Re: Maleficent (2014): Official Discussion

I was not able to see the sneak peak, but it`s alright. I want to avoid any form of spoilers as possible. If I know something ahead of time, I get all analytic. (Heck, when the Rotoscopers first revealed Hans to be a major character, we speculated he was a villain. This was 9 months before the release of Frozen)

So this is all I can speculate from the information I have so far:

1) Maleficent has an attachment to Aurora. This can easily be justified considering that neither in the original cartoon nor fairy tale Maleficent hates Aurora. She just has beef with King Stephan

2) In the original narrative, Maleficent is shunned due to her practice of dark magic, but in this version there is a cultural gap rather than a moral gap between Maleficent and Stephan. Stephan wants to expand his kingdom through war while Maleficent prefers preserve her habitat

3) This...this..This is the Naussica version of Sleeping Beauty. A combination of my animation film favourites :o

I couldn't agree more! I enjoy Elle Fanning but for "Sleeping Beauty" she is terribly miscast. Just awful.

This movie is so horrible in many ways and it's going to disappoint so many people rotfl

I'm really looking forward to this the more commercials I see. I don't expect it to be "good," per se, but I think I'll enjoy it for what it is. I particularly loved the commercial where you can hear Aurora asking Maleficent why she doesn't have wings (since all other fairies have them). I hope Angelina Jolie gets some kind of acknowledgement. Whatever you think of the movie, I believe she'll deliver a good performance.

I've already decided, like Tim Burton's Alice in Wonderland, that this update of Sleeping Beauty is not going to be any bit as cool as the original. However, I am enticed to see it for curiosity's sake.

Look at the blurb Disney emailed to members of the UK DMR service:

Take home the classic tale of a snubbed malevolent fairy who casts a curse on a princess that only a prince can break with the help of three good fairies.

I like how their pitch of the movie has changed …. !

I really like that one shot where you see a castle in the distance and a great green energy stream heading up to the clouds. Reminds me of Maleficents transformation in a dragon :)

Also, this website claims PG 2 hours 15 min. Hmmm :?

Also, a new clip revealing that Aurora pricking her finger is indeed when Maleficent is trying to reach the castle to stop the curse, the curse has a life of its own and Mal can't stop it anymore, Diaval turns into her horse and Maleficent already brings the prince (who is not awake) to the castle).

They really are giving away almost the entire movie :/

Great clip! That ought to please the fans of Sleeping Beauty. Oh did you notice that in the featurette the ruins that Maleficent wanders in and the green ball that lures Aurora in the room of destroyed spinning wheels? I sure did! :D

BTW: The official running time is still 97 minutes and 13 seconds.

I went to Disneyland today, and saw the 15 minute preview offered there. In a big screen, in 3D.... the works.

It didn't help me decide whether I want to see the movie or not. I saw a few pros and cons:

Biggest pro: Angelina Jolie actually does a GREAT job with the character (and I had my SERIOUS doubts!)

Mild pro: the christening scene is almost verbatim from the animated classic.

Mild pro: Maleficent in dragon form (I assume it's her. There WAS a dragon in the preview) looks pretty good.

Major con: the three fairies are COMPLETELY computer generated. And felt fake to me. And it could have EASILY been done with real actors.

Mild con: the general over use of CG, with goblins and creatures of all sorts.

The preview didn't reveal many other plot points.

You know they did use real actors, don't you? Imelda Staunton, Lesley Manville and Juno Temple are the actresses that play the fairies. They just used CGI to give them fairy proportions.

Also, they do appear as complete human size at one point in the movie so im guessing they can change size, just like in the original movie.

According to one of the people who worked in the special effects department: "Imagine smaller versions of the Red Queen from Alice". They must've filmed all three of them on wires and in costume, then used CG on them to appear smaller in the film.

from the production notes:
“The Pixies are a good example. For part of the movie, they are actually just two and a half feet tall and they fly around. But we have these wonderful actresses bringing their humor and personalities to the roles and I can be sitting there watching them perform and completely forget they’re saying their lines dangling at the end of a wire, wearing outfits that look like space suits with all these painted dots on their faces.”

For Villegas and his team, creating those pixie characters was one of the biggest challenges on the film. “We have these brilliant actresses who are playing those characters and we want to make sure that every nuance of their performance comes out in their character because the characters are 21 inches tall and they’re very quick, like bumble bees; they’re able to move very quickly and bounce around very abruptly. So we knew that we were going to need to create them entirely as computer generated characters.” Villegas and his team used performance capture for the three Pixies (Imelda Staunton, Lesley Manville , Juno Temple ) when they were in their original 21” tall size in order to capture all the talented actresses’ subtleties. The visual effects team used 150 markers on each of their faces to track their facial expressions into computer generated characters. These fun characters were slightly caricatured in their 21” size, with larger heads, bigger eyes and their natural figures exaggerated.

Moors scene just comes off as really cheesy with the music, the primary "change" in the setting just being lighting and the rejected Chronicles of Spiderwick designs that replaced the Goons looking sad.
