Im curious about whats going to happen now that Anomalisa is getting critical buzz, its also got a big name indie director attached... but Im curious if it will be seen as too artsy fartsy for the voters who prefer safe "whatever their kids like" choices. Or will they cheat and nominate it for best screenplay or even best picture, leaving the actual animation nom for the big studios to fight among themselves.

I believe so as well. Especially now that Pixar has two features in contention. That certainly explains not submitting the Tinker Bell movie this year when they had no problem submitting the previous ones. I hate it when they do that. It's like spitting in the face of the cast and crew who made those movies. It wouldn't have cost them anything to submit them. They only had to fill-out a form. Studios should always submit their eligible movies even if they are a long-shot. It not only shows appreciation for the filmmakers and the hard work they've put into making those films, it also helps reach the necessary number of submissions in order for the category to have five nominees. Even if one less feature was submitted this year, we wouldn't be getting five nominees.

Disney has done that before when they purposefully didn't submit Atlantis so that Monsters Inc. would get more votes. They actually admitted to that. Ironic, considering it ended up losing. I hate it how they always bend over backwards for Pixar. Of course now that Lasseter has turned WDAS into Pixar Jr., I'm not sure it even matters anymore.

For some reason, I always assumed Atlantis was submitted. Looks like Disney also didn't submit Recess: School's Out that year.

DreamWorks also didn't submit Sinbad for the 2003 Oscars. I also just noticed this is the first year an Alvin and the Chipmunks movie wasn't submitted.

I think the nominations are between six movies: Inside Out, The Good Dinosaur (depending on its reviews, of course), The Peanuts Movie, Anomalisa, Shaun the Sheep and When Marnie Was There. I would have predicted The Prophet, but that didn't get the most positive reception, so I think GKIDS will put most of their eggs in the Marnie basket, which also has sentiment for Studio Ghibli in its favour. It also looks like Paramount will give The Little Prince a US release next year instead, otherwise that could have had a shot at getting nominated this year.

If that's really the case, I really feel like it makes no sense. I really don't see how submitting Tinker Bell or Strange Magic could hurt the chances for Inside Out (or The Good Dinosaur). I mean, not only do those movies virtually have no chance, but if they were to take away votes from other films, they wouldn't just take away votes from other Disney-owned films. I would understand if they hadn't given either film a qualifying run yet, but Strange Magic was released wide, and Tinker Bell had a limited engagement that should qualify it.

Also, 16 features were submitted, but not all of them have actually qualified yet. I'm sure a few of these haven't had their qualifying theatrical runs yet. Which means, it is possible that less than 16 films will end up qualifying, and they won't end up with 5 nominations, which would be unfortunate, especially considering films that would have qualified weren't submitted.

Right now, I'm predicting the nominees will be Inside Out, Anomalisa, The Peanuts Movie, Shaun the Sheep Movie, When Marnie Was There. The Good Dinosaur and The Boy and the World could potentially sneak in. A number of Oscar prediction websites are predicting The Good Dinosaur, but I think the "good, not great" reception and there being a far more popular and beloved Pixar film in the mix will work against it.

The Annie nominations are out. This year the Annies are introducing a new category for indie animated features. You can check the nominees for every category, here.

I'm really surprised and perplexed that Richard Williams' Prologue didn't garner a nomination for Best Short. It's also weird that Anomaslisa got snubbed in the Writing category (especially considering the screenplay was nominated at the Independent Spirit Awards). I'm glad though that Man and Dog from Duncan Studio was nominated for Best Commercial.

Anomalisa
Inside Out
Shaun the Sheep Movie

So I was just looking at the rules... It seems that a film that qualifies can only submit for either the main Best Animated Feature category or the Independent category, but not both (thus the lack of overlap) I have a feeling this will discourage many smaller films from submitting in the bigger category, meaning the main category will most likely be almost exclusively comprised of wide releases (i.e. big budget films from the American studios). That said, I guess the category doesn't look that bad this year considering both Shaun the Sheep and Anomalisa are in there.

It looks like the race is between Inside Out and Anomalisa. The New York Film Critics Circle named Inside Out as the Best Animated Film this year whereas the Los Angeles Film Critics Association named Anomalisa.

Those five seem pretty solid for the Oscar nominations too. Glad to see the god awful Minions get snubbed.

So the same as the main category for the Annies.... Hopefully at least one of When Marnie Was There, The Boy and the Beast, or Boy and the World can squeeze its way in there for the Oscars. I wouldn't mind the Good Dinosaur being knocked off.

Any chance that Inside Out will be nominated for Best Picture? It's basically recieved the same level of praise that the 2007-2010 films did. Or is an animated film being nominated not likely to happen again?

Yes, I would've preferred TGD to have been knocked out for either WMWT or B&tW.

I'd be happy to see Inside Out possibly nominated for Best Picture, although in a way it would annoy me since so many great animated films have been released over the years would never have had a shot at it because they didn't have "Pixar" attached. Frozen, Spirited Away, Coraline, etc. come to mind. But then, there were many years there that other films deserved to win BAF over a Pixar film, too, imo and didn't. It just feels like animated films without the Pixar name are automatically not taken as seriously.

Whether Inside Out can manage to get a nomination for Best Picture has always been the only interesting aspect of the animated side of things this year because it has the win locked up in the animated category.

Sadly I actually do think there is some tough competition this year, and Inside Out is resting on the cusp in the 9-12 range on the list of films most likely to be nominated (chances are the Academy nominates 8 or 9). If it makes it, it'll be by the skin of its teeth, and I think the Academy is more than happy to just honor it in the Best Animated category. There is a chance it sneaks in so that alone says a lot, but for some reason Disney isn't campaigning or creating much buzz for it to happen so they're not making the most of the opportunity. I hope it's not because they think Star Wars has a chance at getting nominated :/

The Critics Choice Awards announced their nominees yesterday and it didn't make it in to the Best Picture lineup (which is usually pretty close to the Oscars other than 1 or 2 spots):

The Big Short
Bridge of Spies
Brooklyn
Carol
Mad Max: Fury Road
The Martian
The Revenant
Room
Sicario
Spotlight

For the record their choices for Best Animated Film were the same five as the Golden Globes.

The Academy's animation branch like to throw a bone to a smaller or foreign animated film, so I think it's possible for When Marnie Was There to sneak in, considering their love for Studio Ghibli and the sentimental value attached to it. Of the five above, I think The Good Dinosaur is the most vulnerable.
