sales for the Disney Classics with one column for actual movie watching sales, one adjusted for inflation, one for actual money Disney spent on making the production, and one adjusted for inflation. I think it will put things into perspective, like which classics became instant classics, which ones became classics over time, which ones were big hits but didn't last, and which ones just flopped and died (Sword in the Stone most probably). It'll also put the current dark age into perspective as compared to the one Disney had in the early 80's and the Golden Age in the 90's.
I like the idea, but it should include both home video sales and box office grosses (including the re-releases). BUt, I do think this should be ona new separate page, not like, added to the Animated Classics DVD page.Luke wrote:By "sales", do you mean home video sales? Or are you talking about box office grosses?

I agree with Paul. Great idea. As for home video, DVD would be the most important, but VHS might be cool to see too, esp for those that haven't yet been released to DVD.
Maybe something like this:
Movie Title - Production/Marketing Cost - Theatrical BO Gross (Initial) - Theatrical BO Gross (Total with rereleases) - Platinum Edition (ex.) DVD Cost - Platinum Edition DVD Sales/Gross
But then what about something like The Jungle Book- multiple releases on VHS and DVD, that might become a little bit bulky.

It's a cool idea.
Lots of work for Luke!
ideally, these things if you reeeeally want to be accurate, not only should they be adjusted year by year for inflation, BUT, and this is a most difficult part, adjusted year by year by population % too. (So if Fantasia sold (made up numbers) one million in 1940 in the US and the US population was 100 million then . and now is 300 million, the million the movie sold, counts as 3 million today. (and then adjusted for monetary inflation
)
Even a task deathie mouse wouldnt wanna!

Yeah, it could become quite time consuming. Luke, if you decide this is something you'd like to add, then I'm sure several of us site members could help out where needed. Also, BoxOfficeMojo.com has done a lot of the number crunching for some of these already.

Agreed, there is little point in adding information someone else already does very well. Luke staked out his territory with a complete list of Disney movies and did it a very good job before anyone else did. Better to keep doing a good job at what he already does than spread himself too thin by trying to do everything.

Well I do think it's a cool idea. I don't think anyone tracks the sales figures of the DVDs like BOM does for movies, do they?

Thanks, JJJ. It seems you have to be a member for that top link. The other two look like great resources, but I don't see anywhere to search for a particular movie. For example, let's say I wanted to find out what the sales stats for the Snow White PE were. Maybe I'm just not seeing it.

I haven't visited those links (lazy
), but do they (or in any other place) give the box office receipts for each year, (and separate video sales too) in number of units/tickets sold in the US (and worldwide)? (deathie likes to be an international and cosmopolite mouse
)
If there's a list of box office receips by NUMBER of tickets sold by year, that one eliminates the inflation variable, but not the population variable. But then all you need is a world almanac with population numbers by year to start computing.
And I think a list made like that would be unique, cus I don't think the population% numbers are taken into account when any place mentions the adjusted by inflation grosses. Are they?
Maybe some saavy computer programer could whip an online calculator. And then, we would know how popular a movie truly was compared with today's blockbusters. Then if movie X from the year XXXX seen by X people (or actually sold X tickets) when there were XX million people which meant that 1 of 3 people alive bought a ticket, while movie Y from the year YYYY sold twice the number of tickets when YY million people were around, so in actuallity only 1 in 4 people alive bought tickets, would make X a bigger hit among the living than inflation adjusted box office mulah numbers would indicate
That way i can REALLY know how Fantasia ranks besides Shrek. The true meaning of life.
