The Neverending Story

Post by Angeldude98 »

I love the original 1984 film! It's one of my favorite fantasy films, and for me at least, one of the best ever done. They did a great job considering what they had available back then to achieve all the special effects they have in it. I can only imagine what a modern remake would look like (I read somewhere that they've been considering doing that for quite a while, and I hope they do as long as it's done well) with today's technology and CGI effects.

The sequels however, are another matter. Though TNES2 is pretty good, it strays from the story and some of the characters (like the dad, the Childlike Empress and Atreyu) just look too diferent. At least they kept the overall look of Fantasia and Bastian's home and neighborhood pretty much the same.

As for TNES3... I really don't know what they were thinking! Nothing is like the first film and the costumes and characters look soooooo inferior! The story wasn't so bad, but they could've handled it much better!

Anyway! What do you think? Would you like to see a remake/reboot of this franchise?

I grew up with TNES film, and I've always loved it, even if it's a little cheesy. They build up the Nothing really well. I also own the book, which isn't as different as I thought it would be considering the author disliked the film.

Those sequels though... TNES2 is okay, I guess, except the actors (Sebastian's actor here also voiced Mozenrath on the Aladdin TV series, fun tidbit) and the effects/costumes are even worse. I did like the storyline of Sebastian losing his memories though.

Definitely an old childhood favorite. The special effects are AMAZING, I love seeing sets and puppetry like that. I always loved the Rock Biter puppet.

But, yeah, the sequels are pretty bad. The second one at least feels sort of the same as the first, despite nearly every character being played by a different actor. The third... is a mess lol. Except for Jack Black.
But the thing that makes Woody special, is he'll never give up on you... ever. He'll be there for you, no matter what.

The Childlike Empress fascinated me as a child. I thought she was beautiful.
I don't really remember much else of the film. I just remember being traumatized by the horse getting stuck in the mud and it being looooong.

I haven't seen it in so long that I couldn't even re-watch it through the eyes of childhood nostalgia. I'm always tempted to get this on DVD but so many of the films from my childhood don't hold up in adulthood. I hate when that happens.
Settling Soul mates? That is grim. And I've played Monopoly alone.
