Inside Out
Re: Pete Docter's "Inside Out" (June 19, 2015)
The animation itself was pushed in tangled, no doubt. But design wise, it too was pretty generic. And not just because of the blond white girl aspect. Dont get me wrong, it was appealing, but didnt stray much from most other CG characters to date.

Okay. Then we'll have to agree to disagree.Kyle wrote:The animation itself was pushed in tangled, no doubt. But design wise, it too was pretty generic. I guess because Disney's been around longer, and therefore has more "shame" in constantly using white characters, or misrepresenting the cultures they do tackle.Avaitor wrote:Real talk though, why is Disney always getting called out for its issues with diversity, while the HTTYD movies are just as white as Frozen, yet Dreamworks gets a free pass there?
Give Disney credit though, they have an Asian and African American in their next CG flick, the latter of which beats out DreamWorks Home by a few months.

Re: Pete Docter's "Inside Out" (June 19, 2015)
I think its b/c people got really used to Disney having a string of minority characters in lead & supporting roles the 90s...Aladdin, Pocahontas, Hunchback, Hercules(muses), Mulan, TENG, Atlantis, Lilo & Stitch, PATF. I mean thats pretty impressive how diverse those films are, coming one or 2 years apart each.
but then after PITF bombed Disney has been playing it safer & focus mostly on white characers. And, correct me if Im wrong, but the majority of cgi films, Disney/Pixar or not, have seem to focus on white characters... the days of diversity back in the 90s are sadly gone b/c the competition has become more cuthroat & everyone wants to play it safe...
so yeah its really kind of unfair for Disney to get so much flack for this when they have had a better track of diversity than other studios...At the same time, its disappointing that theyve had to stoop to every other studios "keep it safe" level.

Re: Pete Docter's "Inside Out" (June 19, 2015)
In my opinion I think people are getting really overtly nit picky about this. I kind of really don't care if she is white. In fact people a while ago were complaining about how Pixar doesn't have many female protagonists but now that we have another people complain about her race.

Here's an image of the lead character for DreamWorks 'B.O.O. Bureau Of Otherworldly Operations'.Warm Regards wrote:I guess because Disney's been around longer, and therefore has more "shame" in constantly using white characters, or misrepresenting the cultures they do tackle.Avaitor wrote:Real talk though, why is Disney always getting called out for its issues with diversity, while the HTTYD movies are just as white as Frozen, yet Dreamworks gets a free pass there?

And here is Riley from Pixar's Inside Out

Why is the white Pixar character deemed racist but the white DreamWorks character is not

Re: Pete Docter's "Inside Out" (June 19, 2015)
It seems to me that certain people in the animation community are tired of Disney, Pixar included, being THE face of animation, and are quick to call them out in any way. Meanwhile, "poor Dreamworks" generally receives a pass, even when some of their duds like Bee Movie and Shark Tale become memes to call out how ridiculous they are.
I've never been a Dreamworks hater, and I do genuinely adore the HTTYD's, KFP's, and Prince of Egypt, but this really gets to me.

THANK YOU.DisneyEra wrote:Why is the white Pixar character deemed racist but the white DreamWorks character is notThis is what we call a double standard
Ok, story time:
Around the time people were whining about white people in Frozen, I noticed that one of icons of the whiners was a dragon from HTTYD. So, I told her "If Frozen is racist, so is HTTYD." And her response? "Oh, but HTTYD has a reason it has white people: It takes place in Scotland." And I responded: "But, Frozen's in 1800s Norway." Her response? "NO! THERE HAS TO BE WHITE PEOPLE! IF THERE'S TALKING SNOWMEN, THERE CAN BE ONE POC."

Dreamworks Fandom is honestly the worst animation fandom. Unlike the Disney fandom who knows Disney's mistakes and flaws, the DW fans think that DW is superior and perfect. Yesterday, someone compared the texture to IO and the texture to Dreamworks, calling the Pixar texture lazy and bland, but DW's is "so in-detail".

That actually does makes sense. Once Lasseter leave, it's possible that appearances will be much more diverseDisney's Divinity wrote:To be honest, I think that's exactly what they do. It reminds me of how John Lasseter basically x'ed out all individuality and style from American Dog and Rapunzel as soon as he came on board. But being bland obviously results in more mass appeal (or, in other words, more $$$).
100% WRONG! If this was the case, the secondary and background characters of WIR and the cast of BH6 would be 100% whiteunprincess wrote:And, correct me if Im wrong, but the majority of cgi films, Disney/Pixar or not, have seem to focus on white characters... the days of diversity back in the 90s are sadly gone b/c the competition has become more cuthroat & everyone wants to play it safe...

Focusing does not mean 100%. Having token black characters doesn't contradict unprincess' point.disneyprincess11 wrote:100% WRONG! If this was the case, the secondary and background characters of WIR and the cast of BH6 would be 100% white
Re: Pete Docter's "Inside Out" (June 19, 2015)
Character designs for DreamWorks B.O.O. As you can see, ALL white characters. But it's not Disney/Pixar, so it's OK

I cant recall the ethnic characters in WIR...
and yes BH6 is diverse but why not have set it in Japan like the original comic book?
Im talking about CGI films with a minority as the main character/s. There is Home coming soon, and Moana, and Book of Life will focus on Hispanic culture so there are some things to look forward to.

Now why does that kid with the brown swirly hair look so familiar? Can you say "lawsuit"?DisneyEra wrote:Character designs for DreamWorks B.O.O. As you can see, ALL white characters. But it's not Disney/Pixar, so it's OK![]()

Nice use of colors, I guess?
Anyway, between this trailer and a big Square Enix presentation, this day is gonna be interesting for me.
