Re: “Descendants” Disney Channel movie to star Disney Villai
I enjoyed this movie.
Some of you are asking a lot of questions that are answered in the prequel book "The Isle of the Lost", which I recommend.
The movie has a lot of details, cool choreographies, great music, a good story and having Kenny Ortega as a director you can’t expect any less.
The story captivated me and really helped me a lot to have read the prequel book to understand and love all the characters from the beginning.

Re: “Descendants” Disney Channel movie to star Disney Villai
100% my thoughts exactly, taei!
1. Any kids of the Disney Princesses would not be like this. I was at first fine, with Aurora's daughter, being a little snobby. Then, she got into the typical Disney Channel cheerleader during that painful song from Ben. "OMG, NO! AHHHHHHHHH! I'm going out with Cinderella's son now!" And then, Cinderella's son, being the typical football quarterback who uses girls? Obnoxious. And how is the daughter of Mulan, the tomboyish hero of China, this peppy, girly girl?
2. What have they done to the Disney villains is downright pandering. Jafar is unrecognizable with his weird, racist and fat body figure. Cruella is the stereotypical crazy, black woman (I don't care for Cruella, so w/e). The Evil Queen is really weird with botox and saying this like "BITTER PARTY OF ONE!" Maleficent was just...oh gosh, painful to watch! She's one of the best Disney villains because how she uses her evil. You can't mess with her (she cursed a baby, crying outloud), but she's so graceful and elegant in demur. Watching her being a perky, prancing, snorting, Fosse-dancing god-knows-what whose idea of revenge is picking people's noses with wands and removing people's glasses just shows how little Disney today cares about Walt's legacy. And yeah, taei: Disney is really ruining what's so special about her.
3. The only decent villain kids are Mal and Carlos. Mal is actually an interesting character. I believe her general evilness and I love how she takes it seriously. When she transform to a good person, I believe it. Carlos was….alright. He wasn’t bad, but he was forgettable. But, the problem is how undeveloped all of the kids are. Not only by character, but by journey. Yes, Carlos loves dogs now. Jay becomes a MVP at the lacrosse game. Evie finds love with Dopey’s son (that’s actually really cute, TBH) and finds her place with makeup, and Mal finds love with the Belle/“Beast” guy. But, there is no moment when they stop and think, “Oh, that was a good thing I did. Oh, hey being nice is nice.” They just become good, out of nowhere.
Jay is a boring, pretty boy who flips his hair and come on, the Evil Queen's daughter, being yet ANOTHER girly girl who wants to be a fashion designer?
Along with that, Mal’s motives with Ben are confusing. She wants him to be in love with her, so Mal bakes cookies of him to be in love with her. During the whole time, she insists to Evie that she doesn’t like him. The cookies works, but when he loves her, she starts to feel bad that she doesn’t feel like what love is like and then bakes brownies to undo the curse and cries during it. Like what are your true feelings about this?
5. Not only is it technically uncreative. It's uncreative, in general. There is NO imagination to this, at all. You look at the commercials and think, “Oh, this is going to be based on Disney, who has given us the greatest stories, music, characters etc. And this is going to be at a Disney high school. Surely, there will be Disney references, along with really, cool Disney classes, right?” NOPE. NOT AT ALL. These characters that you see here are LITERALLY the only characters that are referenced throughout the movie. Surely, there are Disney references in the background characters? NOPE. NO ONE AT ALL. I looked carefully. I think I saw “daughters” of Pocahontas and Tiana during that horrible version of Be Our Guest. Other than that, NOTHING. All of the students blend in and dress like normal high schoolers. As for classes, you really only see two: Physics and How to Be a Good Person, which was not creative at all. Quiz questions don’t count as classes. Really, writers. This is a Disney-themed school. Have fun with it. Have really cool classes like princess training, hero PE classes, book reading with Belle and Beast (THEY EVEN DIDN’T GIVE THE POOR GUY A NAME), and magic. I see Disney fan art, doing a much better job with Disney schools than this!

All the problems that you have with this movie are solved in the prequel book. This book is really necessary to understand the movie. And all the characters are well developed in the book.
The questions about the good kids being "bad", and the Villains being different and less scary. All of those things are explained in the book: "The Isle of the Lost".

The funny thing is that I've been reading the book since early June and yeah: My problems are solved. It is SO much better than the final product we've got and this is what Descendants should have been!

