Little Mermaid limited Issue: Transfer question?

Post by jade »

This DVD came out well before the Platinum Edition so i'm curious as to what the transfer is like? Does it have the color change of the sea shells etc?

It's the same restoration as the 1998 VHS/LaserDisc. The seashells are blue, like they were originally. It was generally less bright and vibrant than the Platinum... There wasn't any alteration there like there was with the Platinum and Diamond editions.

I actually put this in to watch the other day out of curiosity. Aside from the music during the ending credits, this is the closest version to the theatrical movie that officially exists on DVD. The only bummer is that It's non-anamorphic though, so the whole movie sits inside a black box on a widescreen tv.

I'm glad I held onto it though (Came very close to giving it away when the Platinum Edition came out).

Aside from the few alterations we all know of in the DE, I think the DE is as close as it gets to the "original" version. Ironically, the 1998 transfer had more vibrant colors than the DE.

:? That doesn't make any sense.

Yes, it's just a few alterations, but they are still alterations that are not present in the Limited Edition DVD, thus making the LE closer to the original presentation than the DE.

Those were corrected though (albeit not all of them)... Anyway, I was referring more to the colors.

The "Walt Disney Pictures Presents" title being in the wrong place, and the updated "knee-less" priest are still present though, which are subjectively significant alterations to some, even if no one is loosing sleep over them like the (thankfully corrected) mistakes made to the DE editing.

I do agree that colors are better in the Diamond Edition though.

Can someone list each of the changes from the theatrical version on the home video releases over the years please? I don't think i'm aware of them all tbh.

IMDB says the DE has the color of the Sea shells fixed?

''Ariel's sisters' clamshells from "Daughters of Triton" return to their blue color.''

Off the top of my head...

Limited Edition
The only thing different in this from the original theatrical version is the end credits. They added Jodi's "Part of Your World" (as it was in the theatrical rerelease) over the end instead of just "Under the Sea" and "Main Titles".

Platinum Edition
This version drastically altered the colors. (Example, the sister's clam shells were green instead of blue), They "fixed" an animation error where Grimsby's hand was in front of Carlotta's butt by mistake. This edition also saw the removing of the priest's knees, which have been famously accused of looking like an erection.

Diamond Edition
The DE restored the film back to it's proper colors for the most part (some argue that Ariel's tale is too blue in the shark chase scene, but I don't see it). This version made the change of moving the "Walt Disney Pictures Presents" title to a different spot in the movie. The mistake of Grimsby's hand being in the wrong place that was "fixed" in the Platinum Edition was put back to the way it was before. The priests knees are still removed in this release. During the scene where Ariel and Eric dive off Giant Ursula's head, there is what looks like either film damage or the camera going off the background for a second in the top right corner (This has most likely always been there, but has been cropped out in previous video releases). The two most controversial issues have since been fixed by Disney who are offering an exchange program for unsatisfied customers, being the cross fade into Scuttle's first scene changed to a quick cut, and the big one, two shots being switched in PoYW making Ariel's singing out of sync for a few seconds.

Guys the title credits got changed because of the 3D restoration not because they randomly decided to change it. The 2D blu-ray uses the same 3D restoration and since Silver Screen partners is not apart of the 3D version. They removed "Silver Screen Partners" in the IMAX/3D version of Beauty and the Beast. Chances are it'll be back in the next release.

That makes sense for the "Silver Screen Partners II", but that bit came after "The Little Mermaid" title, so it should have had no effect or reasoning for changing the "Walt Disney Pictures Presents" to an earlier spot. I think that move WAS a random decision that they didn't put much thought into (As it goes against Clements and Musker's claim in the audio commentary that each title card was specifically placed with the music) while they were laying everything back together for the 3D version.
