Nah, he has changed his mind about retirement many times before. I doubt he cares all that much about the Oscar.
Very true. As you can see in the vid below, Miyazaki didn't even bother showing up when Spirited Away won back in 2003. The Academy excepted the Oscar on his behalf.

I think that was also partly due to his opposition to the Iraq War that had just been declared around that time and anybody familiar with Miyazaki knows he's very anti-war.

The more I think about it, the more likely I think Frozen will win the Oscar. In addition to the high critical acclaim and yes, box office that Frozen has been receiving, I have a feeling older voters might be turned off by The Wind Rises' sympathetic portrayal of the man who designed the airplanes that bombed Pearl Harbour.

^ This so much.

That coupled with the fact that Japan has yet to apologize, or even admit to, a boatload of war crimes, I think the academy isn't going to award The Wind Rises due to its political nature. There's something off-putting about the concept to me anyway (as much as I enjoy Ghibi's films).

I think Frozen is a shoe-in for the Oscar. The moment is right.

At least Pixar won't be in the way this time.

Apparently this won't even be Miyazaki's last, either, so you can count the sympathy vote out for him.

^ I think that makes Frozen's chances more likely.

I still haven't cut Monsters University out myself. Past precedence makes it more likely it will win regardless of whether it's pretty bad.

This has to be the year for "Frozen", as I thought it was better than either "Monsters University" (which was okay) or "Despicable Me 2" (what a disappointment)!

Yeah, Frozen is going to steal the gold. Monsters University was a pretty good prequel but not a great Pixar film, DM2 was meh. So it's clear who's winning here.

Pardon, we don't even know if the latter two will get nominated for the Oscar.

There could be a chance that those 2 will be nominated, but your right. It's just guessing at this point, but the nominations will be here soon.

Monsters University couldn't even get in with 5 nominees

Kind of ridiculous considering Despicable Me 2 is utter crap and The Croods is mediocre and at best on par with Monsters University (I find it much less enjoyable and clever), but oh well hopefully Frozen wins. Haven't seen Ernest and Celestine.

Honestly I did really love Despicable Me 2 over Monsters University. I couldn't quit laughing during DM2. That's just my opinion though.

I liked DM 2, but come on, MU deserved it more, TBH. I'm shocked it got nominated.

Good luck, Frozen and Let It Go.

Hate to say it, but I really think THE WIND RISES will win the Oscar. It’s a historical biography pretty much. And the voters are always suckers for that. Frozen could win, but we know the voters. They’re political as heck.

And if Ordinary Love beat Let It Go once, they can win again :/

I think The Wind Rises has a chance, but as I said before, I think older voters (which make up a large percentage) will actually be turned off by the subject matter. It is a sympathetic portrait of the designer of Japanese WWII airplanes, after all.

I don't think Mandela will the Best Song Oscar. The Golden Globes love U2, having nominated them a bunch of times. This is only their second Oscar nomination. Disney also seems a lot more receptive to Disney songs, having given the Oscar to Man or Muppet and We Belong Together the last couple of years (both of which were not even nominated for Globes).

It's worth remembering that the HFPA is a 90-member organisation of anonymous journalists, none of whom are in the Academy. I think Let It Go is still winning Best Original Song.

I'm pretty sure that Frozen will get its Oscar but that doesn't mean I've lost hope that they will, in my opinion, make the correct decision and award it to Miyazaki for The Wind Rises. The whole political aspect of the film shouldn't be a problem because the film isn't at all pro-imperial Japan or anti-American, rather it has a strong pacifism running through it that stretches back through Miyazaki's entire filmography all the way to his debut feature Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind. In fact, Miyazaki has recently been decried as being 'un-Japanese' due to his staunch criticism of the government's proposal to scrap the constitution that renounces war - just as tensions between China and Japan increase.

Rather, what the film made me think about was the dichotomy between an idea and its application and how the latter can sometimes make one regret the former. Just a few days ago, a letter written by the late Mikhail Kalashnikov revealed his "spiritual pain" resulting from the widespread usage of his invention the AK-47 and, referring to the letter he sent Roosevelt about the possibility of nuclear weapons, Albert Einstein wrote that "Had [he] known that the Germans would not succeed in producing an atomic bomb, [he] would have never lifted a finger." In a way, for me The Wind Rises was an altogether better expression of the theme that was most famously explored by Hollywood - specifically in Steven Spielberg's Jurassic Park. For me, it was a film that had a lot more going on than Frozen. It's the work of a true master filmmaker.

Ordinary Love seems to be the new frontrunner for Best Song because people are rewarding the song in memory of Mandela (the song itself sounds like every other throw away song on every U2 album). I think it's stupid to honor U2 with an award for somebody else's achievement, but that's Hollywood for ya. It will now be a pleasant surprise if Let it Go takes the award.

I'm actually rooting for Best Song more than Animated Feature, because losing to The Wind Rises is at least losing to something else that is pretty great. I don't even like Ordinary Love on it's own as it is, but compared to Let it Go it feels even more blasé.

Oscars 2014: Nominee reactions

Frozen’s journey has gone beyond our wildest dreams. We thank the Academy for this honor and look forward to celebrating the nominations with our crew at Disney Animation today.”

- Chris Buck (director), Jennifer Lee (director), Peter Del Vecho (producer), Nominees, Best Animated Feature Film – FROZEN

“Pinch us…! We couldn’t be prouder to see our song ‘Let it Go’ receive an Oscar nomination. It’s a reflection of all the effort that went into the song from the dozens if not hundreds of people at Disney Animation who added their talents to it. We hope the song and its message of empowerment continue to spread. We are so grateful to the Academy, to our directors and producers, to Idina Menzel, and to the people all over the world who are listening (and sometimes belting along) to the music of FROZEN. Sing out!”

I'm actually fairly confident Frozen will win. I wouldn't be that shocked if it doesn't, but I don't see The Wind Rises getting much widespread attention/traction. Some of its attention has been negative for the controversial subject matter. Frozen is far and away the animated movie with the most "noise" this year, and I don't think many Academy members care about this category too much so they just check off whatever has buzz.

Original Song is more iffy but I don't think Bono is a shoo-in. The Golden Globes often pick something different in this category, usually awarding the biggest name in music out of the nominees.
