I am the reboot that shan't disappoint... Darkwing's Back!

Post by Widdi »

He is the terror that flaps in the night…and he’ll be returning very soon! Disney’s Darkwing Duck is getting a full-fledged comeback starting later this year. First, Joe Books is publishing a new Darkwing Duck ongoing comic book series which is expected to debut in April.

The creative team for Darkwing Duck will be writer Aaron Sparrow and artist James Silvani, both of whom worked on the previous Darkwing Duck comic book that was published by Boom! Studios in 2011. Andrew Dalhouse, Deron Bennett and Jesse Post will also be on the Darkwing Duck creative team.

But that’s far from the only Darkwing Duck on the horizon. Disney XD is developing a new Darkwing Duck animated series which the network says “will bring that same energy and bumbling crime-fighting spirit that fans have come to love about Darkwing Duck. We’re also going to add a gritty look that this generation of kids love. It’s our goal that fans of old and new will enjoy the new Darkwing Duck.”

Disney XD’s Darkwing Duck revival series isn’t slated to hit until 2018, so the comic will have to fill the void until then. The original Darkwing Duck animated series debuted in 1991 as a spinoff series from Ducktales. The series was created by animation veteran Tad Stones, who envisioned Darkwing Duck as a parody of Batman and several classic pulp heroes, including the Shadow, the Sandman, Doc Savage, and the Lone Ranger. The only character from Ducktales who had a leading role on Darkwing Duck was Launchpad McQuack, Darkwing Duck’s pilot and sidekick. Rounding out the heroic trio was Darkwing Duck’s young daughter, Gosalyn

With Ducktales coming back next year I've always felt that Darkwing wouldn't be far behind. The Boom Comics from a few years ago were disappointing to me. They tried too hard to imitate the old cartoon and didn't seem to realize the slapstick didn't come off as well as it does on TV. I hope these new comics and TV series are used as a reboot tool rather than another continuation. I think Darkwing could hold his own in the superhero obsessed world of today as long as they do him right. My hopes are high on this one, I really hope Disney doesn't disappoint.

Cool and all, but wait, you want this to be a "reboot" tool and not a continuation? You don't want to see new, continuing adventures of Darkwing Duck, just the old stories redone?

On his Facebook, Tad Stones has said otherwise. Take another look at this "news". It's based on an April Fool's joke last year.

I think a reboot makes more sense, especially for a new Television project. Kids today do not know who Darkwing Duck is anymore. Now is the chance to take him beyond the Saturday Morning fluff cartoon he has been. Create an established canon. A true origin story for him and his rogue gallery. I LOVE classic Darkwing Duck. I have plans to get a Darkwing Duck tattoo. But you can't say he isn't rather dated at this point. I will be the first to admit I grow tired of the "gritty" filter applied to almost all Supes now, but if they are going to inject some grit into DW they need to restart the story.

There is so much potential here that would be wasted if they tried only to appeal to those of us who were the right age to have watched the original show in the early nineties. The original series will always hold a place in my heart, but let's try something new now. Keep the spirit of the old show, but update it for modern audiences.

That is correct. The information on that article is from an old April Fools' joke by Nerd Reactor. Tad Stones has confirmed this on Twitter as well. Therefore, I'll be locking this thread to avoid any further confusion. If you wish to talk about the show, you can do so in the main Darkwing Duck thread.
