I'm glad you finally got to see it on Broadway!! What an amazing journey from the first announcement of the Seattle production on your blog to seeing it on Broadway! :D

^ Review round-up that is updating live. Some positive, some mixed, some negative. Seems like a general consensus with many reviews so far is that Iglehart is high-energy and fantastic, there are great special effects and it was an audience/crowd pleaser. Also very excited that Proud Of Your Boy has been singled out in several of the reviews... it's such a special song and Adam Jacobs performs it wonderfully. :)

also, found this backstage photo from the Seattle production earlier today

Srs faces! But such a lovely photo of 'Jasmine'

Edit:

Highlights video! No singing but some interesting shots of the show

Can anyone who has seen the Broadway show explain the magic carpet scene, where they're flying over fog? It wasn't in Toronto :?

OT: Went to read those Aladdin reviews and immediately got distracted by this on the side of the page: http://www.broadwayworld.com/article/Re ... yvBzaJnGSo New Sweeney Todd performed by the New York Philharmonic...with Emma Thompson as Mrs. Lovett and Philip Quast as Judge Turpin! And it's going to be Broadcast on PBS! ...Ahem, sorry. I just get crazy passionate about Sweeney Todd. (Still haven't got the 2012 London Cast Recording with Michael Ball and Imelda Staunton yet, but I hope this one will get a CD, too. And maybe a DVD release since PBS *IS* filming it.) Anyway. Sorry. Back to Aladdin!

Funny, the reaction mirrors the film's original reception all those years ago. "GENIE! GENIE! GENIE!" "The leads are pretty but boring!" "Jonathan Freeman is hella fun as the bad guy!" "GENIE! GENIE! GENIE!" "A Whole New World!" "GENIE! GENIE! GENIE!"

And now I'm thinking of a Sweeney/Aladdin crossover... "Attend the tale of Genie Todd! His lamp was small and his jokes were odd... He granted the wishes of street urchins, who didn't have parents and very few friends!"

I saw the show last night (Wednesday, the 19th), and honestly, I'd give it a B-. There are plenty of things that worked great (Arabian Nights, the portrayal of Iago, Proud of Your Boy), but some things fell flat (Adam Jacobs's acting, the script, the new songs). I liked the Genie (and I liked that he didn't try to be Robin Williams), but he tried too hard for humor at times, and it was hit-or-miss. The stage effects in "Friend Like Me" are spectacular, and so is the choreography (in fact, the whole show has fantastic choreography), but that's just it. It relied too much on the pizazz, and in the process, it kind of lost the heart. I appreciate the efforts and talents of the performers and creative team, but the movie is a lot better.

LOVE the Variety review
"The magic-carpet ride is magical. The Cave of Wonders is wonderful. And yes, you’ll hear the tunes you loved in the 1992 movie. But the notion that “Disney Aladdin” somehow resurrects the spirit of the late Howard Ashman, who had the original inspiration for the movie and contributed most of its clever lyrics, is a joke. Restoring a person’s work without respecting his artistic sensibility is no tribute at all."
I couldn't agree more! And it gets worse!

The positive ones don't seem that enthusiastic. Basically saying your kids will like it isn't much praise

Time to shut this production down and get a move on with Hunchback and Frozen!!!!!!

^^No offense: But, unlike some people here and me (I'm seeing it in May), you haven't seen this at all. Why all of the negativity? You're acting like TsWade2. :P (Sorry TsWade)

And Hunchback is on the way. It's getting its premiere this Winter, so i'm guessing it will open around Fall 2015-Spring 2016. It all depends on the reception like how The Jungle Book was. And Frozen is not coming anytime soon. It JUST opened. :P And Bob Iger and the directors of the movie said that they're taking their time with it. So, expect around 2016 at the earliest (like TLK & BATB) & 2021 at the latest. It could take 20 years like Aladdin, who knows?

It's best to ignore them. They've been declaring the show a "piece of crap" to be closed down (despite, as you said, never having seen it! "I couldn't agree more!" indeed) since before it even opened in Toronto previews. And now, of course, any positive reviews aren't "really" enthusiastic, etc etc, anything to get their jollies going.

EW gave the show a B. Re: the actors... they praised Aladdin and Jafar and panned Jasmine's wobbly singing. They said the actor portrays the Genie as if he were a cross between Robin Williams and a drag queen. Sound groovy to me!

Also on the rise by 5% or more were “Kinky Boots” (1,451,463), “Aladdin” ($937,099), “Bullets Over Broadway” ($782,289), “No Man’s Land/Waiting for Godot” ($647,289). “Mamma Mia” (573,443), “The Realistic Joneses” ($433,391) and “Mothers And Sons” (248,821)

Of the new shows already open, “Aladdin” crept closer to that threshold as well, earning $937,099 in its first full week after opening to mixed-to-positive reviews.

