Favorite piece of Disney merchandise

Post by Jay »

Do you have a piece of Disney related merchandise that you love and really treasure? It can be something you own now or a piece of merchandise you had as a child.

My favorite piece of Disney merchandise I own is the Walt Disney Showcase Mini-bust of Rapunzel.

Image

I bought it two weeks ago from the local comic shop, Collector's Inc. I love it.

after that is a sericel from 101 dalmatians which i won from a department store when i was 11 or 12.

Hmm... that's a bit hard. I love a lot of their merchandise.

I suppose my current favorite piece would have to be the Walt Disney Classics Collection sculpture of Jafar:
Image

For years, I looked at pictures of these things online and weeped silently because I knew I'd probably never be able to afford them. I wanted Jafar and Frollo most of all. Then, as fate would have it, Disney Movie Rewards offered the above statue as one of their rewards! And I had enough points for it! I can't tell you how happy it made me. When it came in the mail, I was ecstatic. It stands about 10" tall and looks way better in person than even the pictures would have you believe. So, yeah. One of the pieces I'd wanted for years, despaired over not being able to ever afford, I was able to get for FREE. I still haven't displayed him yet, though. I'm waiting until I'm out on my own and have a place for him where he won't get broken. (I wish DMR would offer MORE of these things, by the way! Sadly, since the line's been discontinued, it probably won't happen.)

When I was a kid, my favorite Disney toy was Mattel's Evil Genie Jafar action figure:
Image
I latched onto Jafar for whatever reason as a youngster. I remember the day I found out this toy existed. I was in Wal-Mart with my parents. We were walking through the toy aisle. At the end of the aisle, there were some Aladdin figures. I looked over and saw Razoul. (He caught my eye immediately, because I had every figure that Mattel had made up to that point. And I realized I DIDN'T have Razoul.) But, then, I looked up and saw Genie Jafar and my mind was BLOWN. I remember practically SCREAMING with excitement. I flipped out. And my parents bought it for me after seeing how wild I went over it.

I'm also going to have to give a shout-out to the Burger King kid meal toys for Hunchback. That set was great. Especially the Quasimodo and Frollo figures. Those two were really well done. They even had cloth clothes and were fully pose able. I remember being very eager to complete that whole set. My grandmother helped me to get them all after I watched the movie in theaters. (My very first theater experience, by the way.) So, I had the whole cast and remember playing with them all a lot. I didn't have many of the Mattel figures from Hunchback, but I did have Frollo. (Still have him!) He was another I played with a lot. (He's showing his wear nowadays. ) I use to re-enact the 'And he shall smite the wicked' scene over and over. I was a strange child.

Mattel made really good figures back in those days. The Aladdin, Lion King, Pocahontas, Hunchback and Hercules toys were all quite good. I think they even did Peter Pan figures? I distinctly remember having a Disney Captain Hook figure that was about the same size as Jafar/Frollo/Ratcliffe... Shame they don't still make them. I would have LOVED a Mattel Dr. Facilier figure. Or a Mattel Gothel and King Candy. Disney used to care about appealing to boys, too. Now, it seems they're only after girls. Because the merchandise for Frozen has been pretty frickin' girly. ALL of the toys I've seen in Wal-Mart and Target have been in the girl aisles, next to princess dresses and sparkly tiaras. I guarantee most boys, even ones who genuinely LOVE Disney, wouldn't want to set foot in one of those aisles out of embarrassment. It's sad. The 'Princess Line' really is quite pernicious. I think it's doing more harm than good. But, anyway. Yeah. Those are my picks for favorite merch.

I must have picked this up at The Disney Store about 13-14 years ago.

Image

The rose lights up with a switch, and of course it plays music. I'm so lucky it's survived all of my moves! But as you can see, the water has slowly been evaporating out of the thing. :( It's still one of my favorite pieces though. :)

And I'm not sure if you'd count this as Disney "merchandise," but here's a scan of some signed Chris Sanders artwork I collaborated on:

Image

I had so much fun with this . . . I took his lineart, digitally colored it, printed it out on some large photo paper, and had him sign it for me at the SDCC back in 2008. I also printed a copy for him to keep (hope he liked it)! I nervously chatted with him a little bit and we shook hands. :)

We have this one too. It was VERY well done. Sadly, one of my daughters broke it earlier this year. Word of advice from one parent to another: keep this one out of reach when your little one becomes mobile. Evidently ours wasn't as far out of reach as we thought it was. :(

Tough call, but I guess I'll go with the 17" tall Cinderella's Castle that sits atop of my entertainment center.

Probably my favorite piece of merchandise that I own is this Ursula figurine which came with a gorgeous watch of her in her iconic scheming pose with F&J swirling around and a very nice tin holder with a picture of all Disney's villains in green smoke around. See first three images here.

I also the 4-lithograph set that came with the TLM VHS re-release if you ordered it through the Disney Store, of course. And of course love the lithograph for the theatrical re-release as well.

I also have other merchandise that made me so ecstatic when I first got them, but I'm lukewarm now. I really wanted this so bad when I was a child, so, while looking at it now it comes across as cheap/not that special, I still have memories of how ecstatic it was to receive in the mail when I was young:

Image

And I love nearly all my Hercules things. They were all cheap, but I was so in love with that movie when it was released, that I still remember bugging my parents to go to Burger King and McDonald's so I could get all the Titan figures and the plate set.

There are also a lot of merchandise I love that I don't own yet unfortunately. :(

A friend of mine snapped a picture of this at Theme Park Connection for me on the day that I finally picked it up. I had put it on layaway in early December; they left it in the display case with the "Sold" tag on it. Apparently between that day and this picture, many people who saw it in the case begged the folks at TPC to sell it to them at any cost, which, of course, they couldn't do. Diane told me that $500 was the highest offer they got.

Thanks RyGuy! That is a nice piece!

But Escapay's actual enchanted rose takes the cake. Just like my Cinderella storybook replica and Disney Store glass slipper replica are my favorite Disney merchandise.

What line's been discontinued? DMR or the Walt Disney Classics Collection?

I still have and love my original Davy Crockett Coonskin Cap. It was a little too big for me when I bought it at Disneyland, but I still have it and every once in a while I let my nine-year-old Grandson wear it.

My six-year-old granddaughter is collecting all of the Disney princesses and she has quite a collection. She also has Sleeping Beauty's castle which is the centerpiece of all of her characters.
The only way to watch movies - Original Aspect Ratio!!!!
I LOVE my Blu-Ray Disc Player!

As for me, it's this little guy. I've had him since I was three and we've been through a lot together. Wherever I go, he goes.

Wow, moviefan12, that little guy must be truly special. Makes me wish I still had something like that, but my always tended to get rid of old stuff to make space.

It is fantastic and it's sitting safe in it's box, ready to move. I unfortunately had to put it away a week after a bought it because of that.
