Thoughts on the change of color on Cinderella´s dress

Post by DC Fan »

I asked about why the Cincerella´s dress color was changed from silver to blue once. I was told that, from a merchandising perspective, it´s easier to sell it as blue than silver.

And, basically, the same thing happened with Belle´s dress from gold to yellow. In this case, however, I don´t mid that much since I don´t find it particularly drastic the change. However, that´s not the case with Cinderella.

Why does it "bothers" me? For once, because basically forever is lost the knowledge that Cinderella´s dress is silver...in fact, now the live action version will go the blue route as well; they could have fixed it instead by going back to silver. Don´t know why Disney didn´t do it.

The other thing is that, for the most part, each princess has a different color for her dress; most part I said. Snow White (pale) yellow and bue, Aurora pink, Tiana green, Belle yellow/gold...You get my point. Then came Elsa with her blue dress. Now sharing a color with Cinderella. Something that didn´t have to happen if Disney had stayed with Cinderella´s silver dress.

Yes, I now. A very stupid, and absurd "debate". But it´s something I wanted to share. Someone else feels the same way?

I agree with most of what you're saying. The new live-action Disney Cinderella could have given her the silver dress she's supposed to have (and that I even sent a letter to its director Kenneth Branagh about it!), but they went with blue. And all the princesses have colors that represent them and silver could be for Cinderella so someone else can have blue!

However, I actually don't mind the blue in the live-action film because Cinderella's animated dress looks blue sometimes and maybe it's a bluish silver. And the blue dress in the live-action film just looks stunningly gorgeous. It just looks so perfect I don't mind it. And it looks like it represents goodness and happiness for Cinderella.

Also, eventually we will run out of colors for each princess, so somewhere along the line colors will repeat and we'll have more than one blue.

But yes, it seems Disney always makes Cinderella's dress blue because the color is liked more by children/grabs their attention more.

At least someone agrees with me.

And yes, there´s going to be a time when they´ll run out of colors (hope not because that means tons more of princesses and no thanks). Still, as said, Cinderella already had a silver dress (could contrast Belle´s gold). That was her color. And, by now, going with that route in the movie there´s not going back anymore. Now most people in the world will think she wears a blue dress.

Thanks, from my part, for contacting them and letting them know. Did you get any answer?

Also, what could have been more special than having Cinderella with the silver dress?

...again, for Belle it´s a shame too but it´s not that noticeable since they almost all the time go a for a strong yellow that resembles gold anyways or (in this case) thanks to the glitter helps make it so.

Oh, lots of people agree with you. I guess just not a lot of people showed up to answer this post, is all.

I also wish there wouldn't be so many Disney princesses, but alas, there probably will be a huge number before we die, lol.

The live-action Disney movie will make people think her dress is blue even more, but I don't care about that. People can still learn it is silver when they watch the original animated movie. And it's not like the live-action film keeps all the colors the same as the originals. For instance, the stepmother now wears almost always green dresses. Only once does she ever wear a purplish red one like the animated film's.

I never got anything back from Kenneth Branagh when I wrote to him about Cinderella's dress color.

I agree that Cinderella's dress being silver is part of what makes it special. I also want it to be silver because it's prettier and in the original glass slipper version of the fairy tale her dress is described as being silver and gold.

When I see Belle's dress in merchandise I think it's just a really yellowish looking gold. But a lot of people mistake it for yellow, even when seeing the original movie.

Here's Cinderella in her original film silver dress:

The color change didn't stop with the dress; her hair somehow changed to a solid blonde in merchandising as well.

Cinderella was obviously not conceived upon a basic color palette, so it's not surprising that she loses her appeal when that's what she's reduced to.

To me Cinderella (Walt Disney's, that is) will always be a beautiful maiden with strawberry blonde/burnt orange hair who captured the heart of Prince Charming at the ball while wearing a stunning white/silver gown. 'Nuff said.

Yea, they make her a yellow blonde now which is also not correct.

But Semaj, what did you mean in that last part? That Cinderella is such a poor character she needs her original colors to be liked?

Strawberry blonde with a silver dress is much more elegant. The Princess brand version is garish.

Like you guys, I think they should have kept it silver, with her original hair colour. It's extremely annoying that the live action film now has her blonde and in a blue gown as well; at least Maleficent kept her original costume for the Christening scene (minus the purple inner sleeve colour), and you can see they've adapted from her original animated outfit in her other costumes in the film.

Maybe it was changed from silver in the Princess line as it looks too much like a wedding gown ? Just a thought.

I always thought that was down to the fact of different lighting ?

Nothing to do with her actual character. ANY character risks becoming less visually appealing when their original colors are altered. Even for purposes of simplification, sea blue just doesn't work for Cinderella.

Yes, her dress looks blue in that shot cause they are supposed to be in (relative) darkness, and under the night sky, so everything has a blueish tint. Look at the prince's top: it's supposed to be white, but in this shot it looks light-blue...

And look at their skin color... they are definitely in darkness.

I don't mind that they changed the costumes so much for the live-action Disney Cinderella. Seeing new costume designs is a joy. I just wish Cinderella's was more impressive, is all. Like the Mattel doll's. I think I would love if they made the costumes a lot more like the originals like Maleficent's in the christening scene in Maleficent, but I love them as they are, too.

If Cinderella's dress was a slightly bluish silver instead of white, I don't think it would look like a wedding dress.

You and Atlantica are quite right that it is the lighting that makes Cinderella and the Prince look like they are wearing blue. Actually the prince's jacket is a yellow or gold, as you can see by this picture I took from the original film:

it doesnt bother me in merch much b/c Ive been so used to it being that way(blue) but it should NOT be changed in the original movies just to match the merchandise and appeal to kids. Thats just wrong on so many levels.

I do think that the more pricesses they add and thus run out of color options, it would be a good idea to have Cindy go back to silver and Belle back to gold so they can complement each other!

Thanks. And I didn´t mean that many people thought our way because they didn´t reply to this post. Just that I didn´t think people care that much anyways. But thank you for letting me know.

As for Lady Tremaine (and even Drizella and Anastasia) change in dress that I don´t mind. As much as I love villains, and she´s amazing, she was never center stage. It was all about Cinderella.

...if things were different and she did have a constant presence on screen then I´d be bothered by the change.

Still, it´s what we´ve been saying. The live action movie will just stamp forever that she´s wearing a blue dress. When, that color alongside yellow (in case of Belle´s gold dress) could have been used for other princesses.

I agree, I wish they would have made Cinderella's dress and Belle's dress look silver and gold, respectively, in the merchandise. But there's no use getting worked up about. All the characters get this treatment, like Ariel getting ketchup hair and Aurora with a dress that's hot pink rather than the warm pink in the film.

Moreover, I think we're far past the point where it can be fixed. Cinderella's dress being blue is almost stamped into the public consciousness at this point, unfortunately.
