Hand-Drawn Animation Dead at Disney

So... Last night, my youngest brother and I watched Oliver & Company (which I think is a favorite of his, by the way) last night. As we were watching the movie, he commented out of the blue that he wishes there were more hand-drawn animated movies.

I agree with your brother, DisneyJedi. It's such a pity that hand drawn animation is not popular anymore.

I wonder if Disney would decide to do an animated short featuring characters from their recent hits (i.e Tangled, Frozen, Wreck it Ralph or Big Hero 6), would they be successful, if they were hand drawn, instead of CG?

well keep in mind the creators of Klaus and Hullabaloo are doing things the hard way(gasp!) which means it will take longer. But Im ok with waiting.

An impressive new hand-drawn animated feature is getting released in China on July 8th called "Big Fish and Begonia". It was animated by Studio Mir known for their work on The Legend of Korra. You can watch the trailer, here. A music video has been released as well. It looks really cool. It's a shame Chinese animation almost never makes it to the U.S.

The poster alone looks absolutely gorgeous. I haven't seen all of The Legend of Korra (still need to get around to that), but it was a very beautiful show outside of the 3D graphics occasionally inserted.

A 2D animator single-handedly animated a hand-drawn feature on his own called "Nova Seed" which premiered on April 23rd at the Toronto Animation Arts Festival International. You can watch the trailer, here.

The director, Nick DiLiberto talks about why he went with 2D animation for his film and what the art form means to him.

The crazy thing is that DiLiberto wanted to do it all in "2D" hand-drawn animation, an art almost lost in North America (to computerization), but still in vogue in Japan. It's difficult for DiLiberto to explain why, but he is a total 2D devotee. It all comes down to inspiration, he says. Hand-drawn art inspires him. Computer art doesn't.

"When I watch something that was hand animated, I feel like drawing afterwards," he says on the phone from his apartment in Fukuoka. "I can see that it is art. With a lot of the newer stuff, as inspiring and beautiful as it looks, I don't physically feel like drawing the character afterwards. I find it harder to get inspiration from."

I have this idea. I want to make a film set in the Amazon forest. But it’s not a Brazilian story, it’s a universal one. Everybody can understand it, it just happens to be set in the Amazon. It has mystery and magic. I’m animating this one-minute teaser with the characters animated, a little sequence with the logo and names, so people can look at it and say “I want to see this”. I’m developing this and trying to see if I can get it financed to do a feature film.

I think I saw an article about Big Fish and Begonia at The AV Club a while back. It does indeed look great; I don't think I had seen the posters yet, but those look gorgeous.

There have been occasional R-rated animated films. Things like Heavy Metal and TV adaptations like Beavis and Butthead and South Park. I'm not sure if any of Bill Plympton's films are rated, but I'm sure a few of them would be R if they were. Plus, a lot more if you count imports--many popular anime titles and even an Oscar-nominated film like Waltz with Bashir.

However, as for the "2-D animation is dead at the big studios," I'd have to counter that with a big "for now." Keep in mind that originally, Walt Disney's productions were "indie projects." One of those "indie projects" of the future could catch on and start something. As I've been taking film classes at school, something that has been very clear to me is that Hollywood is constantly in a state of trends and that at some point future "powers that be" bring back old trends or at least aspects of old trends, repackages them and tried to pass them off as "new."

At some point, I would not be surprised if 2-D makes a comeback.

But how would it be possible for an indie animated project to really make 2D animation relevant again to the point that studios will take notice? At this point it looks next to impossible.