Aladdin, the new Disney musical at the New Amsterdam, couldn't do better this week than it had been doing — that is, sell-out houses since beginning previews. So the good reviews the show received upon opening March 20 didn't have much of an immediate impact. Crowds were still at capacity, and the box-office collection was 80% of the potential. In future, however, the latter number will likely go up, as will the average ticket price.

Disney’s recent opener “Aladdin” ($1,104,798) topped $1 million for the first time, and the family-friendly title is said to have amassed an advance of some $15 million

Recent opener “Aladdin” ($1,170,038), propelled by upbeat reviews and its family-friendly title, was one of the few shows to uptick last week.

Idina Menzel’s fans are following her to “If/Then,” the Broadway musical which drew lackluster reviews but earned a healthy $931,268 at the box office in its first full week of post-opening performances. The show didn’t cross the million-dollar-a-week threshold, however; the season’s only new musical to reach that mark is Disney’s “Aladdin,” which grossed $1,170,038 last week, according to a Broadway League report. Also bringing in the crowds: the revival of “Les Misérables,” which grossed $1,153,829 and joined “Aladdin” and “If/Then” in the box office top 10.

Right up there with these high priced shows is none other than Aladdin, at an average secondary market ticket price of $287.67. However, Aladdin was able to do something that not even The Lion King could last week—completely sell out. This marks the sixth consecutive week that Aladdin has sold out, suggesting that it could be more Lion King than Cinderella, and a potential breadwinner for Broadway over the summer months.

After a highly successful first month on Broadway, Aladdin tickets look to be on their way to a regular spot atop the weekly gross leaderboard. The show premiered on Broadway in limited release on February 26 and officially opened up at the New Amsterdam Theater on March 20. Since its inaugural show, Aladdin has increased its box office gross in every week. In fact, in what was a week of declining receipts for Broadway, Aladdin was the only show in the top 12 highest grossing shows of the week to increase its take over the previous week. This was enough for Aladdin to surpass Les Miserables and become the fifth highest grossing Broadway show of the week. Aladdin tickets continue to rise in price, and could soon cross over the $300 barrier to join The Book of Mormon tickets ($325.86) and Kinky Boots tickets ($328.07) among Broadway’s most popular shows on the secondary market.

Here are the average secondary market ticket prices for the Top 10 Highest Grossing Shows of last week:

Wicked – $297.32
The Lion King – $253.72
The Book of Mormon – $325.86
Kinky Boots – $328.07
Aladdin – $287.67 (limited quantity)
Les Miserables – $224.48
Matilda – $240.17
Motown the Musical – $344.36
If/Then – $260.84
All The Way – $212.19

Have any of Disney's shows been well-received by critics before anyway (if any, I'm thinking Aida or TLK stand the best chances)? I always thought Broadway kind of sneered at Disney shows, but they do well anyway because of the draw of family audiences/tourists. That's why mixed reviews seems like a good sign to me.

To the best of my recall only The Lion King received universally rave reviews and indeed won the Tony for Best Musical of the 1997-1998 theater season.

I agree with carolinakid--from the published critical reviews I've found online, only The Lion King seems to have gotten mostly critical praise with occasional mixed reviews. (I didn't find any negative but I'm sure they're out there, too.) The original Broadway production of BATB got criticisms that are almost carbon copies of what some critics have said about Aladdin--there is spectacle but not enough nuance/complexity, that the score is excellent but the book isn't serious enough, that there is one actor shining above the rest (Terrance Mann in BATB and James Monroe Iglehart in Aladdin) and so on. It's funny reading those reviews because nowadays, can find almost nothing but praise for the original show, from its detailed costumes to the gothic sets to Egan & Mann's nuanced portrayals of Belle & Beast, to the "rich, dark complexity" of the show versus the tone of the current Networks tour. Go figure!

The reviews for Aladdin are a lot more positive and mixed-positive than they were in Toronto, which were primary negative, mixed-negative with a scattering of positive critical reviews. It seems that many of the bigger critically noted issues from Toronto (Jasmine's song, the trio as narrators, etc) were revamped or at least tweaked which likely helped the reception.

I also wanted to share two pictures of Opening Night's curtain call that I found online!

I wrote a comment on the Aladdin - The Musical Facebook page on the lack of any Jafar/Jonathan Freeman promotion and got an answer from the page:

"Why are you not promoting Jafar at all? When you got Jonathan Freeman himself playing the part he originated in Aladdin, it seems like such a waste not to highlight him in your promotion." They responded: "We still have some tricks up our sleeves. Stay tuned."
