On TV
Well, SOTS was broadcast as scheduled at 11:00 GMT this morning. The transmission lasted 94mins and 28secs from fade in to fade out. It doesn't appear to be any different to the version released on video July 2000. I'm sure when it's eventually released on DVD they will spend some time cleaning/deblobbing some frames or maybe remaster it from a better print...

Lowly all ready have according to reports (but it doesn't mean this restored version was shown on the BBC)disneyunlimited wrote:Well, SOTS was broadcast as scheduled at 11:00 GMT this morning. Re: On TV
Lowly? Do you mean Lowry Digital? I also heard Scott McQueen had done some restoration on "Song of the South", but I don't know if Lowry was involved.2099net wrote:Lowly all ready have according to reports (but it doesn't mean this restored version was shown on the BBC)disneyunlimited wrote:Well, SOTS was broadcast as scheduled at 11:00 GMT this morning. Yes, I think it's been posted on HTF somewhere.

I recorded it on dvd. I had never seen it before, but it was truly great. I was extremely impressed by the animation, stunning for a 1946 film. I can see how this one was groundbreaking and such a huge hit back then. I sure hope it will be released by Disney. The version shown on BBC wasnt even that bad of a quality.. pretty good actualy.. wasnt expecting that

Quality
Exactly! Pretty good but not up to the high standards of Disney DVD. I look forward to the Lowry Digital remastered version when it gets released... soon, I hope! The version shown on BBC wasnt even that bad of a quality.. pretty good actually..
Hey, how did you record it? Are you going to start paying a TV Licence in the future?PatrickvD wrote:I recorded it on dvd. I had never seen it before, but it was truly great. well.. with a dvd recorder... that's what they were made for right? Is it a crime? It's not like I won't buy it when it eventually gets a real release. Neither am I going to copy it and sell it to the world or whatever... just for myself2099net wrote:Hey, how did you record it? PatrickvD - I think what 2099net was asking was how did you manage to record the UK BBC2 channel if you are living in Holland!
UK residents have to pay 121 GBP a year for a TV Licence which is supposed to provide us with exclusive access to BBC 1,2,3 and 4
The signal should not be strong enough to reach Europe!

I was surprised when they added BBC to our cable line-up here. It's a welcome addition, though, especially around Christmas time. Maybe they'll air Song of the South there some time, as I get it in digital quality!

Comparison
Just did a comparison between my SOTS original PAL VHS and my DVD recording to see whether the video has the same defects as the TV broadcast. To my amazement they both suffer from motion blur, fading colours (the dreaded "vinegar syndrome") AND the irritating projectionist cue circles that keep popping up every 15 minutes! Looks like the BBCs source tape was the same as that used for mastering the video.
Hopefully Disney haven't junked the negatives and we'll see a decent transfer of this movie on DVD soon...
In the meantime, is the laserdisc any better?
