Diamond Line vs non labeled releases
Diamond Line vs non labeled releases
So,
I don´t know how many of you know this but some of the Diamond titles are being released again in Spain (I´m guessing other countries in Europe at least as well) with just no labeled category:
Snow White and Pinocchio for example:
http://www.mubis.es/titulos/blancanieve ... os-blu-ray
http://www.mubis.es/titulos/pinocho-blu-ray
With these releases, as it happened with Sleeping Beauty as well, they´re just selling the first disc of BD. So, up until here fine.
However, Disney is also releasing again titles that were supposed to go back to the Vault. But the thing is, that in terms of the Extras it varies from title to title.
For instance, while The Jungle Book comes with the exact same contents as it was Diamond:
http://www.mubis.es/titulos/el-libro-de ... va-blu-ray
That´s not the case with Bambi:
http://www.mubis.es/titulos/bambi-blu-ray-2
And then, there´s The Little Mermaid where, like The Jungle Book, the only thing missing is the Diamond label since it has the same Extras as before:
http://www.mubis.es/titulos/la-sirenita-blu-ray-2
So, my question is... Why?
What´s the point of making a new release that just takes out the Diamond label if the contents are going to be the exact same ones. And then, why is it than in other cases it actually does matter since you won´t be getting them.
I just don´t understand.

Re: Diamond Line vs non labeled releases
Disney Europe has now abandoned the vault policy and Disney releases are all over the place in Europe. This is why the Diamond banner is disappearing.
I did know about the non-labelled releases as I have seen them in various places.
Bambi was re-released without the banner in the UK but still kept all the same extras as the Diamond so we were lucky in that aspect.
Sadly, I don't think anyone but Disney can explain why the releases are so widely varied across the continent.
I don't see the point in release Sleeping Beauty as a Diamond in Germany at all. Especially when it lacks the new special features.
I have seen non-banner releases of Lady and the Tramp, Cinderella and Jungle Book start to pop up in stores. I haven't seen a non-labelled Little Mermaid yet.
I am now collecting the blu-rays just to have the film in HD. If it has extras then I am very happy. I have kept the old DVDs for anything missing. I don't watch the extras that often but I have them. I decided to collect the films on blu late in the game but if I knew they had been released as Diamond, I bought the diamond label just to be sure I got everything.
It's a (excuse me)shitty game Disney is playing.

Re: Diamond Line vs non labeled releases
Thank you for that.
Yes, I had read before (but forgot) about taking out the Diamond label in case parents may be turned off by it thinking that it meant a Collector´s Edition, that it´s too expensive and maybe skipping it hoping for a "regular" release. And in doing so, maybe loosing the sale.
...however, to me it doesn´t make sense. I mean, it´s like because it has a label on it make it more expensive than any other movie. It isn´t like the case of the regular and Collector´s Editions of DVD where the difference in prices range from $20 till almost $40. Or on the BD from a regular release to a 3D one.
But, let´s just say I get them.
Still, why then have releases that have the same Extras as the previous release and in other don´t.
Meerkat:
Good for you in completing you collection. I do understand it´s a shame not to have all the Extras but in the end (more so if you have the DVDs) the important thing is the movie itself. So, best thing is getting the chance to have it on HD than not having it at all.
You know? The same thing happened to someone that asked on another forum asking if Sleeping Beauty came with the original 1959 Spanish track. And because it doesn´t he´d just skip the movie entirely. Then I told him that it didn´t make sense. I do understand wanting to have the movie with the audio track that you got to know all your life (especially since it was a great one and the new is really bad). However, in the end you just want the movie itself. I kind of understand the whole thing of don´t wanting to read subtitles...but come on. If you were a kid ok. But you´re an adult. You mean to tell me you rather not watch/own a movie that you want just because you´d have to watch it with subtitles?

Re: Diamond Line vs non labeled releases
We should be grateful that Disney don't region lock their DVDs/BDs so at least we can import. If you don't mind buying second hand then get the old releases with the extras. I personally buy lots of mine second hand as they cost half the price. I don't get the movie reward code but DMR UK is pretty crap right now.DC Fan wrote:But, let´s just say I get them.

I don't know how I'd feel about this as I've never had to deal with a re-dub. The English soundtrack never gets replaced. I can understand where the other person is coming from as you grow up with these voices and to have them change could be very upsetting. If they did a new English dub I think I would likely boycott the release. The voices are very important in making the film what it is.DC Fan wrote:You know? But I think its really great that you can still find a way to enjoy the films you love.
Re: Diamond Line vs non labeled releases
I´m really surprised that Disney didn´t Region locked most of their movies. However, not all of them are:
-Snow White (Diamond)
-Pinocchio (Platinum)
-Fantasia (Special Ed.)
-Dumbo
-Bambi (Platinum)
-Alice in Wonderland
-Sleeping Beauty (Platinum)
-The Jungle Book (Diamond)
-Beauty and the Beast (Diamond)
-Fantasia 2000 (Especial Ed.)
-Dinosaur
-Chicken Little
-Meet the Robinsons
-Bolt
-The Princess and the Frog (Combo Pack)
All those were Region locked.

Re: Diamond Line vs non labeled releases
Actually not fully true, Fantasia, Bambi, Alice, Beauty And The Beast & Fantasia 2000 are all Region Free.DC Fan wrote:I´m really surprised that Disney didn´t Region locked most of their movies. However, not all of them are:

Disney is awesome, and was the biggest part of my childhood.
Re: Diamond Line vs non labeled releases
On the US. In Europe don´t. I just checked them from my collection. Those are only Region B or B,C.
Re: Diamond Line vs non labeled releases
They are also region free in Europe. After TPatF Disney only released region free Blu-rays, except for the European TJB Diamond Edition.DC Fan wrote:On the US. In Europe don´t. I just checked them from my collection. Those are only Region B or B,C.
Re: Diamond Line vs non labeled releases
You mean the new releases or that they actually are?
Because mine actually say they´re Region B or Region B,Z.

Re: Diamond Line vs non labeled releases
Yeah, they sometimes marked them as region B, but all Blu-rays releases worldwide after 'The Princess and the Frog' are indeed region free (except for the European TJB Diamond Edition, as stated above). I also very much doubt that the re-release of Bambi is anything more than an exactly reprint of the Diamond Edition. Why would they re-release the film and actual PAY for a new Blu-ray master, just to take some bonus features away. They wouldn't pay to make an inferior product, that doesn't make any sense. With the 2-Disc editions it is different, because it is cheaper for them to cancel the bonus disc.
Re: Diamond Line vs non labeled releases
Thanks for the information.
Regarding the different versions...check for yourself.
Even tough in Spanish you can tell what on the disc and the amount of features.
Check the Diamond one; do click where it says VER MÁS so you can check all the content:
http://www.mubis.es/titulos/bambi-blu-ray
Now the the regular version; Making Of and Trailer:
http://www.mubis.es/titulos/bambi-blu-ray-2
BTW, funny how Disney went so cheap with the BD route. Wasn´t the whole idea of BD that we could get the movie in the best quality possible plus more than enough space to fill with Extras? So, what´s the excuse for not including them?

Re: Diamond Line vs non labeled releases
Those information can't be right. Lock at the aspect ratio they listed: 2.35:1 (like Sleeping Beauty!), while the films OAR is of course 1,37:1. According to this site, there is also no English dub, which I really don't think Disney would ever do.DC Fan wrote:Regarding the different versions...check for yourself.

I just checked amazon.es and found a picture of the back cover and from the extras listed, it looks like there is nothing missing:

You can also tell it is from the re-release, because the Diamond Edition has a different back cover:
