Re: Maleficent (2014): Official Discussion
Well I have some bad news. According to this thread on IMDB: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1587310/boa ... /229338935 the running time will be 98 minutes.... Well, I hope that the pacing in those minutes is great and that there is a lot in this movie.
EDIT: But then again.... How did the "cousin" manage to see the film before the cast and crew does (which is May 8th)? You know what, I'm going to take this with a grain of salt until Disney confirms the running time.

Re: Maleficent (2014): Official Discussion
I don't like the CGI look of the fairy kingdom, but the rest of the sets are pretty stunningly beautiful.Musical Master wrote:BTW, when seeing the new pictures did you like the fact that a good amount of the sets for this film are half pratical/half CG? I sure did, it reminds me of Lord of the Rings and how that series made their sets.
There should be certain, important elements kept to call something an adaptation of that story. I find one of the most important parts to be missing (the prince waking her up, the original's romantic true love power, not this movie's different true love). And actually the characters are not true to the original. The good fairies for starters, King Stephen, and even the title character never becomes the Mistress of All Evil.Sicoe Vlad wrote:Why? I mean, yeah, the story was changed in some places, but the characters (except the good fairies) seem to be faithful to the original.Disney Duster wrote: Maleficent does not have what it takes to be called an adaptation of Sleeping Beauty.

Re: Maleficent (2014): Official Discussion
Frozen is not an adaptation of the Snow Queen, like it or not. Disney had wanted to produce the Snow Queen, but even the filmmakers agree that the story had changed so much, that when all is said and done, it's _inspired_ by the story.
Nobody at Disney appears to be claiming that Maleficent is a remake of Sleeping Beauty, let alone a live action adaptation of it. They created a beginning and an ending (as well as a middle) that has far less in common with Sleeping Beauty than what it does have in common. In fact, the first featurette went out of its way to explain it's a re-interpretation of the classic fairy tale and while there are some elements you should expect, much of it is quite different.
Also Disney has been pretty vocal that they want to emphasize that despite the CGI seen in the Moors, there were substantial sets built. From the production notes:

Also Disney has been pretty vocal that they want to emphasize that despite the CGI seen in the Moors, there were substantial sets built. From the production notes:
'We built a lot of sets. About 40 sets, from a 12-foot square room to the 5,000 square foot Great Hall. They’re quite complicated sets, architecturally and technically. It is the whole gamut of design from picturesque northern European landscapes to stark examples of castles, to quintessential fairytale cottages.'
As well as the human kingdom, Freeman and Cole built a large fairy kingdom on the backlot at Pinewood, which encompassed a waterfall, a river valley, a beautiful, lush flower meadow and a waterway, which links to the fairy mound, a key part of the movie
'We created, on stage, another version of our fairytale world that could be lit as a night scene. Everything has been built. Obviously for the smaller greens we bring in flowers and bushes to scale. But the trees are based on ancient oaks that we researched that are 800‐year‐
olds. We wanted to give it an Arthur Rackham look. A sense of curve and movement but to your eye you would look at it and think that it is a
real tree, except it’s made from plaster and foam.'
Then again I sometimes feel like it's a case of protesting too much. They tried this with Oz the Great and Powerful too but not really sure anyone bought it.Aurora’s world was another environment the designers had to build, consisting of a real thatched-roof cottage in a non-magical forest.
...
The thatched cottage that became Aurora’s childhood home was built from the ground up on the backlot of Pinewood Studios. The cottage
features a timber frame and an authentic thatched roof that was hand-done by traditional thatchers.

Actually bradk, I remember an interview that Sam Raimi wanted the actors to be in practical sets, so they constructed some but not as much as Maleficent.

Unless the filmakers of Frozen said "it's not an adaptation of The Snow Queen", I will still think it is one.

“Inspired by” means exactly that. There is snow and there is ice and there is a Queen, but other than that, we depart from it quite a bit.

Does anyone know whatever happened to Peter Capaldi? Last time I checked he was listed among the cast, but checking back again, I noticed he's gone.
Did he drop out of the movie because of being the new Doctor?

I think he and Richardson's characters are cut from the final film. They did re-shoot the opening.Kraken Guard wrote:Does anyone know whatever happened to Peter Capaldi? Last time I checked he was listed among the cast, but checking back again, I noticed he's gone.

You know, you guys had some good points. Maybe this can be called an adaptation of Sleeping Beauty. But I think it is really this: Disney's Sleeping Beauty seen through the eyes of it's villain...but messed up, lol.
He didn't say "and so it's not an adaptation". And that's only one person who produced the film. I want to hear that all of them agreed it was not an adaptation.Fflewduur wrote:Disney Duster wrote:Unless the filmakers of Frozen said "it's not an adaptation of The Snow Queen, I will still think it is one.“Inspired by” means exactly that. I know, it's too bad... Oh and here's another "exclusive trailer".Kraken Guard wrote:They cut out the Doctor!Musical Master wrote: I think he and Richardson's characters are cut from the final film. They did re-shoot the opening.

BTW: I highly doubt that it's the "final trailer".

not only is that not likely to be a final trailer (at a whopping 1 minute) but it's also not new. It was first posted around a couple of weeks ago along with a couple of other videos.
but speaking of new...

neither are adaptations but I suspect you'll never change your mind about it anyway, so I won't bother.Disney Duster wrote:You know, you guys had some good points. correcting myself. Turns out there are two different ones with the opening animation sequence that I never bothered to actually watch. The first is called True Maleficent Light and the other is True Maleficent Dark.bradk wrote:not only is that not likely to be a final trailer (at a whopping 1 minute) but it's also not new. The running time will indeed be 96:22 (24fps) / 92:31 (25fps). THe movie was rated in Germany for 6 years and older with the running time included to this information.
