Top 100 Animated Films as voted by people in the industry

Post by BK »

Thought this might be of interest here.

http://www.timeout.com/newyork/film/the ... ies-100-91

Also, since the Disney/Pixar voters are anonymous, anyone want to try figuring out who's who?

http://www.timeout.com/newyork/film/the ... -creatives

If we assume despite their anonymity that they would not include their films, then Pete Docter would be one of the final three.

I'm going to go with his #1 being Pinocchio in list six.

The list which has #1 Frozen #2 Wreck It Ralph- I'm going to assume that's Jennifer Lee. I love the films but that's a ridiculous top two and reeks of abuse of anonymity in list ten.

Anonymous three, also with #1 Pinocchio could be Howard or maybe Scanlon or Rae. I think Rae.

The Last Unicorn isn't there, therefore this list isn't valid for me.

The list was good except I scratched my head with the inclusion of Robin Hood. It is an ok movie but not to the standards of Disney classics like Snow White or Beauty and the Beast. Also, quite a few good animated films are missing on this list. I will list them below.

The Land Before Time
An American Tail
All Dogs Go to Heaven
Anastasia
The Prince of Egypt
Antz
A Boy Named Charlie Brown
Batman The Mask of the Phantasm
Wallace & Gromit: The Curse of the Were-Rabbit
The Ant Bully
Surf's Up
The Tale of Despereaux
The Polar Express
Curious George
Flushed Away
Over the Hedge
Beowolf
The Looney Looney Looney Bugs Bunny Movie
Bugs Bunny's 3rd Movie: 1001 Rabbit Tales
Daffy Duck's Quackbusters
The Last Unicorn
Charlotte's Web
Shrek
Shrek 2
Puss in Boots
Corpse Bride
Monsters Vs. Aliens
Megamind
Despicable Me
Despicable Me 2
The Adventures of Tintin
Arthur Christmas
Cars
Happy Feet
Robots
The Pirates! Band of Misfits
Rise of the Guardians
The Croods
Mr. Peabody & Sherman
Spririt: Stallion of the Cimarron
Ice Age
Rio
Monster House
Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs
Frankenweenie
A Bug's Life
The Rescuers
The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh
Mulan
Tarzan

I love South Park, but it shouldn't be on that list.
Team America was a much better Parker/Stone effort, but of course, not animated.

Glad to see Roger made it.
That film still blows my mind.
Settling Soul mates? That is grim. And I've played Monopoly alone.

Count me in as another one who's confused by Robin Hood's appearance. it's not a bad film per se, but more memorable than Alice and Peter Pan? Something's quite off about that.

Otoh, it probably is the most memorable of the Dark Era films, alongside the Fox and the Hound. When compared to Great Mouse Detective, Black Cauldron, even Aristocats...The first two are more remembered by the mainstream audience.

Still, if it's supposed to be the most well-known, revolutionary, game-changing films that challenged the animation industry...Yeah Robin Hood does none of that. In fact it's pretty famous for its amount of stolen/stock footage.

While I'm delighted that a number of my favorites made the list (ParaNorman, Waking Life, The Iron Giant) I have to question some of these choices... Films like Peter Pan, James and the Giant Peach, Robin Hood made the cut over stuff like The Brave Little Toaster, The Land Before Time, The Hunchback of Notre Dame, The Prince of Egypt? Wallace & Gromit ranked at number #17!? And I'll say this: Frozen's inclusion (and Wreck-It Ralph's, Tangled's and The Lego Movie's) ...patently absurd.

The Lego Movie is still way too early to be incorporated into any of these "great animated movies!!!" list.

And Tangled and Frozen? Both? You can only chose one.

Uh... Good for you?

It's obvious that a lot of choices were purely political. No way in a million years is Frozen ready to be declared one of the 100 greatest animated films of all time. Its inclusion (not just that, but its ranking! Above Lion King, Aladdin, Perfect Blue, Castle in the Sky, Le Roi et l'oiseau, etc.? Really?) speaks to the politics at play in the voting process.

(Also, are theatrically released animated features the only ones eligible for inclusion on this list? Because, if not, I find it hard to believe that Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer, Dr. Seuss' How the Grinch Stole Christmas and The Year Without a Santa Claus [among others] could be excluded over such picks as Rango, How to Train Your Dragon and Wallace & Gromit...)

Tbh, I didn't open this thread until now because I assumed it would be one collective list of 9 Pixar films and Dumbo. :P

Not that those lists are much better. Looks like everybody was picking their own films for the most part.

I don't think it's necessarily "political." The article says they polled over 100 people (I counted 112 lists, though I counted rather fast), and each of them chose 10 (or less) films. They compiled the main list from those 100+ lists.