Yeah, in my opinion you kind of 'need' the prequel book to better understand the characters. They are much better developed in the book.
For example, it's never really made clear in the movie that Carlos is supposed to be 'the smart one'. They hint at it a little, but mostly just focus on his relationship with the dog. In the book we discover he's actually really smart and likes to invent stuff. He's horribly treated by his mother (he's basically her servant) and doesn't even have a pillow to sleep on. He's a little insecure but becomes braver when he's with his friends.
Now, I know we don't have a lot of time in the movie to focus on that, but the lack of that information really makes it seem like he doesn't have a personality in the movie IMO.

Yea, I really liked Evie's storyline, too. And Mal's. And even Jay's, though his wasn't nearly as developed as the others. Carlos didn't feel like he had a storyline, lol. But overall it felt to me like all of the main characters' ending up becoming good felt organic.

Finished the book yesterday, and loved it! I loved the inclusion of characters we didn't see in the film. And so many that are usually ignored! The mersisters and stepsisters in particular. And I loved that Lucifer was the school mascot for the villains. Absolutely perfect. I really hope we see some of these characters in later installments, be it the shorts, sequels, more books, or dolls!

I bought a Lonnie doll the the day. For me(as a doll collector) the best thing about this whole Descendents franchise are the dolls(theyre cute.) I dont think Im gonna bother with the movie. Dont know about the shorts, maybe...if I have time or catch one on the Disney channel.

I will say that for the direction they went with the movie, a light-hearted musical, I thought it was ok and the acting choices they made for it were very good.
My biggest issue with the movie was that I felt it could have been so much more if it hadn't been a DCOM. Imagine if this had been planned as a feature film with a decent budget where they could have eliminated the whole musical style and gone for a slightly darker approach (think "Into the Woods," "Maleficent" or the recent live-action "Cinderella"). You take that kind of feel, flesh out the story and character arcs and you might have had yourself an amazing movie.
That's actually what I was sort of expecting, a DCOM in a more family friendly version of that genre. I definitely didn't expect a HSM or Teen Beach Movie style movie.

This movie and its soundtrack are a huge success!

It's only the third soundtrack from a Disney Channel Original Movie to hit #1 (along with High School Musical and High School Musical 2)

The music-driven film earned 10.5 million total viewers in its first four days, according to Disney. That makes it the fourth biggest cable TV movie since 2007, behind three other Disney Channel films: High School Musical 2 (18.2 million), Wizards of Waverly Place: The Movie (13.3 million) and Teen Beach Movie (11.9 million).

Ok, am I missing something? Is Disney ignoring its own material? I'm pretty sure the Captain Hook girl in Wicked World is Harriet, not CJ. Is CJ a middle name or someone else? They definitely said Hook's daughter was Harriet in Isle of the Lost, so this doesn't make any sense.

I was about to say isn't she a bit young to be singing this song (I know the lyrics are pretty innocent, but could be interpreted differently), then I looked up her age. Wow, I had no idea she was 20.

They actually changed the lyrics a bit.
Instead of "My body is saying let's go", she says: "my mind is saying let's go" and some other changes.
But that other part though...

Re: “Descendants” Disney Channel movie to star Disney Villai
So, Descendants is canon?

Source: http://www.laughingplace.com/w/blogs/ma ... e-la-cruz/Q: So when [Dove] got the realization that you would be playing Maleficent's daughter and [Melissa] would be writing these, how nervous were you to stray from what we know from the classics? Did you feel like there was a worry "I'm not going to be enough like Maleficent"? And even though it's Maleficent's daughter, did you [Dove] feel like you needed to pull from the Angelina Jolie movie more than the original or anything like that? And since you [Melissa] had all the characters to deal with?
Melissa de la Cruz: My concern was really to tie-in to the original movies. I wanted it to make sense, you know? And then I watched all the original movies and all the villains died! So I was like, "Why are they on this island then?!" So, I really needed to figure out what's worse than death...the Isle of the Lost.
Dove Cameron: For me, I was informed very early on (which, this is just most nerve-wracking), but I was informed by the head of Disney Channel, Gary Marsh, that the reason this project has taken so long was because Disney Corporate had to approve of somebody officially embellishing on the original stories, because that is what we're doing. Anything else, like Once Upon a Time, hasn't actually been an official embellishment on the story-
Melissa de la Cruz: Right, whereas we're canon.
Dove Cameron: We. Are. Canon. And that's why it took so long, because apparently, Disney corporate was like "That's a terrible idea, we don't want to mess with the original stuff." And so [Gary] told me that. He was like, "This is the first time that this is ever going to happen." I mean, it made me a little bit nervous, but more than anything else, but I was just like "That's the deepest honor."

How is that possible when all the villains died in the movies?
