I just found out now myself. I wasn't sure if people knew. It was casually mentioned in an article about the trailer.

I don't think they'll be as extended. I expect something much more brief than that.

Is that attitude really necessary? Its not like pixar was ever expected to produce a hand drawn feature film in the first place. On the plus side I think this would mark the first time pixar has used 2D animation for a main feature that wasn't just a credits sequence. I see that as progress.

I read some articles about the D23 presentation, but I don't remember they said anything about the 2D-animated sequences. It's an interesting choice, and any little thing in 2D is very welcomed now. It's curious how things have changed. In the 80s and early 90s the majority of films were in traditional animation and they only featured CG in some special scenes or shots. Now it's the opposite, all the films are in 3D and they use 2D only for certain things like the flashbacks here and in Kung Fu Panda or the TV program the little boy is watching in the Sanjay's Super Team short.

I wonder if they'll be similar to the scene in Fun and Fancy Free where Mortimer is trying to imagine the castle, but he can't.

I always thought that in the scene in Ratatouille where chef Gusteau appears to Remy for the first time and speaks to him from a book ilustration, Gusteau was animated in 2D, but after having chequed it, I'm not as sure. The movement of the animation there looks like CG. So I suppose you're right and Finding Dory will be the first.

Yeah, I would guess that shot you're talking about was done with cel-shaded CG.

I didn't know much about cel shading animation, but now that I've informed myself a bit about it, I think that's definitely the technique used in that scene.

While Dory was the best thing in the original, I have my doubts whether she can carry a film as the lead. Too much of good thing can become annoying and tiresome.

Though I've frequently defended "Cars 2" on this board, I think the same problem which hampered it could hamper "Dory"; By letting a deuteragonist being the lead. Many people have ranted about this. I personally thought Mater was fun and endearing in the first film and while I personally never found him grating in the sequel, he wasn't strong enough to could carry a film alone. So lets hope that it won't hamper Dory.

They did the same thing with Monsters, Inc./Monsters University as well. Makes me wonder if they want to make this their approach for all non-Toy Story sequels. But while neither Cars 2 or Monsters University were compelling or even very good films, I don't think the approach of switching the focus to the other half of the duo was necessarily the problem with either film. Mike was a strong enough character to carry his own film, and his internal conflict could have easily made for a compelling film, but it just didn't. I think the problem was largely in the execution of the idea. I think the overall concept for Finding Dory has potential. But I guess we'll see how it turns out.

Yeah, I hated both of those. MU in particular infuriated me because I'm a casual fan of MI.

I think the only thing that might hurt this film is there won't be any real stakes, like in the first film. So many animated sequels end up light, frothy, and insubstantial. I believe that's why the TS sequels worked, because 2 and 3 had stakes as big if not greater than the first film. TS4 sounds like it might be going the fluffy direction (and I worry about Frozen 2, too).

see, why couldnt the dinosaurs in Good Dinosaur look more like this? These animals are still cartoony but also still carry a sense that they studied the real animals anatomy to take inspiration from. Also is it just me or does this pic have a very painted hand drawn quality to it? is this an actual still from the film or an illustration from a storybook?

Its just a digital painting, not a still. And I disagree that it looks any more appealing than what we saw in the good dinosaur. In fact I would go the opposite way and say it doesn't feel nemo ish enough for me. But that'll probably change once we see a proper render.
