We’re starting to shoot Beauty and the Beast for Disney and Allegiant on the same day, May 18th. Beauty and the Beast we’re wildly excited about. That’s shooting in London. We’ve got Emma Watson, we’ve got Bill Condon directing, and Stephen Chbosky wrote our script. It’s really fun, and we couldn’t be happier about that. And we have Allegiant.

So, what's the official cast so far? I don't know if the information online is official.

Update from producer Todd Lieberman.
"We’re starting to shoot Beauty and the Beast for Disney and Allegiant on the same day, May 18th. Beauty and the Beast we’re wildly excited about. That’s shooting in London. We've got Emma Watson, we've got Bill Condon directing, and Stephen Chbosky wrote our script. It’s really fun, and we couldn't be happier about that."

On the Beauty and the Beast update, Lieberman also said the film sticks to a “classic” approach to the material, but will introduce “new elements” and new characters.

I guess it's time I ask this question: WHY is Disney remaking Beauty and the Beast?

Unlike the other remakes, there's more of a feeling here that there was something "wrong" with the animated version that must now be corrected in a live-action version. Again, why?

Is there? I get no such feeling. It looks like every other remake Disney is doing. I guess the only difference is that this is a musical but then again the live-action Jungle Book remake is a musical too.

Is it? I had no idea! How interesting! Can you give us a source for that, Sotiris?

It has more to do with how Beauty and the Beast was made about 24 years ago. This is relatively modern compared to Alice in Wonderland, Cinderella, and Sleeping Beauty, which were each made 50-65 years ago.

Granted, two of those three took a while before they caught on. But Beauty and the Beast was a major leap forward for animated filmmaking, not limited to its Best Picture nomination. How will this remake even begin to top it?

Well, the director said that it's technically not a musical but it's been confirmed that Bill Murray will be singing in it and that Richard Sherman is writing new songs for the movie, so if it quacks like a duck...

I don't think it's supposed to. Have any other of Disney's remakes matched or topped the original? No.

I agree, I don't really get that feeling either. But I do wonder why they decided to re-create the musical (and film, by extension) when Cinderella was a new adaptation, Alice in Wonderland was sequel-ish, and Maleficent was a flipside of SB.

PS: I didn't quite know where to post this and I doubt many/anyone here might care, but Josh Groban will be singing a cover of "If I Can't Love Her" on his new album Stages (a cover of theatrical songs) to be released in May.

Isn't this based more on the Broadway musical? To me, that makes this more in line with movies like Hairspray, Little Shop of Horrors, The Producers and Sweet Charity. None of which are remakes, but rather adaptations of stage shows that were adapted from movies.

Josh Gad would be perfect as Lefou. (Has this been confirmed? If so, this cast is looking flawless. The only other characters to really worry about are Cogsworth and Lumiere.)

LeFou had a very American accent in the original movie, even compared to the other characters. Other characters had American accents, I suppose, but LeFou's was particularly crass compared to everyone else. Not sure it'd be necessary to give him a British accent, because his character is already comic relief, and Gad's voice is funny enough as it is. But who knows. Whatever they decide, I'm sure it'll work.

Oh I do hope that they will not talk with British accents in this movie. Belle, Beast, Gaston etc should sound American. Mrs Potts and Clocksworth British.

Not surprised that Josh Gad has been cast as LeFou. He seems typecasted to play comedic characters.

If they kept the French setting, I've wouldn't mind if the cast had a French accent. It may sound cheesy, but hey, it would have a semi-authenticity. However, I guess they most likely will have a British accent, as they do with most grand, fantasy films.
