Question about Disney Movie Club

Post by unprincess »

so I was wondering, if you join the club can you choose b/w dvd or blu ray or do they only let you pick one format? I read on their site that if you join as a blu ray member you can pick dvds but they cost you the same price as a blu ray?

You can pick either format. As far as I know, the only way that a DVD will cost you the same as the Blu is if it's the same movie but you're picking between Blu-ray/DVD Combo or DVD/Blu-ray Combo. One of those examples would be like how they released A Bug's Life in both a Blu-ray/DVD and DVD/Blu-ray combo. Disney Movie Club has both options, and they're both listed for the same price. You don't have to just buy Blu-rays or just buy DVDs.

If you join as a BD member, DVD-only purchases will not go towards fulfilling your purchase commitments.

^ahhhh. Since I dont buy all my titles as blu rays it would probably be better to join as a dvd member... but then I suppose my first 5 free titles would have to be dvd format only?

there's a part of me that wants to join, & a part of me that remembers how annoying it was after I joined that Colombia House club thing back in the 90's.

Depending on your desired titles and your willingness to buy combo packs...

The Coloumbia record club was a big ol' pain, definitely. But the DMC requires far fewer purchases to fulfill one's commitment, and declining the Featured Title is pretty quick and painless for anyone with internet. I hemmed and hawed for a bit until I did the math. With the intro offer for 5 free, a sixth for $8.95, and a seventh (that counts as the first of three commitments) for $11.95, I filled in seven holes in my Disney BD collection for $20-something. The final two commitments over two years' time will total $60, but that averages out to under $10/BD for nine titles. And there are regular promotions like buy 1, get any additional purchases at 50% off (which makes for awfully attractive pricing on the additional selections)...it works out to be a pretty good deal as long as you keep the final bottom line in mind. (And as long as you don't already own most of what you want--really, joining only made sense for me because I've been on a buying hiatus for about three years.)

plus the shipping, right?

it does seem like a good deal, I just need to make sure I do it the right way...

do the discs come with their slipcovers?

Shipping--it depends. The initial enrollment order includes free shipping. Subsequent orders do not, although there are frequently promotions (buy 2 get 1 free, buy 1 at regular price get additional purchases on the same order for 50% off, etc) that include free shipping.

Slipcovers--your mileage may vary. It depends on the title's popularity and how long it's been on the market. My enrollment order all came with slipcovers except for one, although a couple of them were what I imagine are less-popular titles (a couple Ghibli films among them, as well as World of Wonder, which I needed because my last calibration disc went out on loan and never came back). I've lost or recycled more slipcovers than I own, though; their attraction is lost on me.

I recommend checking out the blu-ray.com DMC discussion thread, the first two posts of which cover the general terms and a FAQ.
