Making Disney DVD copies soon ? (News Article)

Post by Aladdin »

Hmmm .....
I am just curious as to what "limited" really means.
Either way I think it's great that we will be allowed to LEGALLY
make copies of out precious "babies" soon.

I've made back-up copies of all my treasures disc's and some of the rare OOP disc's i,ve got , the origonals are all tucked away safely.
I think the legal position is different over here, i think we are allowed to make back-ups - but the software to do it is out there so i did it anyway. If i've got a rare disc that would cost a lot of money to replace then i'm gonna back it up.

This won't make any difference to anyone's lives. People will still find a way to crack the code and make as many copies as they want, like they do now.

I read the article and it says the next generation of DVD's, I don't think it will apply to the 100 or so DVD's that I own now.

DVD Burning

Post by Disney Guru »

You know. How can you sleep at night. Just think if you can do this on your little DVD Burner, think of what the Oriental Bootlegers Do. They make these by the million. And trick E-Bayers into buying them. I mean this is getting sick!

"trick" people .... I think not. People should do their homework .... almost anything from Asia is a bootleg. You get what you pay for. Blame the buyers NOT the sellers. If people stopped buyiing them, then there would not be any sellers.

I have not made a copy of any of my DVDs YET ... but that's because I lack the money and therefore hardware to do it .... but if I had the money ... I would make copies too. Of course for personal use and not for re-sale .... and why not ? What if my original goes AWOL and the DVD is currently out-of-print .... oh, the pain and suffering I would have to endure.

I've gotta disagree with you, Aladdin. If the people knowingly bought bootlegs, that's one thing. Many customers out there aren't message boarding, DVD saavy eBay hounds like some of the folks here. I can't help but feel for the innocent person who doesn't know much about DVDs and/or eBay and is buying a DVD for a granddaughter's birthday present or something like that. I've even been ripped off once before myself, and I usually know what to look for (though I wasn't quite as good at it then). It's the bootleggers are commiting the crime, and it's an infuriating shame.

If the DVD is NOT for them ... (i.e. just a gift - as you mentioned) ..... then why feel for someone who probably doesn't know or care. People just want to be able to enjoy the film. Most bootlegs do NOT fetch the high prices ... believe me. People think, "Heck! I am getting a great deal", when really they are buying a bootleg copy. Silly them. People cannot be so ignorant! And that's what really bugs me.

I know, I know .... in the "ideal" world this should NOT be allowed to sell these and that is why I encourage people to post ads here from EBAY before buying ( I always post my thoughts on those people requesting help/advice). Many other readers do too! If someone is on the net buying DVDs .... then they have to learn - one way or another to be saavy. Unfortunately, this is the world we live in today .... people do anything for a buck and buyers need to be aware!

I do feel sorry you were ripped-off .... but I hope you have learned from that and SHARED your experience with others ... so they to can learn from your mistake.
May I ask what DVD it was that you bought ?? And PLEASE post the seller you bought from. It is by spreading the word, that we can help eliminate the problem.

People can be ignorant. It's just not fair to expect everyone in the world to be entirely knowledgeable on the ins and outs of bootlegging, DVD buying, and eBaying. There is a problem with bootlegs- they sometimes don't work on varying DVD players, or lose quality quickly. Needless to say, they don't carry the quality they claim to be without a declaration of an illegal copy on the auction.

But why blame the victim? I don't understand the mentality that wishes to give a free ride to the assailants- the parasites breaking the law to make a cheap buck off the unaware. They are commiting the crime against both the originators of the work and the consumer. They drag a wonderful service like eBay through the dirt. They are the problem.

I completely agree with you awallaceunc!

Well, personally, when I was starting my collection I saw a lot of fakes on eBay when it comes to Disney DVDs. Take your pic of the fakes: Aladdin, Bambi, Cinderella, The Little Mermaid, Lady and the Tramp, the list goes on and on. I've even see movies like "The Prince of Egypt" and "Anastasia", just to name a few, that were fake, being advertised as "Original Full Length Disney Animated Feature Films" with Disney Logos and the whole shpeel on the cover. Anyone not as obsessed as, eh, us would have totally thought that was genuine. I've seen claims the DVD was real and showing a picture of a fake, I've seen them claiming "great quality for a low low price" with no picture...then when you email them to ask for authenticity, they either send a nasty reply or none at all. I've seen people showing the Amazon picture for the movie, or stealing someone elses picture.
A friend of mine was duped into buying a fake Jungle Book when the user had a high feedback rating, and the image was a digital picture of the DVD cover and DVD and she asked loads of questions regarding the authenticity. Turned out, after she gave it to me, that it was a fake (Which I pointed out, because she'd told me, "I bought this for your birthday, but it's different than the photo they put up in the auction." Turned out the seller wouldn't return our emails and eventually blocked both of our addresses. I filed a complaint but so far nothing. I'm fine with keeping the fake until TJB comes out on DVD again. (I don't care for the movie anyway and the auction ended at only a few dollars.)

Anyway, my point is, even the most careful people can be duped but a fake picture is all it takes (and a lie here and there).

One good way to tell if they're fakes: Check the person's "other items for sale" If they have 50 Lady and the Tramp Limited Issues or an assortment of 80 Limited Issue DVDs, beware. Is there a picture? Ask them if they could email you more pictures from different angles. Check for a barcode, look at the region, I once found a Lady and the Tramp DVD with the wrong barcode, easy tip off, (Why was it wrong? I have no idea!)
I myself have found that the Limited Issue DVDs are the target of fakes, not so much with new movies (.i.e. Brother Bear) or common found movies (i.e. The Rescuers).

And when in doubt, don't bid!

Good suggestions DisneyGurl ... unfortunately the "right" people will not read your tips.

As for buying a fake The Jungle Book ... my point exactly .... the auction ended in only a "few dollars". So you basically got what you paid for. I just hope you posted negative feedback.
