Am I the only one getting tired of surprise villains? It wouldn't bother me so much if they weren't all in a row.

It seems Moana is going to break that trend.JeanGreyForever wrote:Am I the only one getting tired of surprise villains? It wouldn't bother me so much if they weren't all in a row.
Re: Zootopia
At first it was kind of nice but after a while, I miss the more old fashioned obviously evil villains who take great delight in their atrocities.JeanGreyForever wrote:Am I the only one getting tired of surprise villains? It wouldn't bother me so much if they weren't all in a row.
On a side note, I am looking forward to Michael Giacchino brings to this film. Not that I disliked Henry Jackman's scores, but it's nice to have someone different and I imagine he might bring a bit of a Looney Tunes vibe to the whole thing.

I miss the great charismatic and engaging Disney villains. If there's one thing that Disney actually does well, villains. Whether they're comical or hostile.
Re: Zootopia
Considering Zootopia is a bit of a whodunit and about two people investigating a crime, a more secret villain actually adds to the plot. We can try to piece together the clues as we watch. Hans also served as a message, that appearances aren't everything. Meanwhile, the surprise villain in Big Hero 6 served little purpose.

True, but Hans would've made more sense in a plot/context which calls for such a antagonist. Something like "Shrek" and "Enchanted", but not for something that already had a plotline which was enough for a movie.

I agree, the only one that didn't work for me was the guy from BH6 (not even worth remembering what his name is).Victurtle wrote:Considering Zootopia is a bit of a whodunit and about two people investigating a crime, a more secret villain actually adds to the plot. I'm putting all my eggs in the Moana basket for a great villain, otherwise Yzma might remain the last one for quite a while. It's really sad to see the company fail to produce a great villain when that's one of the things Disney has always been best at in the past. Not surprising though, since Pixar is a total fail when it comes to villains.

Listening to most often lately:
Taylor Swift ~ "Elizabeth Taylor"
Katy Perry ~ "bandaid"
Meghan Trainor ~ "Still Don't Care"

Indeed! The only decent Pixar villain is Hopper from "A Bugs Life", but he was not as compelling as other Pixar villains. I hope the Lasseter regime will end soon

Agreed, it was completely unnecessary.DisneyFan09 wrote:True, but Hans would've made more sense in a plot/context which calls for such a antagonist. Something like "Shrek" and "Enchanted", but not for something that already had a plotline which was enough for a movie.

See the other thing is we live in a society today that wants more "realism" in a lot of things. Like every villain in some kids movie has to have either a tragic backstory or come completely out of nowhere showing that even the nicest looking characters aren't angelic. It was at first kind of interesting but then it got kind of old and it saps a bit of the entertainment out. And I know some people would be like, "well, villains have to have a reason for being evil outside of just because...". But sometimes those purely evil characters are a lot more fun because for one thing, there are no boundaries in how they perform. Also, knowing right away who the villain is and what he desires makes us root for the hero even more. Can you imagine just how boring Scar would have been if he simply wanted to rule the kingdom for good intentions but just went about it the wrong way? Or what if Ursula had a legitimate reason for hating King Trion? Or how about Maleficent and Aurora being frie--Oh wait they already made a movie about that. The one surprise villain I did was King Candy mainly because he was fun to watch, he reveled in his evil deeds, and, when he reveals his true nature, he does become legitimately threatening.

Not impressed with the poses. They're doing Rapunzel/Flynn poses again.

It makes me love it even more that Judy is made the main protagonist because she is absolutely adorable.

Re: Zootopia
It looks like Disney doesn't have much faith in the film. That would explain the lack of marketing and promotion for it. Bob Iger called Zootopia a "sleeper hit" at the recent earnings call.

Re: Zootopia
My suspicion is that it will be a lot like The Emperor's New Groove. From what I recall, Disney didn't do a lot of promotion for that film either, and then seemed a bit surprised when it did pretty well. Contrasted with Atlantis: The Lost Empire which was promoted pretty heavily but didn't seem to find it's audience.Sotiris wrote:It looks like Disney doesn't have much faith in the film. From what they showed us of Zootopia at D23, I think this film will be very funny . . . and not in a Shrek/potty humor way. I didn't have high expectations for the film prior to D23, but based on what I saw, I expect it to be as good as Wreck It Ralph or Big Hero 6.
We will know for sure in four months . . .

Re: Zootopia
This is different. It was only after the fact, the film was proclaimed a sleeper hit and it was by the media, not Disney themselves. It's really odd that Iger would publicly underplay Zootopia's box office performance, 4 months before it even premiered. It's like they've written it off already and are deliberately trying to keep expectations low.RyGuy wrote:From what I recall, Disney didn't do a lot of promotion for that film either, and then seemed a bit surprised when it did pretty well.
