IT'S GOING TO BE A MUSICAL!!!!!
In his pitch to the studio, the director said he would also include most, if not all, of the Menken/Rice songs from the Broadway musical that ran for 13 years from 1994 to 2007. It will be a "straight-forward, live action, large-budget movie musical," we're told."

Okay, now I'm REALLY CONCERNED!

What was Disney THINKING??!?! At least with the upcoming Cinderella it's the 1950 animated film with some plot and character changes, but this? What is the freaking point? I mean.....why????!!! You couldn't just leave well enough alone did you??? (sighs) Well hopefully seeing Maleficent again this weekend will cheer me up.

Yes! :D I'm so glad it's going to be an adaptation of the Broadway musical. I'm tired of all these dark reimaginings of fairy tales. I hope Menken will get to write a couple of new songs for the movie.

It's not going to be an adaptation of the Broadway musical (which I was hoping for), it's going to be a live-action remake of Beauty and the Beast with the musical's songs thrown in. I've already been mad about it, I don't want to talk about it again.... :(

Really? Because the article disneyprincess linked to and quoted specifically states it's based on the Broadway musical. I'm not sure how you could come to a different conclusion.

Gosh, that's wonderful news ! Very excited to see what they could with the show in a film version.

The Phantom Of The Opera springs to mind? That was spectacular. Not the best film, but was certainly sumptuous to look at.

Now if only the The Little Mermaid live-action film that was being made was by Disney and an adaptation of the animated film. *tear* (Not that I mind a live-action take on the original tale either--I'd like both, actually. :!: )

My choices for the Beauty and the Best remake:

Beast-Ramin Karimloo or Josh Groban
Belle-Laura Osnes/Emmy Rossum/Anna Kendrick (PLEASE NO ANNE HATHAWAY! I’m getting so sick of her! )
Gaston-Hugh Jackman
Lefou-Josh Gad
Mrs Potts-Angela Lansbury

I like your choice of Hugh Jackman for Gaston and that shouldn't be too hard as he's played Gaston before but for some reason, I always pictured Nathan Fillion as a live action Gaston. It's probably because of his role as Captain Hammer in Doctor Horrible but I think he'd be a pretty good Gaston.

Hmm, could be interesting to see...At least it's good to hear actual confirmative news about this instead of only rumors.

Wasn't Emma Watson attacthed to this movie though? Wonder if she can sing...

Wouldn't it be funny if the two Beauty and the Beast films clashed on release dates, like how in 2012 we had two Snow White films each close to the release date of the other.

I actually love Josh Groban, so I wouldn't mind that casting, but I'm not sure if he's a great actor though. The funny thing is when I told my mother about this (her favorite Disney movie is Beauty and the Beast), she thought Hugh Jackman should be the Beast and I actually agree. He would be good at Gaston, too, though.

And since somebody mentioned it, Emma Watson would be great as Belle. The fact that she's so small would probably make the Beast actor look more Beast-like in comparison.

It'd be really nice if Angela Lansbury could do this. :)

Didn't Hugh Jackman play Gaston on Broadway ? He'd be perfect as Beast !

I just don't want someone simpering and just a pretty face to play Belle … she needs to be dynamic and full of life ! Not an Emmy Rossum as Christine or Elle Fanning as Aurora jobby ….

Not on Broadway but in a production that was in Melbourne, Australia. Though, I do know that Donny Osmond played Gaston on Broadway.

I think Emilie de Ravin would be a great choice as Belle, she is a great Belle in Once Upon a Time, but I don't know if she can sing...

NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO
There is strong speculation in the media that Kristen Stewart is expected to take up the role of Belle in the new Disney movie which will be directed by "Twilight: Breaking Dawn" director Bill Condon.

According to Hollywoodlife.com, Kristen Stewart is the top choice to play the lead role in the movie as director Bill Condon is quite impressed with her work in another Disney inspired movie "Snow White and the Huntsman."

"The process and the script for the movie are still in the beginning stages but as it fleshes out, Bill Condon has definitely thought of Kristen Stewart as a possible Belle," a source close to the actors revealed to the Web site.