It's clear (and understandable) that each of the voters come with their own biases--some people picked all obscure films, while others picked all "classic" films, while yet others picked mostly modern CGI flicks. And then there were those that seemed to cover a wide breadth of films types. Some voted for films they worked on, others didn't. I'm sure all of the voters had quite a difficult time narrowing down their picks to 10. (I think everyone should take a look at the individual lists... They're quite interesting to look at. And most of them are MUCH more interesting than the Disney/Pixar lists posted on this page.)

Thing is, it's just 100 people. That's not exactly a large sample size. The order of the films is bound to be a little wacky, and it's probably best not to read into it all too much.

I actually think this is quite a good list, one of the best of its kind I've seen on the net. It has a few films I've never even heard of (which hardly happens when I see other lists like this). And there are a lot of notable films that I barely ever see get mentioned on these types of lists. Fehérlófia, Night on the Galactic Railroad, The King and the Mockingbird, When the Wind Blows, Mind Game, and Kirikou and the Sorceress for example. Honestly, I don't care about the order. I'm pleased to see these films mentioned at all!

As for recent films, I don't mind them being on these types of lists. If someone thinks they're good, they think they're good... Sure, their judgement may be a little clouded by excitement over something being "new," but this isn't a list for all time. It's the list for the present. Values, perception, culture... these are all constantly changing. You will never get a definitive list, so why try?

Also, I don't think there were any rules that prevented non-theatrical features from being voted on. But when people think "movies," they usually think feature films.... The TV specials you mentioned probably wouldn't be considered "movies" by a lot of people. I mean, Grinch is only 25 minutes long. Clearly, people's perceptions as to what is eligible for the list would also affect how they vote.

Peter Pan is often considered a Disney classic so I can see why it made the cut. James in the Giant Peach I was surprised myself because that film rarely gets any attention. Robin Hood, also surprised. While Robin Hood has a stellar fan base, the Disney company is not exactly a fan of the film because it was part of the Dark Ages. If this list wanted a Dark Age Disney film, they should of put The Rescuers because The Rescuers was the most successful film released after The Jungle Book and before The Little Mermaid.

The Brave Little Toaster is mainly a television film because it was released on TV first then in theaters. It has a strange release history so that is probably why it is not included. The Hunchback of Notre Dame, while it has its fan base like Robin Hood, this is another Disney film that Disney does not look very fondly on. Mainly because it is a dark and uneven in some areas because of the gargoyles (which really bring down the film's potential). I agree with The Prince of Egypt, that film was fantastic.

Tangled, Wreck It Ralph and Frozen are included because they are part of Disney's new renaissance. All of them were successful for various reasons. Lego Movie, yes TOO recent. It isn't even on Blu-Ray or DVD yet.

Count me in as another one who's confused by Robin Hood's appearance. it's not a bad film per se, but more memorable than Alice and Peter Pan? Something's quite off about that.

I agree, Robin Hood I don't think should of been on this list. The only Dark Age Disney film I would include on this list is The Rescuers because of how significant it was when it was first released (people have forgotten about this). The Rescuers was the highest grossing Disney film after The Jungle Book. The Little Mermaid changed that record years later.

+1 to ce1ticmoon’s post.

It’s not a definitive list, it’s an aggregate of responses from the people polled. Asking for one’s 10 “Best” is going to provide utterly subjective results. If Robin Hood made the cut and The Rescuers didn’t, it’s because more of the set of respondents have more positive thoughts-impressions-memories of Robin Hood than they do for The Rescuers. How much money it made, whether or not it was “Dark Age”—these things don’t appear to play any part in the process. And there’s nothing wrong with that.

It’s a fascinating perspective on the opinions of a well-informed and highly-invested set of folks, and I dig the fact there are so many titles included with which I’m unfamiliar.

It does seem a bit weighted towards more recent films. That’s not just about media saturation or freshness of impressions, it’s about sheer *quantity*—Dreamworks, for example, has put out more films in less than 20 years than the Disney studio did during its first 50 years of existence; even excluding the associated stop-motion ventures like Nightmare and Giant Peach and the ToonDisney theatrical releases, Disney’s almost exactly matched its first half-century’s output in the less-than-three-decades since.

Good point. Just comparing the 90s to the last decade or so, there's a huge difference. Just looking at the US, in the 90s, there was Disney releasing approx. 1 film per year, an occasional Don Bluth film, and another animated family film here and there. Pixar and Dreamworks entered the picture during the 90s, but at that point they were still finding their footing and didn't release films at the fast pace they do now.

Now, if you look at the last decade, there is Walt Disney Animation, Pixar, Dreamworks, Blue Sky, Sony Pictures Animation, Illumination Entertainment all basically releasing 1 (or more in the case of Dreamworks) film per year. Then you have other smaller studios like LAIKA.

It's probably the same deal in other countries as well. Ever since the 70s, Japan has always been releasing a lot of animated films, but the market seems more saturated than ever now.
