Now that he’s successfully made his big-screen debut in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Tom Holland’s Spider-Man can get down to the business of crimefighting in his own, solo Spidey movie. Spider-Man: Homecoming is gearing up for a summertime shoot in Atlanta, and casting new has been trickling down the Hollywood pipeline Today, another new and seemingly important character has been added to Peter Parker’s growing posse. Here’s what we have heard.

Michael Barbieri, a 14-year-old actor who was seen earlier this year in the Sundance film Little Men, has been cast as a part of Spider-Man: Homecoming. Heroic Hollywood broke the news, noting that Barbieri auditioned for Peter Parker, and now will play one of Peter’s best friends.

Donald Glover is in talks to join the cast of Spider-Man: Homecoming.

Homecoming is Sony’s reboot of its Spider-Man franchise, which it has partnered with Marvel to produce, and the movie is due to begin production later this month.

Interesting casting of Donald Glover considering some fans wanted him to play Spider-Man way back when. It's also kinda interesting that they're keeping the role secret for now.... I wonder if there is any chance that it'll be some variation on Miles Morales? You'd think they'd want to save the character to use as a replacement for Spider-Man down the line, but this wouldn't be the first time that they'd take huge liberties with the source material.

Sony’s first Spider-Man film series petered out after the disappointing Spider-Man 3, and their second ended after The Amazing Spider-Man 2 was met with total indifference. But the property finally got the boost he needed when the studio struck a deal to bring the webslinger into the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Spider-Man’s cameo was one of the most buzzed-about moments in Captain America: Civil War, and successfully drummed up excitement for his solo movie Spider-Man: Homecoming, due out next summer.

Naturally, Sony doesn’t plan to stop there. In a recent interview, studio chief Tom Rothman confirmed plans for an entire Spider-Man universe. And while he’s staying quiet about what exactly those plans might look like, a new rumor says a Silver Sable movie could be among them.

Correction, Sam Raimi's Spider-Man series didn't die off becuase of Spider-Man 3. Despite some negative fan reactions, that film still made a boat load of money. In fact more than either of the Not So Amazing Spider-Jerk's films after. As a matter of fact, Raimi was working on Spider-Man 4 and Maguire and Dunst were ready to go. What killed the project off was Sony's insistence that it be ready by summer of 2011. Raimi didn't feel he could do a quality film fast enough, so he walked away. What I still don't understand to this day about that was why Sony couldn't have just let him push it back a year since their dumb reboot came out a year later anyway.

Further, the whole Spider-verse crap was originally connected to the first reboot films. Apparently Sony hasn't learned their lesson and these movies outside of Spider-Man Homecoming and it's sequels have zero to do with the MCU. Actually, it sounds like Sony is going to try and blackmail Marvel.

Did they? On paper, I'd say Donald Glover would've been perfect casting for a new Spider Man. I've always loved him (and he's gorgeous).

I'm glad they left the last Spider Man series behind. I hated it outside of Sally Field as the aunt (really wish she'd been a part of the other series with Dunst, Franco, and Maguire). I guess I need to check out Captain America: Civil War now. I never cared about CA, so didn't know there was a Spider Man cameo introducing this new adaptation until just now. I hope it won't be as bad as TASM.

I disliked TASM series immensely, and I think having another Spider-Man reboot so soon after the last one can only hurt the brand, regardless of Marvel Studios' input.

What should have been done instead, IMO, was to reintroduce Maguire, Dunst, and other Raimi-verse cast members in the MCU. It would have given us the sense of familiarity, positivity (Raimi's Spider-Man films are arguably the public's preferred adaptation and Spider-Man 2 is still in the top 5 comic book films), not another origin story and an actual Spider-Man, not Spider-Kid. Both a continuation of old Spider-Man films and a soft reboot, with cast that is close in age to the rest of the MCU's cast. But oh well...

I just can't get excited about this movie. The trailers don't impress me at all, especially with overuse of RDJ's Tony Stark (the posters aren't any better) and the teen/high school angle. I disliked TASM series immensely, and I think having another Spider-Man reboot so soon after the last one can only hurt the brand, regardless of Marvel Studios' input.

Yes, it could have been retrofitted for MCU quite nicely, without any continuity issues. The ten year break between Spider-Man 3 and Civil War could have been explained by Peter taking a break from crimefighting after the events of the trilogy. It could have even referenced the actual Civil War storyline with an already established Spider-Man revealing his identity. I feel that with Homecoming we'll be treading much of the same ground, only with less likeable cast and too much reliance on humor (something Marvel Studios can't really balance well with heavier themes, which kind of spoiled my enjoyment of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2).

Agreed. Right up to the point that Tom Holland's Spider-Man hit the screen, I feel that Maguire's Spider-Man could have been added to the MCU. The thing about it is too that while I'm not a Mile Morales fan, since I figure Marvel is going to want to add him at some point anyway, having an established adult Spider-Man/Peter Parker could have made such an addition much easier to do. Now whatever they do I imagine will feel rushed. It would have been fun to do one more Maguire trilogy film planted in the MCU, add his appearance in a handful of other MCU films and then pass it off to the kid. Oh well...

Oh wow, good call about the introduction of Miles Morales. That 'passing-the-mantle' idea would have been absolutely perfect, and it would have felt like a natural progression. Such a wasted opportunity.

Well—I might give it a pity watch like the Power Rangers movie (to see how would do as Rita). The main actor seems decent--I just don't think of Spiderman as being so young. But maybe I'm wrong on that. And I didn't realize the "Homecoming" part of the title was referring to something High School-related. Gag me now. I guess Iron Man is involved in the storyline?
