Well done everybody ! So very well deserved. Though yes, it is sad that so much worth is measured by financial success with Disney; I look at it as a massive positive so that the movie won't be forgotten by Disney.

Brilliant news

Fantasia 2000 $90.9 million
Dinosaur $349.8 million
The Emperor's New Groove $169.3 million
Atlantis: The Lost Empire $186.1 million
Lilo & Stitch $273.1 million
Treasure Planet $109.6 million
Brother Bear $250.4 million
Home on the Range $104.0 million
Chicken Little $314.4 million
Meet the Robinsons $169.3 million
Bolt $310.0 million
The Princess and the Frog $267.0 million

These are the worldwide grosses of ALL of WDAS features from the 2000s. Dinosaur was the highest at just under $350 million. My, how times have change at WDAS.

Pretty much, yes. This is the first time in years I felt the quality of a Disney movie was properly, proportionately rewarded at the box office. Congratulations to the filmmaking team!

The last hurtle Zootopia needs to complete, lets just hope the Academy doesn't give it to Pixar again.

It's almost a guarantee that it's gonna win the Oscar. It's the most critically acclaimed animated movie since "Toy Story 3." Plus the competition doesn't look as strong going forward, even though some the movies look pretty good.

Well, I wouldn't be so sure. As of right now yes it is, but there is another that in my view a bigger hurtle than any of the pixar films released this year.

Yes, the newest Disney Princess film Moana.

^This will be so much pressure for Moana. I mean, no matter if Zootopia is great or not, Disney will want its next franchise get the billion of dollars and the trophies, not some animal movie "that got lucky" (sarcasm)

Well, this is great. I thought it would do it this weekend (just gone). I originally thought it might be able to get about $1.07 billion worldwide, but realistically it will more than likely be $1.04 billion give or take. It should continue to have good legs. It certainly is an amazing accomplishment.

Moana will probably open in Japan next year, just like they've been doing with most of the recent Disney animation, so we may have to wait until then for the possible billion dollar mark.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Numbers have been updated for the weekend and they are:

$1,000,683,405 Worldwide (Domestic $337,183,405 / International $663,500,000)

Japan: ~$56 Million - According to the Box Office Theory Forum, so over $7.5 million, which would be up from last week if these numbers are correct. It was number two for the weekend behind Deadpool.

Edit: Should have written for the weekend, instead of the week, because Monday to Sunday Zootopia ($7.65 million) would still be number one over Deadpool ($6.6 million) based on Box Office Theory forum's numbers.

Japanese numbers by week (based on Box Office Mojo's Numbers and the last one from the Box Office Theory forum*):
$3,988,949
$9,542,892
$14,365,065
$6,438,946
$6,986,700
$7,028,673
$7,648,775*

Unbelievable that this little film that could, crossed the rare billion dollar mark. Considering its competition, that makes it more remarkable.

And poor Batman and Superman, 2 of the most iconic characters in pop culture, to be outdone by a fox and rabbit at the box office.

It’s fantastic that Zootopia has reached the billion dollar mark! Who would have thought before its release that it would be so successful! It’s only the second Disney animation film to cross that mark and the fourth animated film ever to do so, joining Frozen, Minions and Toy Story 3. It’s also the 11th Disney film to hit that milestone and the 26th of all films. And there’s even more. Zootopia is the second highest-grossing film to be based on an original story after Avatar, and WDAS is now the first animation studio to have two films that have reached the billion-dollar mark.

I’m very glad Zootopia has achieved all of that, it really deserves it. And it has demonstrated that princess films are not the only Disney films that can reach that level of success.

Not to mention it's a story with a female protagonist, who is a not soon to be Disney Princess. It might encourage Disney to do more non-princess heroines in the future. Although it would be fun if Judy would be made a honorary princess, like they did with Mulan. I do wonder if Moana or Judy is going to be the Mulan of this generation.

So the numbers are in for Japan through Box Office Mojo and the total so far is $56,670,672, which means for the week Zootopia made $8,319,447 ($3,292,414 for the weekend). Monday (30 May) a lot of children/teenagers were off apparently due to sports in the weekend.

April 23-24 $3,988,949 (2 days)
April 25-01 $9,542,892
May 02-08 $14,365,065
May 09-15 $6,438,946
May 16-22 $6,986,700
May 23-29 $7,028,673
May 30-05 $8,319,447

It will be interesting to see how this weeks numbers compare.

Edit: Zootopia is now the number one movie of 2016 in Japan, just edging out the Detective Conan movie (series also known as Case Closed).

That's great! I remember that though the opening weekend of Zootopia in Japan was good, it didn't even finish at first place, but I knew word of mouth would work for the film there.

Here are some articles that have appeared, now that the film has been released on Blu-ray:

Have you seen this video about the attractions of the deleted concept of Wild Times? As they said in the video, since it was Nick doing all the funding it was really a low budget thing. However, it's purpose was to relieve predators from their oppressive environment. I really love how much detail, and care they put into thinking about this movie. And even though Wild Times was scrapped, it really does sound like a fun idea.

There was the first trailer from "Finding Dory" (sleep-swimming), a promo for "Girl Meets World" and the standard promos for DMR and DMA.

What was the "Let It Go" joke?
