I would understand if Jennifer Lee had said that since she joined the project late in the game but this coming from Peter del Vecho who was already on board when Menken was still attached is a bit insulting.

Agreed.

It's so disrespectful towards Menken. I hate how he's been shoved aside. And when Menken at the D23 concert said he was honored that Lasseter asked him to work on Tangled I almost vomited. Lasseter should be kissing the ground Alan walks on, not the other way around.

For one side, I can understand why that would be wince-inducing but on the other side, I still think that while I love Alan Menken's work in musical cinema; he is still a man, not a god. That title goes to Richard Rodgers in my mind.

I actually ask for help. Two years ago, I found a music video on Youtube. It was a medley from Alan Menken and Hans Zimmer songs from The Little Mermaid, Beauty and the Beast, Aladdin, The Lion King and Pocahontas.
So I was hoping that one of you guys know the video, or even someone has it. Because it really was amazing.

I found the medley again! I was a little wrong in my description since it doesn't has music from Alan Zimmer, only Alan Menken. Still, I think it's extremely beautiful and well done. Vinnie Jones is the first actor cast in ABC’s single-camera pilot Galavant, a comedy fairytale written by The Neighbors creator Dan Fogelman, with Oscar-winning composer Alan Menken attached to write the music. Produced by ABC Studios, Galavant centers on handsome Prince Galavant and his quest for revenge over the king who stole his one true love. Jones will play Gareth, King Galahad’s badass, scary Scottish henchman.

Well, now Alan has every chance he can have with this upcoming show since it will use many songs. That Emmy will have his name on it.

But what was so interesting is that Howard Ashman was convinced to move to California by Katzenberg because of two things: One, it was a chance to do some great work for Disney and the second reason was that Ashman was looking for other projects that had absoultely nothing to do with theatre because Smile had flopped because of creative compromises that ruined his original vision on that show.

His wit, clever use of rhyme and wordplay, and interestingly, his hidden references to old Broadway musicals from the 20's is something of a true talent that we may never find ever again. But there are some lyricists out there after Ashman's time, that truly come so very close.

Ashman was, and still is, one of the rare gifts that we were all so lucky to have on this planet, even if it was for a short while.

ABC has picked up Galavant!

Dan Fogelman (Crazy, Stupid, Love; Tangled; Cars) teams up with Broadway and Hollywood’s award-winning musical team — composer Alan Menken (The Little Mermaid; Beauty and the Beast) and lyricist Glenn Slater (The Little Mermaid; Tangled) — for a musical comedy fairytale of epic proportions.

Once upon a time, the dashing hero Galavant (Joshua Sasse) was a slayer of dragons, protector of the innocent, and defender of the less fortunate. But one day, the evil King Richard (Timothy Omundson) fell for Galavant’s ladylove Madalena and kidnapped her. On Madalena and King Richard’s wedding day, Galavant courageously fought his way back to the palace to rescue his love. And while this is where most fairytales end happily ever after, it’s where the tale of GALAVANT truly begins. Madalena stuns Galavant when she announces that she chooses fame, fortune, and the crown over Galavant and breaks his heart. Five years later we rejoin Galavant, heartbroken and drowning his sorrows in drink. Having given up on heroics, he’s a bit out of shape and flat broke. But his faithful squire Sid sees a momentous opportunity when Princess Isabella of Valencia arrives in search of “The Great Galavant.” She asks him to save her kingdom from its evil invader… none other than King Richard himself. Galavant must get back in the saddle, literally and figuratively, to take revenge on his nemesis, win back Madalena, and restore his “happily ever after.” But our fallen hero doesn’t realize that Isabella might not be revealing the whole story…

Our hero’s quest for redemption will have many twists and turns along the way. And as one of the songs from Menken and Slater proclaims: “Huzzah And Tally-Ho! Sit Back And Here We Go!”

Great news! Will definitely be watching. I really hope it gets Menken his EGOT--he deserves it. And I actually think he stands a chance with this. Even if the show isn't very good, the idea of musical television is still pretty rare outside of Glee and Smash (both which were thriving and in their prime quite a while ago now...), and I believe the awards will try to award the show for that. More importantly, fairy tales are definitely the hot commodities right now.

I just hope the show will have a (complete) soundtrack.

I actually like Glenn Slaters lyrics, and as Menken have said: Slater is his favorite collaborator after Ashman passed away. That alone has to count for something.
