Finding Nemo is #1 on DVD and The Lion King is #1 on VHS.
As of last year, the top-selling DVD of all time was estimated to be Finding Nemo with over 40 million units sold. A sequel to that film will be released in June of 2016. Going back a generation earlier, it's a Disney cartoon that had the top-selling VHS tape of all time as well: The Lion King, with 4.5 million tapes sold on the first day of release and 30 million sold before the film went "into the Disney vault" for the first time.

I'm surprised it hasn't also managed to take the top for DVDs, too. I don't know the numbers, but don't DVDs still outsell Blu-Rays? Either way, that's wonderful.

Nice to see The Little Mermaid on the list, along with B&tB, TLK, and SW&tSD. :P Aladdin hasn't been released on Blu-Ray yet, has it?

Frozen has sold roughly 11.3 million DVDs and 7.5 million Blu-Rays in the United States. Even more impressive considering a lot just buy digitally now.

I already posted this topic on the "Frozen" board, so I guess I'm late.

Surprised to see that "Brave" sold so many editions. Though I knew it was successful, I thought most people saw it as inferior Pixar.

Kinda surprises me that "Monsters University" sold more than "The Lion King".

What I currently own. The Marvel movies are a part of the Phase 1 box set. The moment that a Phase 2 is announced is when I'll own the others. :P

I'm surprised to see Beauty and the Beast above The Lion King, but considering how well the latter's theatrical release did in comparison to the former, it makes sense. But I'm not surprised about Frozen's success. Although considering how well it's been doing in such a short amount of time, I'd be even less surprised if Guardians of the Galaxy surpasses it.

How in the world did BH6 get so high (as compared to Inside Out and Tangled)? Yuck. Must've benefitted from coming off the back of Frozen, I guess?

I'm not. Monster's University was a new film and The Lion King was not. After a VHS release and two different DVD releases, not everyone necessarily felt the need to buy the blu-day while the other had never been released before. New films normally do better on the format that exists in it's time. Should both films get re-released in 4K, don't expect Monster's University to do better there.

I'm glad it beat Tangled, but it's unfortunate that Brave is high as well.

I'm curious to see where Aladdin will end up factoring into this list after some time.

Believe it or not a lot of people actually like the movie, it has a niche genre, and it was marketed well.

My nephews (5 and 9 years old) who mainly like Minions, Star Wars, etc are obsessed with it and don't really care for any other recent Disney films. I'm sure a lot of other young boys prefer it to Frozen (and some adults happen to like the movie too).

And Big Hero 6 obviously came out on blu-ray 8 months before Inside Out so comparing them right now isn't really fair.

I don't consider it to be unfortunate. Though I've ranted about the skimpy storyline priorly, I thought Brave was all in all good enough to warrant high sales.

Yes, but MU being so high is much worse. What an awful, awful film that was, particularly as a sequel to one of their best films.

You can see how people felt about The Hobbit franchise. How the first one is so high, then the second one drops like a rock 20 places, with the third one not even charting.

So Frozen's been number 1 every year since it was released, right? No way it won't end up inducted into Disney's elite film line (Plat/Diamond/Signature/etc.). I'm shocked Zootopia is so low in comparison, considering they were around the same level in ticket sales. Well, I don't care that much about Zootopia myself, but still, surprising.

Hopefully TLM's next release will help it climb over some of these lesser films (Brave, MU, BH6); it's already gained on the former two at least. I'm happy to see Deadpool and GotG so high! Loved both of those. LotR still slaying after all these years. Interesting to see 2 Beauty and the Beast’s on this list now and neither Cinderella. No surprise about the 2015 film, but I thought the animated Cinderella was popular and it wasn't on any of these lists. Strange Bambi and Dalmatians haven't been on any of these lists either.

Zootopia was popular but it wasn't anywhere near the level of Frozen even with the box office sales. There's a reason it was dubbed Frozen Fever. Also with the shift to digital, I can see why more recent films would have less (or slightly less) sales. Even though there's really just a three year difference between the two films but digital has made huge strides in that time.

Cinderella sold poorly on Blu-Ray. There's no given reason yet but I'm guessing the main factor is that even though the film is a classic, it's been marketed so poorly since the DP franchise and alienated one-half of the genders. On top of that, this is when Disney's Diamond releases got even worse treatment. Cinderella was the first Diamond Edition to lose disc artwork. Not that most people would be turned off from the film for that, if they even realized it, but it shows the dip in quality, not to mention the same botched restoration was used again. All of these in combination could explain why the film fared so poorly, but I think it's mainly that boys were not interested in it, which automatically alienates half the market. I know Sleeping Beauty suffered similarly according to Disney Store employees.

A few of us had a discussion on the sales for Disney blu-rays a while back, and Bambi was around the middle in terms of sales for the Diamond Editions. I'd say that's pretty good for a film that isn't a DP film or the Lion King and I think only Pinocchio beat out as a non DP/Lion King film. 101 Dalmatians may have been a huge merchandise seller in the 90s, but it hasn't been one recently at all. If I remember correctly, it sold the least of the Diamond Editions.

A lot of classics and good films mixed with what I think or at least assume is a lot of crap. It's kind of weird as well as disheartening. Pinocchio's not on there and it's widely considered Disney's most high quality film. I think Beauty and the Beast and Snow White are, though, so seeing them on here makes a lot of sense. At least my third favorite Disney film (Mermaid) made it in.

I don't know why Cinderella (1950) sold so poorly. My guess is because it was released not long before it got released again, not everyone has Blu-rays, and I guess it's not really one the most popular of the popular classics.
