Disney snow globe sparks blaze

A Disney toy set fire to a girl's bedroom by acting as a magnifying glass for the sun's rays.

The souvenir glass ball, bought from Disneyland Paris, caused thousands of pounds damage to a house in the Midlands.

The sphere, a glitter snowstorm which has Disney princess characters inside, was sitting on eight-year-old Jessica Errington's bedroom window ledge.

But with the sun's rays passing through it, it created a beam hot enough to set fire to a toy Beanie Bear lying nearby.

Jessica's curtains were badly damaged in the fire and her carpet also caught fire, leaving her family with a clean-up bill running at more than £4,000.

Today Jessica's grandfather, businessman Trevor Forrester, warned other families not to leave similar items in direct sunlight.

He was astonished that the seemingly harmless souvenir, which he had bought for Jessica, could wreak such damage.

The fire broke out in the front bedroom of the house in Holyrood Close, Kingston Hill, Stafford, shortly before 4pm yesterday.

Jessica's grandmother, Christine Forrester, was there at the time and raised the alarm.

Mr Forrester said: "It was fortunate there was someone in and when the smoke and heat detector went off they were able to close the bedroom door and alert the fire brigade.

"I never had any suspicion that it could be an issue that a glass ball could concentrate heat from the sun's rays sufficiently to start a fire - it is frightening.

"The big Beanie Bear just burst into flames. My advice to anyone who has a similar glass ball is not to leave it on the window ledge."

He added that he could not emphasise enough the importance of having smoke detectors.

A web dating agency has dumped a 55-year-old male subscriber after he went on a five-year whoring binge. Clive Worth arranged 119 dates via DatingDirect.com. Sadly for Worth, the agency struck him from its books after receiving complaints about his "lack of commitment", even though he is very committed to not being committed.

Worth lamented: "I'm gutted about being kicked out. I've done nothing wrong. The agency said they received complaints because women were travelling to meet me and wanted commitment, but I didn't. But it's just that I haven't met the right woman yet."

Worth said he would not take the ban lying down, and pledged to join another agency and continue his tireless quest for Ms Right until he's 80.

Inflatable SpongeBob Characters Disappearing From Burger Kings

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- There is a nationwide rash of thefts of 9-foot-tall and 9-foot-wide SpongeBob SquarePants inflatables propped on the roofs of Burger Kings.

More than 50 SpongeBob-nappings have been reported from Florida to Utah since the pop icon started appearing on fast-food restaurant rooftops in a promotional tie-in with his movie Nov. 11. Employees at a Burger King near Palatka are among the latest to report the theft of the $500 balloon last weekend.

"We don't have any theories. SpongeBob SquarePants is kind of a fad. It could be a childhood prank or an adult trying to get a fad item for Christmas," Putnam County sheriff's Lt. Steve Rose said Wednesday. "If any leads come across, we will follow up in hopes of making an arrest."

As part of the promotion, 4,704 inflatable SpongeBobs weighing 50 pounds were ordered for restaurants nationwide, said a Burger King company spokesman. The animated movie and TV star brought to you by Nickelodeon is featured on Burger King children's meals, watches and toys.

The bigger-than-life sized versions of "The SpongeBob Square Pants Movie" star seem to have turned up on eBay, selling for as much as $1,000.

The use of SpongeBob SquarePants is aimed at young males, which is "the hardest market to get to," said Jim Twitchell, a professor of advertising and English at the University of Florida.

"SpongeBob is an idea character. He's not just a kiddie character. He's a transcendent icon, and the fact that he works in a fast-food place is even better," he said.

Twitchell suspects young men are behind most thefts of the famous Krabby Patty flipper.

"From a marketing point of view, stealing generates value," he said. "They will show up in fraternity houses for sure."

Burger King is not actively pursuing the missing inflatables, said a Burger King spokesman, who refused to be identified.

"At the moment, it is sort of a very amusing phenomenon. We hope it is just a prank, and the SpongeBobs come back."

Miami-based Burger King Corp. has 7,956 stores in the United States, and about 7,000 participated in the promotion. Not all of them ordered balloons.

Six ... TY beers? Man, he must have been <i>wasted</i>. It doesn't seem safe to drink that much alcohol at once, but I suppose when the only other option is to freeze to death, a hangover that's going to last a week doesn't sound like a bad alternative.
