Anyone else getting tired of the Disney Princesses?

We should just be glad there are any movies with female leads at all, rather than complain about it.

But why do they all have to be princesses?

Well Pocahontas and Mulan really aren't princesses, but they are hardly used in the franchise. Cinderella, Belle and Tiana aren't princesses until the end of their films. Some people even argue that Belle never marries the Beast and becomes a legitimate princess. I think most people like the princesses. All of the ladies in the line up are from very successful, popular films.

Snow White was the first film so this could be a reason why the princess films do so well. People like when Disney goes back to its roots so to speak. Cinderella was Disney's biggest hit after SW. The Little Mermaid put Disney back on the map. Beauty and the Beast was the first animated film in history to be nominated for best picture. Aladdin was the biggest film of 1992. Tangled and Princess and the Frog were well received and popular. And we know how huge Frozen has become.

I think the princess line is so big because what little girl wouldn't want to be a princess. And there are so many to choose from everyone can have a favorite. Plus each princess is from a film that they watch so they already have a story to build off of with these characters. It makes it more personal than some generic doll. And all of the princesses are great characters that represent something good and admirable. I agree with Atlantica that it's nice to see female characters admired for strength, intelligence, spirit and kindness.

As out of place Merida is...I always found interesting how much more so is Pocahontas.

Because, you could say the same thing about Mulan but she has more personality and even got to wear 2 different "dresses" in the movie. So you can play with that.

But, Pocahontas? Not only is she barely dressed (giving Disney a hard time trying to give her "something" to wear and fit with the rest) but she´s never...EVER, had a different expression, pose or hairstyle.

I know Disney wanted to add variety to the mix but that just proved how far they had to stretch in order to accomplish it.

As, for the topic in question I do mind the Princess line because of these 2 factors:

1. You can´t go to a Disney Store and look for something that´s not Princess related; as if they already had enough space and/or variety as it was.

2. That Jasmine took Aladdin´s place in his own movie. I mean, for a movie to be one "for boys" and that its´popular...sadly you can´t see a boy say "That´s my favorite movie!" Since now it is a Disney Princess Movie.

...not only is Jasmine the daughter of the Sultan but seems like she was also the one that found the lamp. What did Aladdin do anyways? Is he even in the movie?

She was my sister's favorite when we were children. Of course, my sister is very strange. I like the character myself, even though she's not my favorite, and I find her more interesting than Mulan.

Boys like heroes, girls like princesses. That's just how it is, so there's never going to be a shortage of either. Do all of them? of course not. But enough of them do to keep the cycle going. More variety would be nice though.

But then, Disney should give equally deserved chance to the "boys movies": Hercules, Tarzan, Emperor´s New Groove...and, don´t take Aladdin off that very limited list just to give Jasmine´s to girls.

Mulan isn't. Although Pocahontas is not exactly a princess, she still is the daughter of the local Chief. So she does have a certain type of royalty in a way (although she's not litterally a royal).

Tangled and Princess and the Frog were well received and popular.

Call me ignorant, but my impression is that "TPATF" has become somewhat semi-forgotten during these years. I know that "TPATF" wasn't a flop, but I hardly see Tiana as marketed as she used to be.

I'm not tired of the Disney Princesses but I am tired of their "line" or "franchise". But the Disney princesses are some of the best characters Disney has so they should always be around.

Oh I'm not denying that, but there is a bias, usually by design. The stereotype exists for a reason even if their not mutually exclusive. Movies about princesses (or-close-enoughceses ) draw in more girls than boys, and movies about heroes,super or otherwise draw in more boys. Boys are usually attracted to power or special ability and explosions, girls gravitate toward romance, pretty hair and dresses.

Actually, I would think that girls are equally drawn to heroes/princesses, while it's much less likely for a boy to want to be/identify with a princess. That's culturally in-line with how boys who like "feminine"-coded things are usually viewed in a negative light while tomboy girls are not; these perceptions are usually ingrained very early.

Also, I know it's a popular thing on here to want Disney to do "different" things, but I like TP&TF and Frozen much more than WIR, Bolt, or most of the "different" films from the 2000s, for instance. Actually, now that I think about it, I think we just had a decade of "different," boy-geared films that flopped and ended hand-drawn animation; I'm here for more of the "same" while we still have it (even though it doesn't seem like so much the same to me as others are making it out to be).

I love the Princesses and could never get tired of them. But for me the Princesses are just the original films. I don't do sequels, merchandise, toys etc. So I never tire of them.

Yes. But there are also magic powers and abilities in the princess movies too. And who can deny the beauty of them and their dresses. It's weird boys don't like romance as much as girls since heterosexual romance takes girls and boys together. Maybe they'd rather live it themselves then see it in media unlike girls for some unknown reason.

Being a older teen in the early 2000, I appreciated that Disney went away from their formula and made different films. And to be honest, I think the majority of the films from 2000-2004 were good ones (although "Lilo & Stitch" and "Brother Bear" had it's share of problems). However, I do still love the Disney formula and I hope that Disney will stick to it, but I don't mind if Disney goes away from their territory once in a while. But to be honest, I would prefer if Disney made a really great princess movie and not just a decent one, since I consider none of the Princess movies post 2009 were great ones, with the exception of "Brave" (which also was quite flawed).

Sorry to nitpick, but "Atlantis" was released in 2001. And Jane Porter was, according to rumors, in the official line for a while.

I remember Esmeralda and Alice being in the Disney princess mag when I was younger. Princesses have def been dropped along the way.

Talking of Pocahontas...visually, I find Pocahontas stunning. Its the first film where I remember watching all the various tie-in adverts and TV spots. Nestle ice cream cups and chocolate bars were yum.
That being said, she doesn't fit in the Princess line at all. She just looks awkward all the time. This may be the worst clip art Disney uses. It doesn't even look like Pocahontas.

I agree, it can be a bit overwhelming going into the Disney store with the huge amount of Princess Merc. It is a choice of Disney princess or Marvel in my local Disney Store with a smattering of Frozen and Planes.
