Fun and Fancy Free
I am thinking about buying this DVD, but realise the Mickey and the Beanstalk section will be on the Mickey Mouse in LC2 Treasure DVD 'supposedly' being released in May...
I would like to know if the 'Bongo' section is worth the price of this DVD or not, seeing as I will get the above Treasures DVD ?.. I have seen Bongo before, but it has been a long time.

Yes it is. Very fun short. And even if it wasn't, owning Fun and Famcy Free as a whole is worth it because it's one of the 44 Animated Classics and owning it is nessesary to have the complete collection. Plus, the SRP is just $19.99.
And the Treasures set IS being released in May, not 'supposedly.' I'm assming you said 'supposedly' because you think it will be delayed again. I doubt it. And remember, innocent until proven guilty.

I think the "Bongo" short is OK. It's definateley different from any other Disney short and has a "Dumbo"-like charm about it. It has no talking and is narrated by Dinah Shore. The best part about "Fun and Fancy Free" for me is the in between segments with Jiminy Crickett and several famous Hollywood stars from this era. It's a great piece of Nastalgia and is definately worth owning. and as Jake Lipson said:

I actually really enjoy the "Bongo" segment. It was orginally intended as a feature follow-up to Dumbo, from my understanding, and is a cute little love story involving a circus bear trying to find his place in the world.
I know certain members of the forum think Bongo is the devil (*cough*2099net*cough*), or find the segment silly - and I can kind of undestand that point of view. However, I'm too much of a romantic to have anything but nice things to say about this segment.
Personally, I would buy it for completeness sake, but I'm anal. I think it is a nice "package", with Jiminy Cricket providing the linking segments. The latter is something you probably won't see on any other compilation.

I mantain mixed feelings about "Fun And Fancy Free". Once, it used to be one of my least favorite Disney features. Now, it's not near my favorites, but it also isn't one of my LEAST favorites (yes, I like them all
).
It's a very charming film that is really well done. And most of its charm is from the fact that the movie feels dated nowadays - usually this is a bad thing, but in this case (as with "Melody Time" and "Oliver & Company"), it isn't.
Besides, the DVD has a wonderful and super-informative making of featurette, and the movie is in very good shape as well.

I really like the Bongo short on this one, as much as I like the "Mickey and the Beanstalk" sequence. "Bongo" is narrateded with songs by Dinah Shore, and she did a great job with it - it is definitely a great cartoon to watch with your sweetheart for Valentines Day which is coming up. An added plus for "Fun and Fancy Free" is that if you like Jiminy Cricket, it has him in the framing sequences along w/ Bergen and Charlie McCarthy, and Jiminy sings a song that I believe was cut from "Pinocchio." Check it out, if you like Disney, you'll like "Bongo."

Re: Fun and Fancy Free
As many may have noted, Fun & Fancy Free was released on Blu-ray in 2014. As I own both the Gold Collection DVD (2000) and the UK version of the BD, I created a small comparison with screenshots.
Again, I’m unable to post the comparison here because the images are slightly too wide, but here’s a link to it: http://www.dvdplaza.fi/forum/threads/74846/page-19#post-1630114. Click on the “Spoiler” to view the images and click on the BD images to see them in full resolution.

I have never seen Fun & Fancy Free, or any of the package films for that matter, except Melody Time, which I have on DVD. Are they any good? Cause if they are, I'd rather wiat for them all to be released on Blu-ray, and get them with a superior picture quality.

Re: Fun and Fancy Free
ehh, the package films can be a mixed bag...pluses and minuses. "Melody Time and Make Mine Music" are the "poor man's" Fantasia. Instead of classical music, they are intertwined with popular music of the era, famous orchestral pieces and inventive perceptions of well known musical works. The animation can be lackluster at times, but, some of the package films such as "Ichabod and Mr. Toad" contain a lot of the style we would come to see in "Cinderella", "Lady and the Tramp" and "Alice in Wonderland"..due to the stylization of Mary Blair. Ward Kimball and Hamilton Luske worked on several of the package films and their influence is very noticeable, esp. Kimball during the Pecos Bill number. I would like to see these films released on blu-ray, just for completion to my Disney library. There have been no concrete plans or hints as to when we could possibly see releases for "Melody Time", "Make Mine Music" or the two South American films.
Re: Fun and Fancy Free
I would recommend at least, Fun and Fancy Free and The Adventures of Ichabod and Mr. Toad. Those two are the best from the package films in my opinion. They have longer and more interesting stories. The others are a mixed bag as justcuttinhair said. Some shorts inside the films are quite good, but there are other parts that can be a bit boring. I like those films too, but I don’t watch them as frequently as other Disney classics.
And speaking about that, I recently bought the Blu-ray combo of the two films I first mentioned from Amazon UK. And I think that edition is a good opportunity to someone who doesn’t have them yet. Firstly, there are two films in one, well, actually three, because thought it isn’t announced on the case it includes the 1941 Disney film The Reluctant Dragon. Secondly, they are in Blu-ray, and thirdly, the price is quite low compared to the US edition and considering it has three films.
Here’s the Blu-ray combo I’m talking about:

I think it’s the same disc as in the American edition. It has the same contents and the same languages. The only differences are that this one is region free instead of region 1 and it doesn’t include the DVD.

Re: Fun and Fancy Free
The Blu-ray discs are fully identical, and both are region-free (ABC), as is testified by DVDCompare.net. The DVDs are Region 1 — but who needs them?D82 wrote:I think it’s the same disc as in the American edition. It has the same contents and the same languages. Ok, then it's exactly the same disc. Yes, the DVD is not so important anymore.marlan wrote:The Blu-ray discs are fully identical, and both are region-free (ABC), as is testified by DVDCompare.net. The DVDs are Region 1 — but who needs them?
