Disney Animation on Blu-ray in 2014

I'd like to say that I'm looking forward to Aladdin on Blu-Ray, seeing as how it's my most favorite Disney film of all time, but judging from how The Lion King and Beauty and the Beast were released on Blu-Ray, I'm sure this is going to be the Special Edition version as well. Granted for a Special Edition, the 2004 DVD release really had the least noticeable changes to it aside from Disney's "restorations" consisting of making the film's colors really bright. A lot of the noticeable changes were really in the audio department, such as muting that infamous line from Aladdin that sounded like "Teenagers, take off your clothes!", and adding some extra rambling from Genie over "A Whole New World" at the very end of the credits (which, as much as I love Genie, was unnecessary). Still, when it comes to Disney's "Big Four" of their renaissance, I do prefer to be authentic and want to watch them the way they were originally released. Oh well, I guess that's why I bought these movies on LaserDisc off of eBay recently.

Aside from that, I'd probably be interested in Fun and Fancy Free.

Ugh, I hate that Mr. Toad and Bongo aren't shown at all. Those make great covers for "Sleepy Hollow" and "Mickey and the Beanstalk", but not for the package films. There's Jiminy of course, but that hardly counts.

If you are a member of the Disney Movie Club, it appears that Tarzan and Hercules will be available on 6/10! I pre-ordered mine last night!

If it ends up like the European release, on the positive side it retains most (if not all) the extras from the Platinum DVD. On the negative side it doesn´t add absolutely anything new.

As far as other disappointing BD releases (Tarzan, Hercules, Hunchback...) I seriously won´t EVER get how hard is it for Disney to port every single Extras ever made plus adding several new and relevant ones.

I know in Australia they did away with the notion of 'collector's edition', 'diamond edition' and generally value packed edition because their market research revealed that the #1 demographic (parents) just wanted BARGAINs. So they purposefully removed any prestige in cover art design to make it look like a bargain-type release, whilst retaining the same price tag. "Diamond edition? This looks expensive. I'll wait for the bare bones version" (which of course was never released, and then the title was vaulted).

This sort of thinking probably leads to Disney actively deciding not to port bonus features in some cases.

Silly, because bonus features are the company's best advertisement, converting casual fans to die-hard fans.

Still...

1. There HAS TO BE an incentive for the Diamond line in terms of extras because as the successor of the Platinum the whole concept behind it was the restored image, the new mix sound AND the extras.

2. Ok, let´s say they don´t make new extras because of costs... Do you really think it is that hard or expensive to just port the extras released over the Laserdiscs and previous DVDs?

And, let´s just say we give up. No extras whatsoever. Then, at least have the decency of selling the movies at what they´re worth without them.

I have a question..
I'm a BIG fan of blu-rays and I collect them. If you're over at the blu-ray.com forum, you'll probably recognize me.

So I noticed that Tarzan and Hercules are coming out early on the DMC. So I was wondering... should I join the DMC? most of my blu-rays are Disney, and I just want to get them as soon as they come out. Most of the time, I don't focus on the price. I mean, if it was over $24 I would worry, but if it's under that, then I'm fine. I think it's because I'm obsessed with slipcovers and if I wait, then I'll have to get one from eBay for a higher price. :S

What do you guys think?

It's a pretty good deal in my book. I would join if Disney had a similar program in Europe.

I guess it also depends on how many movies you still need.

I live in Spain and so far I only need 4 movies that are available on BD. Aside from that, just wait for 3 others to get released.

So, if I were in that situation I´d stop to think if it is worth it to join at this point.

I'm happy it's not since it is a money saver. Most likely content would be the same separately or not.

So, I got Lilo & Stitch and Treasure Planet on BD yesterday in Spain. And from the looks of it, Disney gave us another unworthy product.

Lilo seems to be the exact same first DVD edition; of course a shame since there was the Special Edition that had those extras. However, we all know Treasure Planet edition on DVD, without a single labeling, ended up having quite the extras. Well, seems to be that Disney dropped them entirely for this release.

Why, Disney? WHY?!

The worst part of it all is how Disney expects (and gets away) with charging full price for these BDs; the prices are (if you take them as they are) 18,99; however, if you convert from euros to dollar $25.00 for a barebones disc. Especially when you can get the already extremely nice video and audio transfer full with all the extras for $13.00.

At least I got to buy them at a special price of 12,00 euros (18,00 by the conversion) that´s not bad at all for them.

And I think I´ll be taking advantage of this and get 2 more. But I´m struggling.

I know for sure I want Oliver and Company because I need the movie for a review for a site. However, this is my chance to get my most hated Home in Range for cheap and the same goes for Chicken Little (especially this one since I barely see it on stores and when I do is at full price).

Anyways, with all these released we just need: The Many Adventures of Winnie Pooh, Winnie Pooh and The Great Mouse Detective to have them all. Those and The Black Cauldron.

Meh. I'm probably one of the biggest fans of Hunchback around here and I think that Steelbook is grade-a ugly. I all ready posted my thoughts about it on the Blu-ray.com forum's thread for it, so, I'll just copy what I said there: "I've been following these Zaavi releases closely, but haven't wanted to spring for any of them. Hunchback is my all-time favorite Disney film (and animated film in general), so, I was very excited to see it was going to get a steelbook. I would have SO imported this, but, DAMN, is that art ugly. It's sad that the American substandard 2-Movie Collection has classier art. Sadly, I won't be purchasing this. They could have done something really classy, like the theatrical poster art from '96 depicting the cast at the Feast of Fools, with Frollo looming ominously and the back could have used the art from that very classy poster depicting Quasimodo, in silhouette, closing the door of the cathedral with the stained-glass shining beautifully down upon him... Instead...we get the U.S. VHS cover from '97 touched up a bit and a bunch of clip-art. Lame."

They took the ONE thing I always loved about that old VHS cover (Frollo looming above the title) and removed that, so, yeah. I think it could have been SO much better. Their Steelbook of Hercules is GORGEOUS. (And used a lot of the original theatrical poster art!)

I think the clip art used on those villain covers are simply horrible. Really tacky - they just look cheap and lazy. And considering what beautiful animation can be found in those movies, it's quite sad really.

What about using Lady Tremaine from C3? That's the worst thing ever.
