I finally saw it last night myself. I've been looking forward to this movie since it was announced, and I somehow managed to avoid reading any spoilers which is a bit of a feat for me. Overall, I liked it. Yeah, early reactions were a bit too "glowing," but it's the best Pixar film since "Toy Story 3." I thought it felt a bit slight, and some of the plot points seemed contrived. I mean, why was it so important to get Riley to wake up? Sure, it would have made their trek quicker if she was awake, but like Joy said earlier in the movie, when Riley's asleep nothing bad can happen. I thought that was was Joy's top priority, to keep as much of Riley's mind intact as possible and she risked that by waking Riley up. That just seemed like an illogical decision the character made so that the story would have more urgency.

I thought the humor was very sophisticated for a movie like this. A lot of jokes that weren't immediately recognizable as jokes. Like the boxes on the train of thought labelled "Facts" and "Opinions." Joy knocks some over and they all spill out, and Bing Bong just mixes them together and say, "Happens all the time." Didn't get at first, but a couple seconds later it made sense. There was a lot of humor like that in the movie. Even a Chinatown reference (I guess Riley's a Polanski fan? Come to think of it, perhaps not the most appropriate reference in a family film about a prepubescent girl...)! I think it'll be easier to catch all the jokes that might have zoomed past me when I get the BD. I noticed that not many people were laughing during the movie, however.

Also, has their been any discussion about just how "Disney" this movie is? First off, it's primarily driven by females, which are the sort of films that Disney is generally most successful with and for Pixar... this is their 2nd female driven film in their entire 20 year history, right? And the universe building is much more fanciful and whimiscal than any other universe building I've seen in a Pixar film. The Islands of Personality looked much more like the Candy Kingdom than Monstropolis or post-Apocalyptic Earth. It's got the darker tones of a Pixar film, yes, and the "two opposites join forces to achieve a common goal" plotline, but of course Disney movies have been using that since at least "The Princess and the Frog," now. I've even found myself saying Disney-Pixar in all earnestness, as though the brands are beginning to blend into one inside my mind. In 1999, "Tarzan" and "Toy Story 2" might not have paired for perfect double feature viewing, but "Inside Out" and "Frozen" feel very similar to me, two movies about women who go on figurative and literal journeys to connect with their emotions. There's been a lot of talk about the Pixarification of Disney, but is anybody else seeing an opposite, if perhaps unequal Disneyfication of Pixar?

I didn't like the short that much. I haven't seen a Pixar movie in the theatre since Wall-E (six years!), and perhaps everybody else in the audience hadn't for a similar period of time because people were so confused when Lava came on. I heard people whispering that they thought they'd walked into the wrong movie. By the way, Disney and Pixar share tech, right? So was Lava a test for Moana, then?

'Lava' was a total mess. And I'm saying that as someone who loved all their short films!

Really? I never felt the movie was dark and bleak. It dove into the serious themes, but I felt it was emotional and heart-wrenching, not dark.

Agreed! I couldn't said it better myself!

That's a fair comparison, but I felt "Inside Out" handled it better. In "Frozen", Anna is the main lead, while Elsa just serves as a catalyst for the events. Elsa's screentime gets reduced, when she certainly is a character with a more compelling struggle and therefore should've been equally enhanced. But really the movie never evolves Anna. And while Elsa goes through an minor arc, both of them becomes just one-dimensional stereotypes. It would've been more compelling if they were given more dimension (or to be more specific, having them really experienced each others emotions).

"Inside Out" could've enhanced the conflict more, but at least gives Joy an reasonable arc. She desperately wants Riley to be happy and will do whatever it takes, also excluding Sadness. At the end, Joy learns (in a subtle way) the necessarity of Sadness. It's better than what "Frozen" did, though I wished "Inside Out" would've gone further with it.
There's been a lot of talk about the Pixarification of Disney, but is anybody else seeing an opposite, if perhaps unequal Disneyfication of Pixar?
You're three years too late! Kidding! ;) While many have deliberately blamed Disney for Pixar's downfall, I don't think it's really Disney's fault. Though you've could've seen "Brave" as a part of it. I'm probably going to be slammed for this, but I've felt Pixar was quite Disneyesque with their first films, before they found a different path. But let's not forget that Pixar has always been under Disney's realm. So they've always been Disneyfied in a way.

First off, this film was a big first for me. I had seen every PIXAR film from Monster's Inc. to Monster's University on opening day and Toy Story, Bug's Life and Toy Story 2 before that opening weekend. I ended up seeing Inside Out a full week after it came out, which is the longest I've gone in seeing a PIXAR film after it came out to theaters. Where once I proudly called myself a PIXAR fan boy, I'm not sure I feel as strongly about PIXAR anymore. After their last three films (not as much MU), I've been loosing my interest. I'm sad to say that Inside Out didn't fix anything for me.

Don't get me wrong, there were elements and characters I liked, but on the whole I found it to be a weak film. I think I liked the movie better than Brave (if that says anything positive), but there were parts that just didn't make sense to me. I'm going to watch it again when it comes out on DVD, maybe it will make more sense on a second viewing? All I know is I really hope that Dinosaur film at the end of the year is good or I might stop going to every PIXAR film in the theater.

It's a shame I missed this in theaters because it was already out a week when I had to do my job study, which lasted a few weeks (I never see movies on the weekend because I hate crowds). The trailers looked terrible at first, but it got better with the tv spots and promos and then the reception picked up. I usually see movies on Tuesday, but it's been a busy Summer that I haven't had time. Guess I'll have to wait for the Blu-Ray.

This is quite common, actually. Disney, recently, has been putting international versions of the movies on the blu-ray and sometimes even on the DVDs. All recent Disney movies on blu-ray shows up with the titles and etc on the language you're watching the movie. It's quite cool to put up a movie and see it translated to your language.
Of course, as far as I'm concerned, this is common only with graphic signs, like written things and stuff, but still.

So the supplemental disc is exclusive, huh? What a pity. It shows how far even the Pixar releases has come... (*shrug*).

Loved this! It was very creative with the worlds and rules they created for inside the mind, had lots of vibrant and fun characters, and put forth an important, unique message. Just lots of fun and very touching as well. Abstract thought, Dream Studios, and Riley's dream boyfriend were my favorite gags  And exploring the dual nature of joy and sadness and learning not to suppress your emotions, even the "bad" ones, really got to me and my own emotions.

I absolutely despised "Lava" though. Pointless pandering utter garbage.

Well.....this is last second
In a strangely quiet and late discovery, Pixar will unveil its newest short on Good Morning America this Thursday, August 13. The short, Riley’s First Date, takes place inside the world of Inside Out and is expected to premiere with the film’s Blu-ray.

She's 12, as she was at the end of the movie, and it's not clear from the clip that was shown that she is actually going on a date.

I love that Riley's father mind headquarters is like a nuclear submarine, all black and red and with a 50's looking console LOL!

On the other hand, father is not THAT old right?? They make it look like he comes straight outta 50's with that whole fear/rage of boys and the whole gettingk the foot down....
