Aladdin, the new Disney musical at the New Amsterdam, couldn't do better this week than it had been doing — that is, sell-out houses since beginning previews. So the good reviews the show received upon opening March 20 didn't have much of an immediate impact. Crowds were still at capacity, and the box-office collection was 80% of the potential. In future, however, the latter number will likely go up, as will the average ticket price.

Idina Menzel’s fans are following her to “If/Then,” the Broadway musical which drew lackluster reviews but earned a healthy $931,268 at the box office in its first full week of post-opening performances. The show didn’t cross the million-dollar-a-week threshold, however; the season’s only new musical to reach that mark is Disney’s “Aladdin,” which grossed $1,170,038 last week, according to a Broadway League report. Also bringing in the crowds: the revival of “Les Misérables,” which grossed $1,153,829 and joined “Aladdin” and “If/Then” in the box office top 10.

Right up there with these high priced shows is none other than Aladdin, at an average secondary market ticket price of $287.67. However, Aladdin was able to do something that not even The Lion King could last week—completely sell out. This marks the sixth consecutive week that Aladdin has sold out, suggesting that it could be more Lion King than Cinderella, and a potential breadwinner for Broadway over the summer months.
After a highly successful first month on Broadway, Aladdin tickets look to be on their way to a regular spot atop the weekly gross leaderboard. The show premiered on Broadway in limited release on February 26 and officially opened up at the New Amsterdam Theater on March 20. Since its inaugural show, Aladdin has increased its box office gross in every week. In fact, in what was a week of declining receipts for Broadway, Aladdin was the only show in the top 12 highest grossing shows of the week to increase its take over the previous week. This was enough for Aladdin to surpass Les Miserables and become the fifth highest grossing Broadway show of the week. Aladdin tickets continue to rise in price, and could soon cross over the $300 barrier to join The Book of Mormon tickets ($325.86) and Kinky Boots tickets ($328.07) among Broadway’s most popular shows on the secondary market.
Here are the average secondary market ticket prices for the Top 10 Highest Grossing Shows of last week:
Wicked – $297.32
The Lion King – $253.72
The Book of Mormon – $325.86
Kinky Boots – $328.07
Aladdin – $287.67 (limited quantity)
Les Miserables – $224.48
Matilda – $240.17
Motown the Musical – $344.36
If/Then – $260.84
All The Way – $212.19
