Source: http://www.courant.com/entertainment/ar ... story.htmlAlso on tap is a stage version of "Tangled" for Disney, that will begin on a cruise line in Shanghai. It's an hour show with the potential to become larger. Composer Alan Menken has already written four new songs.

4 new songs by Menken? Love it! I hope they will release a recording of this show. And I would love a Broadway production of Tangled someday... (As well as Enchanted, Pocahontas and Hercules!)

Cool! I hope those songs are going to be better than those who already were in the movie.Prince Edward wrote:4 new songs by Menken? Love it! I hope they will release a recording of this show. I hope they are the deleted songs from the movie. A recent interview with Slater made those sound really interesting/more Broadway.
I've always felt Tangled would make a much better Broadway show than Frozen, but alas, Frozen will make it to the stage first anyway.

According to The Three Commentears, the songs for the stage production were developed from the cues of the score for the final film.Atlantica wrote:Ooooo yes yes yes yes to new Tangled songs !!!!! Cues from the score ? So bits of score will be worked into songs, much like Menken did for the Mermaid Broadway adaption ?

That's what I thought when I read it. Sort of like "Jig" --> "One Step Closer." I wonder if "Kingdom Dance" might be used for a song?Atlantica wrote:Cues from the score ? So bits of score will be worked into songs, much like Menken did for the Mermaid Broadway adaption ?

Listening to most often lately:

Quite interesting article. It's understandable why some people would question if a sincere fairy tale would be a box office hit. Fortunately destiny has proven the opposite.blackcauldron85 wrote:Story director Mark Kennedy on people's thoughts on Disney making Tangled back in the day:

I find this odd, cause prior to Tangled's release WDAS didn't have a huge it since Lilo & Stitch. Treasure Planet & Home on the Range were Box Office flops, Brother Bear was decent but did nothing to save 2D animation at the studio, Chicken Little was a critical failure, Meet the Robinsons made less than $170 million domestic & worldwide combined & Bolt made less than Chicken Little. None of these films had a chance against sequels to Shrek, Madagascar, Kung-Fu Panda, Ice Age & whatever Pixar released. So clearly it wasn't just "Princess Fairy-Tales" that Disney was having problems with. To me Tangled did what Cinderella & The Little Mermaid did, it turn the entire studio around, ushering in new eras & had the Box Office numbers to show it.blackcauldron85 wrote:Story director Mark Kennedy on people's thoughts on Disney making Tangled back in the day:

Re: Tangled (& Tangled Ever After) Discussion: Part VII
Yes, thats exactly what I mean; such a good way to utilise beautiful music cues as well. That's something I think was extremely lacking in Frozen; apart from a handful of times, the songs weren't threaded into the score at all. Thats's the beauty of having the score / songs all done by the same team I suppose ? I don't know the technicalities behind it, but just what I gather.Disney's Divinity wrote:That's what I thought when I read it. Sort of like "Jig" --> "One Step Closer." I'm excited for new songs because the current soundtrack is incredibly underwhelming to me. I've tried to like it but it sticks out as thoroughly unremarkable among all the other Disney soundtracks I listen to. Hopefully the new ones have a more classic Menken vibe.
Tangled would never really work on Broadway though. It belongs on a cruise ship to be honest, so this is a good place for it.

Why? Do you not consider the plot to be epic enough?Lady Cluck wrote:Tangled would never really work on Broadway though. It belongs on a cruise ship to be honest, so this is a good place for it.

I think they'd be stretching for songs though. I mean, besides Kingdom Dance, that campfire scene or the ending, I can't think of another place where a non-reprise song wouldn't feel forced. Even if you do fit songs into those parts, they probably wouldn't add much or feel necessary anyway. Plus, all of the action scenes AND Rapunzel's hair would be very hard to replicate onstage. That poor actress who would have to run around in that wig; her movement would be VERY limited and choreography would probably suffer from it. I'm curious to see what Menken and everyone else involved does with this.
On the other hand, Frozen felt like it was more built for broadway. There are loads of opportunities new songs (more Hans and Kristoff singing and Elsa/Anna duets
). The plot just allows for more quiet moments where songs could be a benefit. Plus, the lead actresses aren't weighed down by their wigs.

Re: Tangled (& Tangled Ever After) Discussion: Part VII
Back when the movie first came out, I found myself visualizing how they might bring this show to life on broadway. I think that, so long as the audience is willing to use their imagination as they do in Lion King, etc, that it could be done quite beautifully. Rapunzel's hair length could be done with beautiful ribbon/silks. It could hang from the rafters, or it could be part of the stage's border itself. It could be gorgeous.
Kind of like how the ice show did briefly, but more elaborate.

Songwise, I feel like Flynn needs his own song (perhaps an "I Want" song around when he steals the crown/is introduced.) He could later reprise this while in prison awaiting his fate, realizing his priorities have changed. Mother Gothel and Stabbingtons need something or another for their alliance. (Could be a reprise of "Mother Knows Best", or a new short song.) Something while Rapunzel and Flynn are trapped in the cave. Something for the campfire scene. A "When Will My Life Begin" reprise for when Rapunzel is back home with Gothel in her room. A reprise of "Mother Knows Best" when Rapunzel confronts Gothel about her status. There are plenty of ways to get more out of the current songs, and stick new ones in too.
Can you tell I've thought about this a lot?
This is all for a possible broadway version, mind you. The cruise ship version won't need too much expanding.
